Aptiv opens new Chennai technical centre for AI, ML and safety systems
Spanning more than 34,000 square feet, the new facility will support up to 500 engineers by 2026 and features advanced labs and test infrastructure to accelerate innovation in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and safety-critical systems.
The centre was officially inaugurated by senior leaders from Aptiv and Mahindra, including Javed Khan, Executive Vice-President and President of Software, Advanced Safety and User Experience (AS&UX) at Aptiv, and R Velusamy, President, Automotive Business (Designate), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd; Managing Director, Mahindra Electric Automobile Ltd; and Member of the Group Executive Board, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.
'We are proud to expand our presence in India with the launch of our new technical centre in Chennai,' said Javed Khan. 'This centre will strengthen our ability to localise AI/ML-powered ADAS and advanced interior sensing technologies for the Indian market, reflecting our confidence in India's engineering talent and bringing us closer to our customers—so together, we can build a safer, smarter future here in India.'
This is Aptiv's fourth technical centre in India, reinforcing the company's engineering presence to address the evolving needs of local OEMs. The centre will spearhead the development of next-generation ADAS perception tools, in-cabin sensing technologies, and software-defined infotainment platforms. It will also contribute to Aptiv's cloud-native architecture, while leveraging integrated capabilities across hardware, software, and edge technologies from Wind River. By combining global scale with local relevance, the centre is uniquely positioned to deliver impactful, customer-focused solutions for this fast-growing market.
Aptiv continues to invest in its AS&UX operations in India to accelerate the development, localisation, and production of advanced technology solutions tailored for local automakers. At present, Aptiv employs more than 13,000 people across the country, operating eight manufacturing plants, four technical centres, and a tooling centre—all playing a vital role in advancing the company's global mission to enable intelligent, software-defined systems across industries.

Govt should give power subsidy only to Vidarbha, Marathwada: FIA
Nagpur: The Federations of Industries Associations (FIA), an umbrella organization of industrial bodies across Vidarbha, has demanded that state govt should withdraw the power subsidy scheme for rest of Maharashtra, and once again extend the benefit exclusively to industrial units in Vidarbha and Marathwada. This will restore the scheme to its original form. The scheme was introduced in 2016 when it was available exclusively for industries in the two regions. Later, it was discontinued for two years during the MVA regime, and then restarted in 2022, with all the D-Plus talukas in the state covered, said FIA's past president Kiran Paturkar. FIA has demanded that this has thinly spread the subsidy amount. As against Rs1,100 crore received by Vidarbha earlier, now only Rs500 crore is paid, claims the association. The association has demanded that instead of D-Plus talukas across the state, the power subsidy should be extended to all talukas irrespective of the classification in Vidarbha and Marathwada. The talukas are classified from A to D on the basis of development. The whole idea of providing the subsidy was to boost industries in backward regions like Vidarbha and Marathwada. If the incentive is also available in richer regions like West Maharashtra why would an industrial unit be attracted to a region like Vidarbha, said Paresh Raja, president of FIA. The FIA will be taking up the issue with the state govt soon, he said. Raja said the state's ease of doing business policy at present focuses mainly on the large industries. There need to be steps for MSMEs too. Paturkar said even the land allotment mechanism for small and mid-sized industries needs changes, as applicants often face hassles in the online portal. BOX State forms panel on tariffs The state govt has formed a committee to review the impact of US tariff hike and suggest measure to increase exports. It would specially study the impact on state's economy and come up with mid and long term solutions. The committee would also take up a review of aspects like de-criminalisation, self-certification of low risk non-hazardous, non-polluting industries, and ease of doing business. A government resolution (GR) issued in this regard says that the tariff hike would hamper the competitiveness of the Indian industry. As much as 18% of India's exports are to the US, which comes to 2.2% of the GDP. The 14-member committee will work on measures like exploring new markets, region-specific incentives and come up with a flexible approach against the protectionist stance of the US govt, says the GR. The committee will headed by Apurva Chandra, former IAS officer and principal advisor to ministry of defence. The industries will be represented by Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), CII, FICCI, FIEO as well as other bodies like Dalit Indian Chamber of Commerce (DICC), and Engineering Export Promotion Council of India (EEPC). Differences must not become disputes: S Jaishankar to China's Wang
India and China on Monday discussed economic and trade issues, including resumption of border trade and direct flights, with New Delhi again flagging its concerns over Beijing's curbs on the export of rare earth minerals. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi landed in New Delhi on Monday evening for a two-day visit. He held talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. In his opening remarks during the discussion, Jaishankar said that 'the basis for any positive momentum' in India-China ties 'is the ability to jointly maintain peace and tranquillity in the border areas'. It is also essential that the de-escalation process move forward, he said. 'Having seen a difficult period in our relationship,' Jaishankar told Wang, 'our two nations now seek to move ahead'. This requires a candid and constructive approach from both sides, he said. Jaishankar said the two countries must be guided in this endeavour by the three mutual, 'mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest.' 'Differences must not become disputes, nor competition conflict,' he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping's meeting on October 23, 2024, in the Russian city of Kazan, on the sidelines of the Brics Summit, paved the way for de-escalation in the border areas between the two countries after the friction in ties since the Galwan Valley clashes in June 2020. Jaishankar and Wang's discussion will also lay the groundwork for the Indian PM's visit to the northern Chinese city of Tianjin to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit on August 31 and September 1, where he is slated to meet the Chinese President on the sidelines of the summit. Wang and India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval will discuss the boundary issues under the auspices of the 24th round of the Special Representatives mechanism on Tuesday. Wang will also call on Prime Minister Modi on Tuesday evening. At the meeting of the two delegations on Monday, Jaishankar said they will also discuss river data sharing, people-to-people contacts, among other issues. 'I would like to follow up on some particular concerns that I had brought up with you when I visited China in July,' Jaishankar told Wang, alluding to India's request that China lifts restrictions on its export of rare earth minerals. The two sides discussed the international situation. 'We seek a fair, balanced and multi-polar world order, including a multi-polar Asia. Reformed multilateralism is also the call of the day,' Jaishankar said. 'In the current environment, there is clearly the imperative of maintaining and enhancing stability in the global economy as well,' he said. The fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is another major priority, the EAM said. Wang's visit is the first by a Chinese minister since Modi and Xi's Kazan meeting in October, Jaishankar noted. 'Overall, it is our expectation that our discussions would contribute to building a stable, cooperative and forward-looking relationship between India and China, one that serves both our interests and addresses our concerns,' he said, wishing China a successful SCO Summit that it is hosting. In Beijing, China on Monday said Foreign Minister Wang's visit to India was aimed at working with New Delhi to deliver on important understandings reached between the leaders of the two sides and decisions taken during the previous round of border talks. Wang is slated to visit Pakistan later this week.
