2 dead, nearly 500 arrested as Paris celebrates Champions League victory
Massive street celebrations erupted in the French capital after the city's premier soccer team won its first European-wide Champions League title Saturday night, but violence marred the festivities, with police reporting hundreds of arrests and injuries.
Two deaths were reported in France. In Paris, a man in his 20s died after he was hit by a car, in an incident that is being investigated as possibly related to the match celebrations. And in southwest France, a teenager was stabbed to death, the Associated Press reported. Police reported 491 arrests, other violence and property damage — prompting Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau to say that 'thugs' had descended on the streets of Paris.
