Japan Speaker-led delegation in Assam on 3-day visit, CM says move will boost collaboration
Guwahati, A Japanese delegation, led by its House of Representatives Speaker Nukaga Fukushiro, arrived here on Saturday on a three-day visit to Assam.
Welcoming the delegation, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the visit will encourage Japanese companies to look at Assam and other North Eastern states for enhanced collaboration.
The team, which reached Guwahati in the evening, was received by Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary at the airport.
"H.E. Nukaga Fukushiro, Hon'ble Speaker of the House of Representatives of Japan, arrived in Assam today leading a high-level delegation for a three-day visit," the Chief Minister's Office said in a post on X.
Daimary was accompanied by Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Nandita Gorlosa and senior officials, the CMO added.
Sarma, after receiving the delegation at his office, said, "I consider it my honour to welcome the Hon'ble Speaker and his delegation to our beautiful state. This visit is a testament to deepening ties between Assam and Japan."
He maintained that the visit will encourage Japanese companies to look at Assam and other NE states for collaboration.
The visit will give a new momentum to Assam's strategic partnership with Japan through collaborative initiatives in the backdrop of Advantage Assam 2.0, Sarma added, apprising Fukushiro of the business ecosystem in the state.
Referring to his visit to Japan in February and his meeting with the Speaker regarding employment opportunities for the state's youth in Japan, Sarma conveyed Assam's readiness of starting a Japanese Language and Testing Centre at ASEAN One Technical Centre at Amingaon in Kamrup district.
Chief Secretary Ravi Kota gave a detailed presentation showcasing the business landscape of Assam and the potential areas for collaboration.
He highlighted on a gamut of opportunities ranging from industries, tourism, skill, employment, health and family welfare, etc.
The Japanese delegation attended a cultural programme hosted in their honour, which was attended by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya among others.
The 45-member delegation is scheduled to visit the Indian Institute of Technology , Guwahati, and the Tata Semiconductor and Testing Facility at Jagiroad on Sunday, an official said.
They will also visit projects being implemented here with Japanese aid before leaving on Monday, the official added.
The chief minister had visited Japan in January and invited Fukushiro to Assam during his meeting with him.

Ghosh said China's upstream interventions will have "negligible or almost no effect" on Brahmaputra's overall flow. Brahmaputra originates at Angsi Glacier in Tibet, flows 1,625km as Yarlung Tsangpo before entering India where it runs 918km - as Siang, Dihang, then Brahmaputra - and finishes its 2,880km journey with a 337km stretch in Bangladesh, before meeting Ganga. Though China has announced plans to build a massive hydropower dam on Yarlung Tsangpo, Indian experts said Brahmaputra's scale and Indian monsoon strength make fears of water cuts largely unfounded. IDSA senior fellow Uttam Sinha, citing peer-reviewed data, said even during lean periods Yarlung Tsangpo's annual outflow from China is far lower than Brahmaputra's total discharge in India.

Nidec launches Rs 600cr manufacturing plant in Dharwad
Dharwad: Nidec, a global leader in data centre equipment manufacturing, has set up a new plant with an investment of Rs 600 crore at the Beluru Industrial Area in Dharwad. The facility was officially launched by minister for large and medium industries, MB Patil. Speaking at the event, Patil said the new plant, which creates 800 direct jobs, will cater to the growing demand across sectors such as electric vehicles, data centres, renewable energy, battery storage, and general industries. "This unit will bolster local manufacturing, enhance R&D capabilities, and improve supply chain reliability," he said. The plant will manufacture heavy-duty machines of 2MW, 3MW, and 4MW capacity, essential for data centres, using advanced technology from Japan and France. These machines will be exported to markets in the US, the UAE, and Europe, alongside serving the domestic market. "While the facility has initially generated 800 direct jobs, the number is expected to rise to around 3,000 once the plant becomes fully operational," Patil informed. He also mentioned that 20 acres of land has been allocated for the company's battery solutions unit. In addition to heavy machinery, the plant will also produce power backup generators, wind generators, alternators for data centre, EV motors for three wheelers, four wheelers, trucks, elevator motors, and electronic drives-MV and LV. "For Nidec's project, we ensured timely facilitation by allotting the required land within just two years," he added. Addressing concerns about water usage, the minister clarified, "The Krishna River water tribunal has allocated 4 tmc of water for industrial purposes, of which, we are currently using only 0.5 tmc. We are not diverting water meant for agriculture. Moreover, the industries are provided only downstream water from the Hidkal Dam." He further emphasised the importance of balancing industrial development with agricultural interests. "While acquiring land for industrial purposes, fair compensation must be ensured for farmers. Yes Bank set to raise up to Rs 16,000 crore
MUMBAI: Yes Bank's board approved several proposals, including a plan to raise Rs 7,500 crore via equity and Rs 8,500 crore via debt, following Japan's Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp's planned entry as a strategic investor. The decisions, taken on June 3, mark a shift in the bank's capital structure and governance framework. The proposals are subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals.
