Schumacher looks back on his whirlwind Wanderers introduction at Reading

Yahoo12 hours ago
THE last time Steven Schumacher prepared a side to face Reading, he wasn't entirely sure of the name of every player sat in his dressing room.
February 1, 2025, and the newly appointed Bolton boss travelled down to the Select Car Leasing Stadium having introduced himself on the training ground only the previous morning.
That he took charge of the game at all was a surprise to some, especially as the interim management group of Julian Darby, Andy Taylor and Andrew Tutte had managed to win two from two in their short spells to leave him in the best possible position.
Schumacher watched a situation unfold that would prove frustratingly familiar by the end of the season – one in which Wanderers created chances but could not convert them, only to be caught by a sucker punch at the end of the game via Harvey Knibbs' penalty, given for a bizarre handball from debutant Kion Etete.
Asked if he had considered 'watching from the stands' on that day, Schumacher admits his excitement at getting back into football with the Whites had taken over his thinking at the time.
'I'd been out of the game for three or four months and I was desperate to get back involved,' he told The Bolton News. 'I don't know how long the interview process went on for in the end but it seemed to be a long time and all that week I was just thinking about if I was given the opportunity to be the manager what team would we pick, so I thought about it a lot when I got in.
'Julian, Andrew Taylor and Tutty had done such a good job in the previous two games and I said: 'Look, I'm going to need your advice on what you think.'
'I'm pretty sure they had a huge part in picking the team and the preparation went smoothly as what it would normally do.
'I actually thought we played well on the day, had some really big chances to score.
'It was a story of how the rest of the season went, wasn't it? I Remember Aaron Collins had a big chance and then another one later on. From nothing from a penalty was given in the last few minutes.
'I just didn't want to wait any longer, just get in the mix straight away and glad that I did.'

Why Reading must 'stay together' as they aim to get off the mark at Bolton
Thankfully, preparations will be much more exhaustive this time around and after getting off to such a positive start at home in the league to Plymouth, Schumacher is keen to keep the run going over the next few days as Reading and Lincoln City come to town.
'It's important that you try and make the most of your home advantage and try and make the Toughsheet Stadium a tough place for people to come and play,' he said.
'So we want to continue what we did against Plymouth in the league, we were really good, we managed to get a result in the game against Sheffield Wednesday (in the Carabao Cup), although we lost in our penalties, we came from behind three times and used our home advantage to not fall apart there when we had 10 men.
'So that's what we'll be trying to do at the weekend, just try and get on the front foot, be positive and get a result that we need.'

Shearer accuses Isak of pouring 'flames on fire' of Newcastle row

Newcastle great Alan Shearer has accused wantaway striker Alexander Isak of pouring "flames on the fire" of his row with the Magpies by accusing the club of breaking promises. The Sweden international, who was the second-highest goalscorer in the Premier League last season, has not featured for Newcastle in pre-season or their opening game of the campaign, a goalless draw away at Aston Villa last Saturday. Liverpool have reportedly had a £110 million bid ($149 million) rejected for the 25-year-old, with Newcastle holding out for a British transfer record fee of up to £150 million. Isak released a statement on Tuesday after deciding not to appear at the Professional Footballers' Association awards event despite being selected in the Premier League 2024/25 team of the year. "The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time," said Isak, with the 25-year-old adding: "When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue." But former Newcastle captain and manager Shearer, speaking to Betfair, labelled the current situation an "absolute mess" as he accused Isak's agent, Vlado Lemic, of failing his client. "If I was him, I'd get his agent in a room and sack him on the spot immediately, because he is meant to be giving him the advice to sign that six-year deal and there's no get out clause," Shearer said. "I mean, it's ridiculous. And to take anyone's word in football... it's nonsensical to say that someone said, 'Oh, I'll be able to get out at the end of the season'. Really? I mean, come on." - 'Wrong way' - The ex-England striker added: "I've always said there are two sides to every story, but my feelings are exactly the same: he's gone about it in the wrong way. "I just think even releasing this statement last night has thrown flames onto the fire, which he didn't need to do... It doesn't benefit anyone." According to reports, Isak had been promised an improved contract only for Newcastle to hold off due to pressures of meeting financial sustainability rules. Newcastle issued a statement late Tuesday saying while they were saddened by Isak's comments, they could yet welcome him back into the squad. "No commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer," said the statement. "We want to keep our best players... Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates." Isak has scored 62 goals in 109 appearances since joining from Real Sociedad in 2022, including the winner against Liverpool in the League Cup final earlier this year that ended Newcastle's 70-year wait to win a domestic trophy. Liverpool have already spent around £300 million overhauling a squad that romped to the Premier League title last season. But they have also recouped over £200 million in sales and are still in the market for attacking options after the departures of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez and tragic death of Diogo Jota. Any deal is unlikely to be done before the two clubs face off in their next Premier League game on Monday at St James' Park. jdg/bsp/mw

Titans cornerback L'Jarius Sneed passes physical and is removed from PUP list

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee cornerback L'Jarius Sneed passed his physical, and the Tennessee Titans removed him from the physically unable to perform list Wednesday in time to start practicing. The two-time Super Bowl champion was part of the Titans' big offseason spending spree in March 2024, with Tennessee trading for the cornerback. Sneed played in just five games and wound up on injured reserve with a quadriceps injury. Sneed said during an offseason camp that he was as healthy as he's been. But the Titans put him on the physically unable to perform list to start training camp, with team officials saying Sneed had a cleanup of a knee in May. The Titans open the season Sept. 7 at Denver. Defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson said Sneed will be day to day in his return, with the five-year veteran being eased back into practice. 'It's good to get him back out there, and he's been chomping at the bit," Wilson said before practice. "He's been doing everything in his power in the training room to get to this point,' Wilson said. 'So I'm just excited for the young man, not just the football player but him because I know the work that he's put in.' Sneed has 10 career interceptions, though he's still looking for his first with Tennessee. The Titans are counting on Sneed to start in a secondary featuring second-year cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr. and Roger McCreary. Titans starting center Lloyd Cushenberry III passed his physical and returned from the physically unable to perform list on Aug. 11. ___ AP NFL:

Titans L'Jarius Sneed activated from PUP

In a move that I doubted would ever happen, Tennessee Titans CB L'Jarius Sneed has passed his physical and been activated from the PUP list. Sneed is supposed to participate in practice in a limited capacity going forward. There is no shot he will play in the preseason finale, but this move gives him a shot to be ready to play week one against the Denver Broncos. The Titans desperately need him back on the field because they are extremely thin at the corner position. Sneed, whom the Titans acquired for a third round pick before the 2024 season, played in just five games last season. He initially went on the IR with a quad injury, but it was revealed right before training camp that he had a procedure on his knee this offseason. That was the reason he started training camp on the PUP list. When healthy, Sneed has been one of the best corners in the league. That's why the Titans gave him a 4-year deal with $51.5 million in guaranteed money after the trade. Hopefully, he can regain that form this year.
