While Trump Fires Salvos, India Builds: $300 Billion Trade Target With US Powers Ahead

News18a day ago
Last reviewed in Feb 2025, a special report by IBEF, in partnership with PHDCCI, projected that India-US bilateral trade could touch a staggering 300 billion dollars by 2026–27.
With Donald Trump, the President of the United States of America, continuing to fire salvos at India in a series of provocative Truth Social posts and also imposing tariffs through those posts, India's official response has been measured, but not inaction. While the political rhetoric escalates, the groundwork for an ambitious economic future between the two nations was quietly laid years back. Last reviewed in February 2025, a special report by India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), in partnership with the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) projected that India-US bilateral trade could touch a staggering 300 billion dollars by 2026–27.
IBEF is a trust established by the Ministry of Commerce. The trust's primary objective is to promote and create international awareness of the – Made in India label – in markets overseas and to facilitate dissemination of knowledge of Indian products and services. That future-focused assessment by several trade watch agencies – national and global remains on track, senior government officers, informed about the current situation, confirm.
The United States has already cemented its position as India's largest trading partner. And behind the scenes, far from the drama of campaign rallies and Truth Social tirades, India is meticulously advancing strategic trade partnerships. According to senior officers involved in the process, the Indian government is 'at it" with quiet determination. 'Core national interests, particularly in agriculture, remain non-negotiable, but multiple diplomatic and business channels are open and actively engaging," said a senior officer.
'The $300 billion figure was not just aspirational fluff. It is based on strong indicators from pharma, electronics, defence tech, clean energy, and digital services, these are all sectors where India and the US complement each other," he added.
The report stated, 'Rapidly expanding trade and commercial linkages between India and the US form an important component of the multi-faceted partnership between the two countries. Total bilateral trade (goods and services) between India and the US increased from US$ 20 billion in 2000 to US$ 118 billion in 2024."
'The US emerged as India's biggest trading partner in 2022-23 on account of increasing economic ties between the two countries. According to the provisional data of the Commerce Ministry, the bilateral trade between India and the US increased by 7.65 per cent to US$ 128.55 in 2022-23 as against US$ 119.48 billion in 2021-22," it further added.
It further said, 'Many US companies view India as a critical market and have expanded their operations. Many Indian companies are investing in the US and adding value. According to a CII study released in April 2023 ,163 Indian companies invested over US$ 40 billion in the US and created over 425,000 direct jobs. "
Calibrated and calculated approach
India's posture has been calibrated. The government has not reacted to every political jab. Instead, it stayed focused on long-term economic diplomacy. The February report noted that India's manufacturing base, skilled workforce, and regulatory upgrades are making it an increasingly attractive alternative to China, a shift that Washington, regardless of who is in power, is paying attention to as well.
Sources say upcoming bilateral meetings may focus on strengthening semiconductor supply chains, easing investment norms, and enhancing market access in non-sensitive sectors. India, however, will draw the line on issues like agricultural imports and digital data regulations, areas where sovereignty and local industry are at stake.
Even as Trump's words trend, India's trade strategy and foreign policies seem to be quietly at work.

"Held multiple meetings on Bangladesh, Foreign Secretary Misri addressed all queries": Shashi Tharoor on Parliamentary Standing Committee meeting

IANS Congress MP and former diplomat Shashi Tharoor (File Photo) Following the Parliamentary Standing Committee meeting on External Affairs held on August 4, Committee Chairperson and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor stated that multiple meetings were held on Bangladesh, during which Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri addressed all queries raised by the members."We have held 3-4 meetings on Bangladesh, and this was the last meeting where the Foreign Secretary has given us a briefing, and in this briefing, all the questions that the Members had to ask were discussed. The Foreign Secretary has answered all of them," Tharoor told added that the Committee will now prepare its report, which will be placed before Parliament. "After this, it is our job to write a report, adopt it and present it to the Parliament. Before doing that, I cannot tell what we will decide, what advice we will give..." he said. The Parliamentary Standing Committee met on August 4 to review the future of India-Bangladesh relations. The meeting saw officials from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) presenting evidence on the future of India-Bangladesh relations. The agenda also included a review of the draft report on action taken by the government on recommendations made in an earlier report concerning the MEA's demands for grants for 2024-25. According to Tharoor, the August 4 meeting marked the final round of deliberations on the issue. He reiterated that the Foreign Secretary had briefed the panel and addressed all queries raised by the members. The committee will now prepare, adopt, and present a report to Parliament. The panel had earlier met on June 27, during which it heard the views of experts on the topic 'Future of India-Bangladesh Relationship'. Following the meeting, Tharoor stated that the Committee benefited from the insights of "four first-class experts." He also noted that the number of Bangladeshis entering India had declined in recent times."You will see our report in the next few weeks... We didn't discuss (the issue of Bangladeshis living in India). But we were told about a figure that the number of Bangladeshis coming to our country has lessened now," he said. India-Bangladesh ties have seen some strain in the recent past. Meanwhile, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor also commented on the 25 per cent tariffs imposed on India by US President Donald Trump, stating that the matter is expected to be discussed on August 11. "I think the tariffs will be discussed on 11th August," he said. Trump, in a recent post on his Truth Social platform, stated that a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods would be implemented from August 1. He also warned of additional penalties over India's oil trade with Russia."Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country. Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia's largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to stop killing in Ukraine - STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE - ALL THINGS NOT GOOD! INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST 1st. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. MAGA!", Trump posted.

Did Jack Daniel sense a looming doom for the Kentucky whiskey market? Here's a blow-by-blow breakdown

It seems the smooth pour of Kentucky whiskey has hit a rough patch, and Jack Daniel's parent company, Brown-Forman, appears to have sensed it coming. Brown-Forman plans to outsource barrel production, aiming to save $70-$80 million annually amid a struggling bourbon market. (AP Photo/Toby Talbot, File)(AP) Just this January, the Louisville-based spirits giant announced that it's cutting 12% of its global workforce and shutting down its very facility where it's been handcrafting barrels since 1945. The decision, expected to impact around 210 employees, is to save between $70 million and $80 million annually. Following Jack Daniel's exit, the message is clear: the whiskey business isn't what it used to be. Brown-Forman also shuffled and appointed Jeremy Shepherd as its new chief marketing officer. 'These actions reflect the venerable company's 'relentless focus on evolving our strategy, our portfolio and our organization to grow and thrive,'' said CEO Lawson Whiting, per AP. 'Today's announcement will ensure we have the structure and teams in place to continue on this path, while also making investments that we believe will facilitate growth for generations to come.' Kentucky whiskey market is going through bankruptcies While Brown-Forman is trying to stay nimble, this week a string of bankruptcies has shaken the state's $9 billion whiskey industry, according to the Kentucky Distillers' Association. LMD Holdings, the parent company of Luca Mariano Distillery in Danville, filed for Chapter 11, with court documents showing a jaw-dropping $25 million in liabilities. Garrard County Distilling, a $250 million operation that only began production in 2024, was shut down in April due to mounting debts. Even Stoli Group USA, along with its Kentucky Owl whiskey label, filed for bankruptcy after a double blow: declining spirits demand and a cyberattack that crippled operations. What experts said The problems are starting to mount industry-wide, whether it be inflation-strained consumers, Gen Zs' recent shift to not wanting whiskey, or renewed tsarphobia over tariffs on American liquor in the export markets.
