Vanderbilt's Blakes scores 27 points to lead US to AmeriCup gold and berth at World Cup next year
SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Mikayla Blakes scored 27 points and the United States beat Brazil 92-84 to secure a berth in next year's World Cup in Germany.
The U.S. team, made up of college players, trailed 66-65 heading into the fourth quarter. Blakes, who finished a stellar freshman season at Vanderbilt, hit a 3-pointer early in the period to give the Americans a 70-69 advantage and sparked a 9-0 run.
South Carolina's Joyce Edwards capped the spurt with a layup that made it 76-69 with 6:37 left. Bella Nascimento hit two free throws to snap the drought and get the South American country within five.
The Americans answered every run Brazil made down the stretch and when Damiris Dantas hit a 3-pointer with 40 seconds left to make it 89-84, Hannah Hidalgo, who finished with 16 points, hit three of four free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Dantas, who plays for the Indiana Fever, scored 35 points to lead Brazil. Nascimento had 24 points and Kamilla Cardoso added 19. The rest of the Brazilian team scored six points.
The U.S. trailed 47-45 at the half despite Blakes scoring 17 points in the opening two quarters.
The Americans won the AmeriCup in 2019 and 2021, but lost to Brazil in the gold medal game in 2023.
The start of the game was delayed as the bronze medal game between Canada and Argentina went to double overtime. The Canadians won 76-75 on a layup by Michigan star Syla Swords with 1.4 seconds left.

Auburn football has posted several impressive seasons in its history; however, it has claimed just two national championships. Those records were rewritten on Tuesday as Auburn athletics and Athletics Director John Cohen have officially decided to claim seven additional national championships and three more conference championships, bringing its overall total to nine and 15, respectively. In addition to its 1957 and 2010 national championships, Auburn will now officially claim championships from 1910, 1913, 1914, 1958, 1983, 1993, and 2004. Auburn Undercover, which was one of several outlets to break the news, shared a statement from Cohen regarding the decision to rewrite the history books and recognize more titles. "For too long, Auburn has chosen a humble approach to our program's storied history – choosing to recognize only Associated Press national championships. Starting this fall, we have made the decision to honor the accomplishments of our deserving student-athletes, coaches, and teams from Auburn's proud history. Our visible national championship recognitions now align with the well-established standard used by the NCAA's official record book and our peers across the nation." Here is a deep dive into Auburn's newly claimed national titles, and where the Tigers finished each season in the Associated Press poll. 1910 Auburn, then known as Alabama Polytechnic Institute, finished the 1910 season with a 6-1 overall record and a 5-0 mark in SIAA play, tying Vanderbilt for the conference title. Auburn stumbled on the road at Texas that season, 9-0, but it did not affect the Maxwell Ratings and College Football Rankings from selecting Auburn as national champions. 1913 Auburn dominated the 1913 season by finishing 8-0 and outpacing their opponents, 224-13. Its margin of victory over its foes is what led the Tigers to win the 1913 title, as Billingsley's MOV (margin of victory) listed Auburn as the 1913 national champions. 1914 Auburn also went unbeaten in 1914, not allowing a single point. Their lone blemish on their schedule was a scoreless tie with rival Georgia. James Howell's Power Ratings System recognized the Tigers as national champions this season, giving Auburn credit for its dominating season. 1958 One year after Auburn won its first "official" title, before Tuesday's announcement, Auburn built another unbeaten season, finishing 9-0-1 on the year and winning the national title thanks to a nod from David Montgomery. 1983 The first Auburn national championship of the "Associated Press poll" era took place in 1983 when the Tigers finished No. 3 in the final AP poll of the season behind Nebraska and Miami. Nebraska lost to Miami in the Orange Bowl that season, which was the de facto National Championship game. Despite not playing for the title, Auburn received seven first-place votes, 2.5 more votes than the Cornhuskers. 1993 Auburn's 1993 season was unforgettable, even if only a small chunk of the fan base got to witness the season live. The team was under probation following a pay-for-play scandal, which eliminated Auburn's chances of playing in front of a televised audience and playing in a postseason game. Despite the penalties, Auburn finished the season with an 11-0 record in Terry Bowdon's first season at the helm and was crowned national champions by the National Championship Foundation. Auburn, USC, Oklahoma, and Utah were deserving of a chance to play for a title, but only the Trojans and Sooners earned the right to compete for it. Auburn concluded its SEC Championship-winning season with a 16-13 win over Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl, and four players from that roster went on to become first-round picks in the 2005 NFL draft. USA Hockey Invites 44 NHL Players To Olympic Orientation Camp: Full List
USA Hockey announced 44 players will head to the U.S. men's Olympic orientation camp in Plymouth, Mich. The camp, scheduled for Aug. 26 and 27, is mainly for administrative and team-building purposes and does not feature any formal on-ice activity or public component. All but one of Team USA's players at the 4 Nations Face-Off will attend after finishing second in that tournament. Matthew Tkachuk will not attend, but a player does not have to be at the orientation camp to be on the final Olympic roster, USA Hockey said. Tkachuk was already one of six players named to Team USA, with the others being Jack Eichel, Auston Matthews, Brady Tkachuk, Quinn Hughes and Charlie McAvoy. Only five of the invitees have played in the Olympics before. Patrick Kane was at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics, while Ryan McDonagh was on the 2014 team. Brock Faber, Matthew Knies and Jake Sanderson were college hockey players on Team USA at the 2022 Olympics, which did not feature NHLers. After the Americans won gold at the IIHF men's World Championship for the first time in 92 years, 12 players from that squad are part of the orientation camp as well. Robinhood app now comes with NFL, college football predictions
Robinhood said Tuesday that its U.S.-based customers now can trade on outcomes of the most popular pro and college football games. File (2024) Photo by John Angelillo/UPI | License Photo Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Financial marketplace Robinhood said Tuesday its newly launched predictive market in its app will allow customers to trade on a series of different professional and college football outcomes. Robinhood Derivatives LLC said that, within the Robinhood app via the Prediction Markets Hub, its U.S.-based customers now can trade on outcomes of the most popular pro and college football games, which includes all regular-season matchups and college Power 4 schools and independents, according to company officials. "Adding pro and college football to our prediction markets hub is a no-brainer for us as we aim to make Robinhood a one-stop shop for all your investing and trading needs," JB Mackenzie, Robinhood's VP & GM of Futures and International, said in a statement. Mackenzie described American football as "the most popular sport" in the nation. Robinhood officials said pro and college football prediction markets are "rolling out now" and will be available to eligible customers in the next few days. Robinhood Derivatives is a separate but wholly-owned entity of Robinhood Markets. According to Robinhood, its customers can access contracts in real time and manage risk "by adjusting -- or exiting -- their positions up to and throughout a game before a contract expires." In February, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission ended its investigation into Robinhood Crypto, saying it will not pursue further action with company officials adamant it never should have been opened to start. A report the same month indicated that millions of Americans sought help for gambling addiction in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court's 2018 ruling that allowed states to legalize sports betting.
