Camborne boxing club hopes new home will secure its future

BBC News28-07-2025
Building a new home for Cornwall's oldest boxing club would help encourage more young people to take up the sport, coaches have said.Camborne and Redruth boxing club has drawn-up plans to knock down its existing home of 60 years and replace it with a purpose-built facility. The club said it had submitted the proposals to Cornwall Council and a decision was now due to be made this autumn. It hopes to then secure about £750,000 of funding, with the intention of completing the work by the start of 2028. Coach Paul Murray said: "We need to make sure we keep going - not just for the youth of Camborne but for the history of boxing in Cornwall."
The club currently operates out of a 1940s pre-fabricated building on an industrial estate on the outskirts of Camborne.Mr Murray said the current building was no longer fit for purpose and they had no choice but to build a new one. "Our changing rooms and facilities are not up to the modern standards our governing body expect - so it's now time for us to replace the building with a modern, vibrant building that will be sustainable," he explained.
The new gym would be two storeys high and include a ring with spectator seating to allow the club to host competitions. It would also have community space and a cafe to bring in additional revenue. The club hosts training sessions for under-10s, juniors and adults most weekday evenings. Josh, 14, from Camborne, said he was excited by the plans for the new gym."I think loads of people would come here if it looked like that. I want to be a boxer. Having a better facility will help people get better," he said.Kyros, 15, also lives in Camborne and admitted that without the club he would probably just stay at home and be on his phone."I think it's a really good place and it's better than going out and making trouble," he said."It helps me mentally and if I have any anger during school it helps me get it out."
Tegan, who is 16 and from Redruth, hoped more modern facilities would attract more girls to the club. "The new building would give us female changing rooms, female toilets. I think it would be great to have more facilities to train and progress," she explained.Mr Murray said they have had conversations with the Department of Culture, Media, and Sport and hoped to access government grants for the new building. He said: "Having a more modern club will bring in more children, more young adults and give them more things to do - to keep them off the street, to get them out of trouble, to stop being on their iPads and computer games. "It'd give the youth of Camborne and the surrounding area somewhere that they're proud of."

Truro City promotion 'a big deal' for Cornwall

Truro City midfielder Billy Palfrey says the club's promotion to the National League is important for the whole county of is the first time a club from Cornwall has reached the fifth tier of English football, and Truro have become the county's first fully professional side. Palfrey, who was born and raised in Looe, first joined the club in 2017."It's a big deal really for the county, and I'm obviously personally buzzing," the former Plymouth Argyle academy player said."I think somewhere like Cornwall needed a team to push on, and hopefully it helps young kids come up as well."The more backing we get, the better we'll be, hopefully, as proven last year, but to me it means a lot, and hopefully we'll kick on and push on and go further." Truro only returned to Cornwall last season after almost four years without a permanent home and playing on the "wrong" side of the Tamar river that separates the Duchy from neighbours was a river crossing that Palfrey has got to know well, having come up through the Plymouth Argyle ranks before playing for Truro at temporary homes such as Plymouth Parkway, Torquay United and Gloucester City over spells - the first from 2017 to 2019 and the second beginning two years says going from playing in front of a hardcore group of around 50 supporters to gates in excess of 3,000 last season was huge for the club. "I think it's proven this year that we need the fans to push us along, and they have," he told BBC Radio Cornwall."Last year, we weren't at this ground, we weren't even in the county, and it's been like that for a long time, and obviously we weren't getting many supporters."But this year coming home and getting promoted has proven that - I think it's just been a massive, massive part of it, and they've just helped us get over the line."Now hopefully they can help us push even more, and we will need them, so the more the better for us."While Palfrey expects a noticeable step up in quality in the opponents he and his teammates will face, he is also excited to see how the Tinners will fare at a national level for the first time. The club begins their season with an away trip to Wealdstone on Saturday before their first home game in the National League seven days later - an occasion Palfrey said he and his teammates could not wait for. "Everyone's going to be buzzing. It should be packed here, and obviously that will get us right up for it."I think that will be massive and it will just be exciting times, really."The first home game for us in this league is massive, and we are going to need every single fan to get us over the edge."

Caitlin Clark scolds Indiana Fever teammates as they beg for swimsuit endorsement deal

Caitlin Clark didn't have much patience for her sunbathing Indiana Fever teammates before Tuesday's loss in Los Angeles. With the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year nursing a groin injury, Fever teammates Sophie Cunningham and Lexie Hull spent their pre-game poolside, where they solicited swimsuit endorsement deals on TikTok. 'We are off to our game tonight,' read the post on Cunningham's page. 'Convince us there's a swimsuit brand that wants to partner with two Indiana Fever mermaids.' Cunningham and Hull sported black bikinis in the short clip, garnering a wave of responses online, including a scathingly funny comment from Clark. 'Swimsuit brands,' Clark wrote, 'plz comment 'focus on basketball.' Then, after giving swimsuit brands ample time to make an offer, Clark went in for the kill: 'And no one responds.' Unfortunately for the Fever, the rest of their Tuesday in Los Angeles wasn't any better. Not only did they lose to the Sparks, 100-91, but the defeat was briefly interrupted by yet another sex toy being thrown onto the court by a hostile spectator. Tuesday's incident in LA followed similar interruptions in Chicago and suburban Atlanta, where one man has been arrested for allegedly throwing sex toys at WNBA games. Cunningham previously warned fans against throwing sex toys onto the court, only to have the projectile slid into her foot during the second quarter of Tuesday's loss. 'No way that thing actually hit me,' an embarrassed Cunningham wrote on social media, adding: 'I knew I shouldn't have tweeted that.' Cunningham also addressed the disturbing trend in her 'Show Me Something' podcast. 'I was thinking about like, if someone threw that thing and like, first of all, the bounce that that thing had, if that smacks someone in the face, you know that's gonna be plastered everywhere,' Cunningham said. 'I just know how things go viral now. And I just know that thing like, even came from like the rafters or bounced and just slapped me right in the face. That would be what I'd be known for, for life. So I was just trying to protect all of our images.' After giving swimsuit brands ample time to make an offer, Clark went in for the kill Meanwhile, a Georgia man arrested for allegedly throwing sex toys onto the floor of two WNBA games last week was publicly identified Tuesday after being booked on multiple charges in an Atlanta suburb. Delbert Carver, 23, was released from Clayton County Jail in Jonesboro on Sunday one day after being charged with disorderly conduct, public indecency/indecent exposure, and criminal trespass, according to online records. Police say he was arrested after throwing a sex toy onto the court during the Atlanta Dream's win over the visiting Phoenix Mercury on Friday. He also allegedly confessed to police that he was involved in a similar incident in Atlanta's July 29 loss to the visiting Golden State Valkyries - a shocking moment that went viral last week and appears to have inspired copycats in Chicago and Los Angeles . Carver was allegedly live streaming Friday's incident in Atlanta before being apprehended.
