Express Tribune6 days ago
Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle has achieved a record-breaking debut at the Japanese box office, setting the highest opening weekend earnings in the country's history.
According to Crunchyroll, the film earned ¥7.31 billion (approximately USD 49.55 million) within four days of release, with over 5.16 million tickets sold. Its three-day opening total reached ¥5.52 billion (USD 37.42 million).
The film, which begins the climactic arc of the Demon Slayer series, follows the Hashira Training arc and is the first in a trilogy set to conclude the main story.
Infinity Castle has received a 9.3/10 rating on IMDb, with fans praising its animation quality, emotional depth, and large-scale production. Premium formats contributed to the film's total, with Deadline reporting $3.5 million from IMAX screenings.
While the film has surpassed the opening weekend record previously held by Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, it has not yet approached Mugen Train's lifetime box office figure. Demon Slayer: Mugen Train remains the highest-grossing anime film in Japan, with a total of ¥40.4 billion (around USD 507 million) worldwide.
Infinity Castle will continue its rollout internationally, premiering in Southeast Asia on August 12, followed by Latin America, Australia, and the Middle East on September 11, and in the US, UK, Canada, and India on September 12. European markets will follow, with France on September 17 and Germany on September 18.

Zayn Malik attends BLACKPINK's NYC Deadline concert with daughter Khai in rare public appearance

Zayn Malik made a rare public appearance with his daughter Khai at BLACKPINK's Deadline concert in New York City, drawing attention from fans and followers online. The singer shared a touching photo to his Instagram Stories on July 28, showing him holding four-year-old Khai while staying safely distant from the crowd. '@BLACKPINKOFFICIAL THANK YOU ME & KHAI LOVED IT,' Zayn wrote alongside the image. The pair attended the highly anticipated show as part of BLACKPINK's global Deadline tour, which began in July and continues through December. Zayn kept his look understated in what some fans believe is a BLACKPINK merchandise hoodie, while Khai wore a light pink outfit and sported her signature long braid. The appearance marked the first time the former One Direction member had taken his daughter to a concert, making the moment especially significant for fans. Zayn welcomed Khai on September 19, 2020, with ex-girlfriend and supermodel Gigi Hadid. Though the couple parted ways following reported family tensions, Zayn has remained a committed father and rarely shares personal moments involving his daughter. The singer's post quickly went viral, with fans praising his private yet devoted parenting style. This glimpse into their bond adds to growing excitement around Zayn's return to music, with his new single Fuchsia Sea expected to release later this year.

Rachel Zegler leaves Evita stage mid-show after falling ill

Rachel Zegler, currently starring in Evita at London's West End Palladium, abruptly exited Thursday evening's performance due to illness, according to People. The 24-year-old actress had performed the matinee earlier that day but was unable to continue the night show. During intermission, the production announced Zegler's departure, and understudy Bella Brown took over the lead role of Eva Perón for the second act. Brown opened the act with the show's most iconic number, 'Don't Cry for Me Argentina,' and delivered a performance that earned her a standing ovation lasting nearly five minutes. She and the cast returned for 10 curtain calls. Sharing her thoughts on Instagram, Brown praised understudies and stand-ins, saying, 'They are pillars of a show!' She later called the experience 'a proud day to be at Evita.' -Instagram. Zegler's absence comes amid a headline-making run of the Jamie Lloyd-directed production, which opened in June and continues through September 6. While many have praised Zegler's West End debut, the staging choice for her performance of 'Don't Cry for Me Argentina' — sung from a balcony outside the theatre while audiences inside watch via livestream — sparked controversy. Some ticketholders expressed frustration on social media, questioning the value of the experience. Others defended the choice, viewing it as a poignant symbol of accessibility for those unable to afford theatre admission. The role is a personal milestone for Zegler, who previously shared that Evita had deep meaning to her and her father. 'The stage has always felt like home to me,' she told Deadline in March. Zegler's off-stage life has also drawn attention recently. She was seen with dancer Nathan Louis-Fernand at a Sabrina Carpenter concert in July, following reports of her split from actor Josh Andrés Rivera. Her latest role follows a tumultuous year, including public backlash over her comments during Disney's Snow White press tour and the film's poor box office performance.

Fans dive into San Diego Comic-Con despite drop in celebrity panels

SAN DIEGO: This year's Comic-Con may not be featuring as much star power as usual, but attendees dressed up for opening day on Thursday were just as pumped as ever to be there. Richard Cao, 38, from San Diego, said he has been preparing for a long time, getting into shape so he can go as bare-chested Inosuke Hashibira, a character from the anime series 'Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba'. 'I lost about 30 pounds over six months, that's just the physical, I guess, investment I made,' Cao said. This year's festivities at the San Diego Convention Center will not have the usual Hall H major A-list celebrity panels, which typically discuss popular movie franchises from the likes of Marvel and DC Studios. But highlights will include 'Star Wars' creator George Lucas making his San Diego Comic-Con debut and Disney's 'Tron: Ares' and 'Predator: Badlands' panels. There will also be a panel for the upcoming film 'Project Hail Mary' starring Ryan Gosling, and the world premiere of the 'King of the Hill' revival and a panel with show co-creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels. It is also the first year to include a two-day music festival called Crunchyroll Anime FanFest, hosted by Crunchyroll, an American subscription-based anime streaming service owned by Sony Group Corporation. US clears way for $8 billion Paramount-Skydance merger The festival will feature anime music from popular titles, including 'The One Piece 25th Anniversary Symphony Voyage,' based on the popular anime series. Crunchyroll has over 13 million subscribers globally. Although hotel and overall travel prices continue to rise for those out of town, fans say they weren't deterred. 'It's totally worth it,' said Sophia Blanco, 39, from New York City who paid 'a couple of thousands' for her entire trip. 'You go on vacation, you do anything, you're spending money. So, just spend money on what you enjoy, no matter what you do,' she added.
