Sauk Valley Community College to host blood drive June 30
The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Dillon Mall on the college's Dixon campus at 173 state Route 2.
The drive, sponsored by the SVCC Student Activities and Student Government Association, invites students, faculty, staff and the community to help save lives through blood donation.
Donors are encouraged to bring a photo ID, eat a healthy meal and drink plenty of water before donating. The donation process typically takes about an hour, and all donors will receive a $15 e-gift card.
Although walk-ins are welcome, organizers recommend scheduling an appointment in advance as spots tend to fill quickly. Appointments can be made by visiting redcrossblood.org or by calling 815-835-6432.
To streamline the process, participants can save time by using RapidPass, which allows donors to complete pre-donation reading and health history questions online. For more information, visit redcrossblood.org/RapidPass.

Multiple residents, pets displaced after apartment fire in Long Beach engulfs units
Multiple residents and their pets are displaced after an apartment fire in Long Beach engulfed units on Tuesday morning. Crews from the Long Beach Fire Department received several calls around 12:51 a.m. about a fire at an apartment complex. When firefighters arrived, they found smoke coming from a balcony. As they entered the 4-story complex, they found the second, third, and fourth floors on fire. Multiple animals were removed and rescued from apartment units, including cats, dogs and birds. The fire department said one unit that was impacted had over a dozen pets inside. After the fire was fully extinguished around 1:10 a.m., firefighters began surveying the area they found two cats and a dog had died. There are no reports of any other injuries. Three units were displaced from the fire and the American Red Cross will be assisting those residents with housing resources. It is unclear how the fire started, but authorities will continue to investigate the incident.

Two firefighters hospitalized, row home fire rekindles early on Sunday morning
A fire that broke out on Saturday evening caused two firefighters to be hospitalized. According to the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire, just after 7 p.m., they were called to the 5100 block of Chaplin Way for a fire at a row home. The fire began in one of the homes but spread to three adjacent homes in the process. During the fight, one firefighter had to be taken to the hospital for treatment of second-degree burns to his wrists. Another firefighter has to be taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and shortness of breath. Despite being able to knock down the flames on Saturday night, it did rekindle early on Sunday morning. The Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire said as of Saturday night, it's unknown how many residents have been displaced as a result, but that the American Red Cross is assisting them. The exact cause of the fire is under investigation by the fire investigation unit.

At least 5 displaced after vacant building fire damages neighboring structure, Dallas Fire-Rescue says
At least five people are displaced after a fire at a vacant two-story building damaged a neighboring structure, Dallas Fire-Rescue said Saturday morning. DFR said just after 6 a.m., crews were called to a building fire at the intersection of N. Marsalis Avenue and Comal Street. DFW said a second alarm was immediately requested, followed by a third alarm, leading to between 65 to 70 firefighters being called to the scene. Crews worked for over two hours before extinguishing the blaze, during which a neighboring residential building received exposure damage, officials said. Though no injuries were reported, DFR said at least five residents from the neighboring residence required assistance from the American Red Cross. The cause of the fire is under investigation, officials said.
