WHAT HAPPENED?
Di Canio, a veteran of Serie A who played for teams like Lazio, Juventus, Napoli and AC Milan, is not too sold on the arrivals of legendary midfield duo De Bruyne and Modric. While the former striker admitted that they will bring a lot of quality to Italy, he remains sceptical about whether they can sustain their performance at the highest levels.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Modric left Real Madrid as their most decorated player of all-time, winning 28 titles in 13 years. He also broke the Ballon d'Or duopoly of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo by lifting the award in 2018. On the other hand, De Bruyne etched his name in Manchester City folklore after a glorious decade at the Etihad Stadium. He became one of the greatest midfielders in Premier League history, helping the club win the Champions League in 2023 as well as six league titles.
Modric and De Bruyne, though, are well past their primes. The Croatian will turn 40 next month, while the Belgian turned 34 in June. While players such as Axel Witsel have claimed that the duo will battle it out for the title of the best midfielder in Serie A, Di Canio thinks otherwise.
WHAT PAOLO DI CANIO SAID
Speaking on Corriere della Sera, Di Canio said: "The outlook is twofold: Italy continues to be an elephant's graveyard; before it was [Cristiano] Ronaldo and [Franck] Ribery, now it's De Bruyne and Modric."
He later on clarified that he has no doubts about the qualities of De Bruyne and Modric, but is doubtful about them making an impact on a consistent basis. He said: "They are [top players], of course. Meanwhile, I wonder how many games they can play at a high level, but above all, how much of their quality and technique will be absorbed by their teammates. It's difficult to imitate someone so unique. I mean, they can't do it alone if there's no team capable of circulating well around them. We'll certainly enjoy their quality, but those around them need to quickly learn to understand who they're playing with. Modric is a leader who knows how to communicate with the team: Milan will benefit from that, in a season where they only have the league."
WHAT NEXT FOR MODRIC AND DE BRUYNE?
Modric will be expected to make his competitive debut for the Rossoneri on Sunday, August 17, when Allegri's side take on Bari in the first round of the Coppa Italia. De Bruyne, meanwhile, will play his first official game for Napoli on August 23, in the opening game of Serie A against Sassuolo.

LAS VEGAS — The injuries keep piling up for the San Francisco 49ers, as three players were knocked out of Saturday's preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders, most notably starting right guard Dominick Puni. The 49ers couldn't run the ball (but hey, it's a passing league), and cornerback Deommodore Lenoir will be hearing it from teammates for a while after Raiders running back Ashton Jeanty hit him with a stiff-arm that sent Lenoir straight to the ground. Advertisement Jake Moody went from goat to hero and won the game, 22-19, with a 59-yard field goal with 13 seconds left. He was one of three standouts at Allegiant Stadium, along with three things that will have the coaching staff scratching their heads when they watch the game on film. Moody missed a 53-yard field goal badly in the second quarter after making a 30-yarder in the first quarter. He then barely made a 26-yarder in the third quarter, and maybe Greg Joseph, the vanquished training-camp competitor, was getting a little excited watching on his couch somewhere. But Moody nailed the next three kicks, from 50, 44 and 59 yards out, all in the fourth quarter and the latter two in the final minute. (He said his new two-step approach is good up until 63 yards, and beyond that, he might have had to go back to taking three steps.) His 49ers teammates swarmed him after the game-winning kick, and yeah, it was a rewarding feeling after his struggles last season. He completed 5 of 7 passes for 66 yards on the opening drive for a field goal, relying on his new favorite target with both George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey sitting out. Purdy hit Pearsall on the first two plays of the game, and then the best throw came on a third-and-18 conversion, where Purdy let go of the ball before Pearsall even cut inside on his dig route. The two did have a miscommunication later in the end zone, when Pearsall apparently went the wrong way on a choice route. Purdy's other incompletion was off the hands of Demarcus Robinson. 'The more Brock and Ricky are out there together, the better they get,' coach Kyle Shanahan said. 'Ricky got a late start, but he's put together a couple of good weeks. He's been that way in practice, and it was good to get him out there and see it in a game.' Advertisement Shanahan also had to feel good about Brandon Aiyuk (knee) running routes in pregame warmups and Jauan Jennings (calf) joining the team at the game after missing the last couple of weeks. The rookie missed a couple of tackles for the second consecutive preseason game, but that's just because he is moving so fast. Martin had a sack and also later punched the ball out on a deep throw to a tight end, forcing an incompletion. 'He came around and had some really good hits,' Shanahan said. 'He had that sack on a third down, and I saw a lot of good things. I am excited to watch the film on the plane.' Defensive backs Marques Sigle and Chase Lucas, meanwhile, built off their strong performances in the first preseason game. Sigle showed his open-field tackle prowess, while Lucas came up with a sack for the second consecutive week and an interception. He looked like the receiver on the play. The 49ers have had a lot of injuries during training camp, and they had three more players go down early in Saturday's game. Puni left the game with a knee injury after teammate Matt Hennessy was pancaked back onto his leg on a field goal. Shanahan said Puni has a possible PCL injury and might miss a few weeks, putting his status for the regular-season opener in question. Running back Patrick Taylor was knocked out with a shoulder injury, and then rookie running back Corey Kiner was carted off the field after his ankle apparently got twisted up on a tackle after a 19-yard run. The 49ers lost starting right guard Dominick Puni and two other offensive players in the first half. Puni left with a knee injury on the game's first drive while blocking for a field goal, and coach Kyle Shanahan said the second-year pro will miss 'a few weeks.' Shortly after Puni's exit, backup running back and special teams player Patrick Taylor Jr. left with a shoulder injury. Next, it was rookie running back Corey Kiner, who is battling for a roster spot. Kiner replaced Taylor but left with an ankle injury after an 19-yard carry. Kiner was carted off the field. Shanahan said Taylor dislocated his shoulder and Kiner suffered what was 'most likely a high ankle' sprain, and both are expected to miss a couple of weeks. 'I mean, (we'll) just deal with it,' Shanahan said. 'Hopefully, we get a bunch of guys back here and we don't lose anyone for the year or anything like that. We got pretty good luck on defense and special teams today, so that was good. 'But losing those three guys on offense was tough. But they won't be off forever, so hopefully they'll heal fast.' The 49ers already had more than 20 players injured, including a banged-up group of wide receivers. Star running back Christian McCaffrey has looked healthy this summer after missing most of last season with Achilles tendinitis and a knee injury. But four of his backups — including Jordan James (finger) and Isaac Guerendo (shoulder) — are now injured. 'We lost our two and three a couple weeks ago, and then the next guys up, we lost them today, but all those guys will be back,' Shanahan said. 'We've been through that before.
