DK Suresh appears before ED in probe linked to woman posing as his sister
Bengaluru: Karnataka Congress leader and former member of Parliament (MP) DK Suresh appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Bengaluru on Monday, in connection with a case involving a woman accused of impersonating his sister and defrauding a local jeweller. DK Suresh (File Photo)
ED summoned Suresh after the arrest of Aishwarya Gowda, who is alleged to have used his and his brother and deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar's names to cheat a businessman of nearly ₹ 9.82 crore.
Ahead of his appearance, Suresh criticised ED's actions and questioned the agency's jurisdiction. 'Both the Supreme Court and high courts have stated that ED is crossing its limits. If, despite these observations, ED fails to correct its course, it puts the democratic system of the country at risk,' he told reporters.
The case against Aishwarya Gowda involves accusations of cheating, impersonation, and laundering proceeds of crime. She was arrested by ED on June 21 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), after searches at multiple locations in April led to the seizure of documents and nearly ₹ 2.25 crore in cash. According to officials, she had falsely introduced herself as the sister of the two Congress leaders to extract gold and money from a Bengaluru-based jeweller.
While Suresh's name surfaced because of the impersonation, he has denied any financial links to the accused. 'There is no financial connection or transaction between that woman and me. I had only attended two programmes, and she met me at my office three or four times to discuss a few matters. But there is nothing related to this case,' he clarified.
He further added, 'She resided in the constituency, I met her and attended a couple of programmes with her. There's nothing beyond that. I will provide ED with all the information they seek.'
Suresh also claimed his voice may have been mimicked to carry out the alleged fraud. 'It is alleged that my voice was mimicked and crimes were committed using it. The Karnataka police have investigated this and multiple cases have been filed at the police station. I am not aware of the outcome of that investigation.'
Maintaining that he would cooperate fully, Suresh said he had arrived at the ED office with his legal counsel. 'I will come to know after the questioning. Their questions will reveal the direction of the investigation. That will also make it clear whether I am connected to the case or not,' he said.
He also criticised the agency's motives. 'It is evident that ED is acting as a puppet of the central government. Let me see what they will do.'
Responding to the developments, DK Shivakumar defended his brother and questioned the attention the case has received. 'ED has summoned my brother based on someone's statement. People have the right to meet their elected representatives at their offices. He is ready to answer all questions.'
Shivakumar also referred to his own experience with ED. 'We are ready to face any investigation. What happened to the ED case that was filed against me? No one came to my rescue, and eventually, I got justice from the judiciary.'
Calling out what he described as selective media coverage, he said, 'Why is the media projecting this as such a major development? There are certain stories you never highlight, yet you choose to highlight this.'
BJP state president BY Vijayendra and leader of opposition R Ashok didn't respond to calls for a comment on the allegations by Suresh.

Police foil ‘murder plot' by Khalistan group chief
New Delhi: intercepted an arms consignment allegedly belonging to Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) chief Arsh Dala, foiling a potential targeted murder plot. The weapons were procured to carry out a shooting incident in Delhi-NCR on Dala's orders, sources claimed. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Ekamjot Singh Sandhu, a key member of the gang, was arrested with four semi-automatic pistols and three spare magazines. According to DCP southeast (II) Aishwarya Sharma, officers from the special task force led by ACP Daleep and inspector Shiv Kumar conducted a raid based on a tip-off and apprehended Sandhu at the bus stand near ESI Hospital in Okhla. Four pistols—two of .30 bore and two of .32 bore—were recovered from him. The investigation revealed that Sandhu was procuring firearms from Madhya Pradesh-based suppliers and supplying them to Paramjeet Singh alias Pamma Bhikhi, a key member of the Arsh Dala gang in Punjab. The gang has a fierce rivalry with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, resulting in several killings in Delhi, Punjab and other states. Sandhu belongs to Mansa, Punjab. Police are interrogating him to identify other members of the gang and uncover the forward and backward linkages of arms trafficking in the case. Dala took over the reins of KTF after Hardeep Nijjar's killing by unidentified men. He has been on the 'most-wanted' list of India since he orchestrated the murder of a Hindu man in Delhi in Dec 2022. Dala, wanted for multiple criminal offences in India, fled to Canada in July 2020. He has been linked to multiple heinous crimes such as murder, extortion and targeted killings, with more than 20 FIRs registered against him. He first came on the radar of Indian agencies after his role came to the fore in the murders of two Dera Sacha Sauda followers in 2020 and 2021. In Jan 2023, Dala was declared a designated terrorist by the Union home ministry.

Bishnoi gang claims responsibility for 2nd killing in a month in Canada
New Delhi: The Lawrence Bishnoi gang has claimed responsibility for the killing of a businessman reported from Canada's Brampton last week. Sources said Goldy Brar supervised the killing of the gang's rival, who apparently refused to pay protection money. This would be the second killing carried out by the gang in Canada over a month's time, the previous one being of Harjeet Dhadda, who the Bishnoi group claimed was financing the Arsh Dala syndicate. Investigators said Bishnoi and Brar accused Dhadda of sheltering the killers of their associate Mahal Singh at his farmhouse in Uttarakhand. The latest victim who was shot on Friday has been identified as MP Dhanoa, who was in his thirties. He was gunned down in a drive-by shooting at an automotive complex shop located on Rutherford Road South and Selby Road in Brampton. Peel Regional Police told the local media that its officers responded to the shooting around 5.45pm. Upon arrival at the complex, police discovered a man with multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics rushed him to a trauma centre in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries. The local administration blamed an "India-based crime network" for the "targeted killing". A Facebook post by Bishnoi's man Friday Rohit Godara read, "We are responsible for the killing. I called him a week ago for protection money because he made money through a lot of wrong things and he came out on bail from jail some time ago. When I called him, he misbehaved with me. We told him that we will definitely take him out.. . lightly. This is a warning for those whose name is included in our hit list, we will definitely kill them." The group has of late stopped tagging their kingpin Bishnoi in their posts to shield him and give the impression that they are operating separately. However, investigators dismissed these claims as frivolous attempts to mislead the law enforcement agencies. In May, 51-year-old Dhadda of Brampton was shot multiple times after being approached by unknown suspects in a parking lot near Tranmere Drive and Telford Way in Mississauga. Investigators said they found common patterns in the killings of Dhanoa and Dhadda—Brar being a key link and conspirator. Two of Brar's henchmen, Aman and Digvijay, were held in June for Dhadda's murder. According to social media posts from his children, Dhadda, a Canadian resident since 1997, received threats in recent years, which were reported to police, but no action was taken.

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri pays tribute to Kanishka bombing victims in Ireland
Cork [Ireland], June 23 (ANI): Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri signed the Visitors Book at the Ahakista Memorial in Ireland on Monday, paying tributes to the Air India Kanishka bombing victims. On June 23, 1985, Air India Flight 182 was blown up by the Canada-based Khalistani terrorist group Babbar Khalsa near Cork, Ireland, resulting in the deaths of all 329 passengers on board. Sharing the pictures of the memorial service, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote, 'United against Terrorism: '40th anniversary of Air India Flight 182 Kanishka bombing.' 'On behalf of the people and Government of India, a 7-member delegation led by Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas @HardeepSPuri paid tributes to the victims at the Ahakista Memorial in County Cork, Ireland. Irish Prime Minister HE @MichealMartinTD, Canadian Minister of Public Safety HE Gary Anandasangaree @gary_srp and families of the victims joined the memorial service,' the post added. Speaking at the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Air India Flight 182 (Kanishka) bombing, Puri said, 'The world needs to come together - not only in isolated episodes of solemn mourning such as these, but in collective, proactive efforts to combat terrorism.' Recalling the tragedy of June 23, 1985, when Air India Flight 182 was destroyed mid-air by a bomb planted by Canada-based terrorists, killing all 329 on board, including over 80 children, Puri said the tragedy was not an accident but a 'deliberate, heinous act carried out by fringe elements seeking to divide India.' The Minister stressed that terrorism and extremism are not issues of the past but present-day threats that continue to endanger innocent lives across the world. 'India has suffered the scourge of terrorism for decades -- from Jammu & Kashmir to Punjab to Mumbai. Time and again, our people have endured bombings, assassinations, and atrocities,' he said, while noting that countries across the world are grappling with this problem as he highlighted that global terrorism-related deaths increased by 22 per cent in 2024. Calling upon the Government of Canada to join India in countering this shared threat, Puri said: 'Canada is a valued partner and friend. We share vibrant cultural and economic relations with each other. India and Canada are bound by democratic traditions.' He urged deeper collaboration between the two nations through intelligence sharing, counter-radicalisation efforts, and the disruption of terror financing. 'India stands ready to do more. Our security agencies, intelligence apparatus, and diplomatic channels are fully committed to partnering with the world to ensure that such tragedies are never repeated.' The commemoration ceremony was attended by Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin, Canadian Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree, local Irish officials, first responders, and families of victims, all coming together in solemn remembrance.
