Assam: Six detained after plastic bottle hurled at CM's convoy
Among those detained are Pallab Chetia, secretary of the Golaghat District Congress Committee, and Rahul Phukan, son of a former Block Congress Secretary.
Both are reportedly associates of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi.
Golaghat MLA Biswajit Phukan (BJP) linked the act to the Congress's "politics of disruption," citing historical references like the Emergency and the 1983 elections.
"The Chief Minister came with a development agenda, but Congress cannot tolerate his popularity," he said.
The incident, captured on video, shows the bottle being thrown at the convoy, though no injuries or damage were reported.
Assam Power Minister Prasanta Phukan called it a "serious security breach" and demanded a security review, alleging an "attempt on the Chief Minister's life."
The BJP also staged protests in Dibrugarh, condemning the act. The Congress, however, dismissed the allegations as politically motivated.
Congress spokesperson Rituporno Konwar claimed four Youth Congress members were "illegally detained" an hour before the incident during a separate protest against cattle theft.
"If they weren't present, how could they have thrown the bottle? This is a tactic to suppress dissent," he said.
Sarma downplayed the incident with sarcasm, but the opposition accused the BJP of exaggerating the event to target Congress workers. The case has intensified scrutiny over security lapses and political vendettas in Assam.
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Bhupen Borah has condemned the incident of attack on Himanta Biswa Sarma and said, 'It is very unfortunate that someone threw a bottle on his convoy. The act is condemnable. Congress believes in democratic agitation and protest.'
Dhubri Congress MP Rakibul Hussain said, 'I was also attacked by a few miscreants on the road; however, at that time, the Chief Minister took a potshot at me.'

Guwahati/New Delhi: Manipur follows a process of issuing Aadhaar to adults that is considered the "most stringent" in the country, a senior official of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) said at a meeting with Governor AK Bhalla in the state capital Imphal on Tuesday. For minors, the state makes it a must for parents or guardians to update their details - free of cost - when they are between 5 and 7 years old, and after turning 15, the state government said. "It was also noted that each case of adult Aadhaar has to be mandatorily scrutinised and approved only at the level of State HQ in the office of Special Secretary Home," the Manipur government said in a statement on Tuesday. One of the UIDAI officials present in the meeting observed that "Manipur's adult Aadhaar process is perhaps the most stringent in the country." The high-quality checks and scrutiny process ensure that no illegal foreigners are able to obtain Aadhaar, the government said. Based on the guidelines of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the UIDAI, the "rigorous scrutiny in Manipur ensures that approval is granted only after detailed verification of Aadhaar applications," it said. Those who attended the meeting at the Raj Bhawan included the chief secretary, and senior officers from the home department, UIDAI, social welfare, and education departments. In June 2024, a huge racket of issuing fake Aadhaar and voter identity cards to illegal immigrants in Manipur was busted. Investigators released samples of the fake identity cards held by two Myanmar nationals, who were found living among locals in a district in Manipur. At a meeting with MHA officials in Delhi On Monday, a delegation of three top civil society organisations from Manipur asked the Centre to begin the National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise or a similar mechanism in the border state to address the issue of illegal immigration.

DMK to begin door-to-door campaign tomorrow
Coimbatore: Former electricity minister V Senthilbalaji on Tuesday said the DMK members would meet 11.58 lakh families in the district to explain to them the state govt's achievements, especially the schemes for the people of Coimbatore, in the past four years. "DMK functionaries and cadres will meet the residents in person and inform them about the injustices being done to Tamil Nadu by the BJP. They will simultaneously carry out the membership campaign.
