Forecaster who quit role on-air now working on two books - including one with 'personal' focus

FORMER MET ÉIREANN forecaster Joanna Donnelly says she intends to devote more time to writing, after she quit her role at the weather service in dramatic fashion by announcing her departure live on TV back in April. The meteorologist broke her silence on the reasons for her decision yesterday, writing a column for the Sunday Independent in which she detailed her disputes with Met Éireann management, including a row about rosters and a disagreement over outside engagements. Donnelly was one of the highest-profile forecasters during her time at RTÉ, presenting regular TV bulletins and penning several books about the weather, including a bestselling reference book for children. At the start if the year she joined the line-up of RTÉ's Dancing with the Stars, becoming the third celebrity to be eliminated in a February episode of the show. Speaking to The Journal today Donnelly said she was weighing up a number of options for the future and confirmed she's writing two more books – one of which will be of a more personal nature. As of yet, there are no plans for a publication date. 'When there's a book in there, it needs to come out,' Donnelly said. 'So writing is, is in itself, a worthy thing to do, whether it becomes a published book or not, that's that's a different thing.' Donnelly detailed in her column yesterday how she had received her first warning from management in 2023 over a social media post about a second-hand hairdryer that she loved. Speaking today she said she was 'absolutely heartbroken' to be disciplined over something 'so silly'. This was during a time of heightened focus on social media posts by staff and anyone associated with RTÉ, coming in the wake of the Ryan Tubridy controversy and revelations about the broadcaster's barter account. Advertisement Other on-air hosts also found themselves in hot water with management around that time – notably Doireann Garrihy, who had posted a sponsored ad with Flahavan's porridge , taken in an RTÉ studio, on her Instagram in 2022. Separately, Lottie Ryan was ordered to remove a social media ad for a car company , that was filmed on RTÉ's campus without permission. 'It was around the time RTÉ were dealing with the Ryan Tubridy fallout and there was a close inspection of all our social media … it went through my social media historic posts,' Donnelly said. Donnelly says was asked to delete anything that might be construed as a sponsorship, which she says she did. When she made the later post about the hairdryer she said she didn't think anything of it as she had brought it secondhand – but she said the issue led to her receiving a warning. Even now, without the restrictions of RTÉ and Met Éireann, Donnelly says she has no plans to become an influencer. She said she was primarily focused on looking after herself and her family, and focusing on her writing. RTÉ declined to comment on Donnelly's departure. The national broadcaster uses a tender process to choose its forecaster. Met Éireann, having won the tender, provides the service, but RTÉ has no involvement in the forecaster's operations. Met Éireann has not yet responded to queries from The Journal but in a statement to the Independent the forecaster said: 'Met Éireann, the Irish National Meteorological Service, is a line division of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. 'As an employer, the department has a duty to its employees not to disclose any information of a personal nature and accordingly, the department does not comment on any matters related to individual members of staff. 'As a Division of a Civil Service Department, all employees of Met Éireann are civil servants. 'Civil servants are obliged to work within certain standards, including under the Civil Service Code of Standards and Behaviour. The department, and Met Éireann also have a policy on media and social media. 'Civil servants have recourse to the Civil Service Grievance Procedure for complaints such as those mentioned.' The Irish version of the smash show will hit screens here on August 31. However, RTE have not disclosed whether The Traitors Ireland will air at 6:30pm - like Dancing With The Stars - or at the later time of 9:25pm after the news. An RTE source told The Irish Sun: 'That scheduling information will be available next week.' Advertisement Excitement increased today as the national broadcaster also released a new promo for the hit show, featuring host Siobhan. The nail-biting reality competition sees a group of strangers arrive at Slane Castle to play the ultimate game of deception, betrayal and trust, all in the hope of winning up to €50,000. But, hidden amongst them are the Traitors, who will attempt to secretly murder a player every night, without getting caught. It's up to the others, the Faithfuls, to try to detect who the Traitors are, and banish them from the game, before they become their next victim. An RTE release added: 'Expect conniving glances over banquet breakfasts, whispers in corridors and enough drama to make even the most loyal viewer question their instincts. As tension rises and alliances crumble, viewers will be left asking: who's lying, who's loyal and who's next?' Advertisement Filming of the reality show took place at Slane Castle earlier this year with the identity of the winner now a closely guarded secret. Owner of Slane Castle, Alex Conyngham - son of the late Henry Mount Charles - has revealed how he and his family lived on the top floor of the castle while below them contestants were being murdered in the nail-biting psychological reality competition. The Traitors shock as surprise winners walk away with £90k cash prize in VERY tense scenes He told us: 'Living on top of a film set is an unusual one, but I grew up with a bit of that because the movie The Great Train Robbery was filmed here with Sean Connery. "But this was a little bit different and more intense but I have to say it that (producer) Darren (Smith) and the whole crew were very respectful to us.' Advertisement OFFER CONSIDERATION Alex revealed he had to give it some serious consideration when Irish TV producers approached him to open up his ancestral home to all the mind games, missions, and unexpected twists for which the hit show is famous. He said: 'I had to look at it (offer) closely as you do with any heritage asset. I was concerned with the impact on the building but once we understood how it would work, we said yes. "The great thing with this castle is we have such an array of different rooms and scenery and I suppose that's what got everyone excited.' 'HE LOVED IT' The son of rock 'n' roll aristocrat Henry Mount Charles, said his dad, who died in June after filming wrapped, was "amused" by goings on in the TV show which sees constant murders, and betrayals. Advertisement Alex said: 'It would take a lot to surprise my dad. He loved the whole thing.' RTE announced that Republic of Telly host Kevin McGahern will host a spin-off show, The Traitors Ireland Uncloaked, in which celebrity guests and players from the game will discuss the latest betrayals, mind games and manipulations. Filmed in RTE Limerick, each episode will feature an exclusive interview with the banished or murdered player. With bonus unseen footage, some will learn the identity of the Traitors for the very first time. 3 The show will air on RTE One later this month Credit: RTE

Ambient Orbit: exploring ambient sound in Irish sacred spaces

Peter Curtin, the producer of Ambient Orbit, gives an overview and insight into their upcoming events in Kilkenny, Cork, and Limerick. Ambient Orbit began broadcasting on RTÉ lyric fm in the winter of 2022. Around this time, we were beginning to hear the fruits of music that had been recorded in new and curious ways during the second wave of the pandemic. Artists looking to overcome the logistical challenges of recording in an era of restrictions had innovatively set-up recording spaces outdoors. Suddenly, environmental ambience was an intrinsic part of jazz and electronic music with cicadas transporting us to a back garden in Chicago or resonant bird song bringing us to a leafy park in Berlin. Music welcomed the sound of the natural world and there was a perfect synchronicity to it. My colleague Áine Gallagher and I recognised the potential for occupying this space on RTÉ lyric where field recordings from the Irish landscape could be captured and mixed with ambient music; creating an immersive and meditative experience that would allow listeners to reset and escape the noise of everyday life. Since the first episode on October 10th 2022, the non-presenter led programme - now entering its seventh series this October - has collaborated with field recordists, sound designers and ornithologists such as Seán Ronayne, Tadhg O'Sullivan, Fintan O'Brien and Aoife O'Neill in addition to broadcasting field recordings submitted by listeners. Towards the end of the second series, we explored the idea of bringing the programme to a live setting. It seemed fitting that ancient Irish neolithic sites of mythical and sacred significance would be the setting, and solstice celebrations which mark the Gaelic calendar, would be the occasion. Through sound and music, we would attempt to channel how our ancestors would have celebrated the solstice in ancient times. For the summer solstice in June 2023, we invited musicians Larissa O'Grady (violin), Ryan Hargadon (saxophone) and Rachael Lavelle (vocal) to Lough Gur, the oldest standing stone circle in Ireland. With two directional mics pointing towards the lake and the surrounding woods, the musicians responded live to the unfolding dawn chorus and the rising sun. We have marked every winter and summer solstice since then; visiting the Céide Fields, the Hill of Uisneach and Loughcrew along the way, soundtracked by the unique surrounding environment and music from Dan Walsh, Méabh McKenna, RÓIS, Neil Ó'Lochlainn, Niamh Dalton, Gareth Quinn Redmond, Elaine Howley, David Kitt, Elaine Malone and Clara Webster. The show has also been performed live at Another Love Story, Gleo Festival in Limerick, Open Ear on Sherkin Island and Culture Night 2024 in collaboration with the Douglas Hyde Gallery from Trinity College. On 14th August, Ambient Orbit partners with Kilkenny Arts Festival to broadcast from one of the chambers of Dunmore Cave, which were formed over millions of years. Kate Ellis, Nick Roth, Adam Buttimer and RÓIS will join us and we're excited to hear their experimental sounds reverberate around the historical chambers of the cave. Before returning for a new season on RTÉ lyric fm in October, we will be heading to Cork City on September 10th to broadcast from St Anne's Church, with the Shandon Bells providing the backdrop to our programme in collaboration with Sounds from a Safe Harbour. In this hectic contemporary world of digital distraction, we strive to create a peaceful programme of beautiful sounds and music to help the listener to relax, rewind and focus.
