Bucs' Cade Otton not held in high regard by PFF in preseason rankings
The Bucs have struggled with the tight end position in recent years despite their best efforts to get a hit at it.
Pro Football Focus looked at the position across the NFL and listed their top 32 tight ends, and the Bucs' very own Cade Otton did not earn a very favorable spot on the list. Otton, one of the many former Washington Huskies on the Tampa Bay roster, came in at the 20 spot. To explain his bottom-half ranking, John Kosko writes about the one thing holding him back from going higher in rankings.
"Otton's Achilles' heel is drops. He has the third most (11) at the position across the past two years. His 63.1 PFF receiving grade in 2024 was a career high and also marks the first time he generated more than 1 yard per route run (1.31). If he can hang on to the ball (also three fumbles the past two years), Otton has the skills to rise on this list."
Otton emerged as a favorite candidate for Baker Mayfield after Chris Godwin's injury in Week 8. He became the safety valve Godwin was for the Heisman Trophy winner, and as a result, expectations increased.
Otton is the third-ranked tight end in the NFC South, according to the rankings behind Tayson Hill (15) and Kyle Pitts (19).

The New York Jets have perhaps the best cornerback in the NFL in Sauce Gardner.
The New York Jets have perhaps the best cornerback in the NFL in Sauce Gardner. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Jets have taken a lot of pride in their defense over the past several seasons, especially their ability to defend the pass. Advertisement And there is one player who really shines in that area. In a recent article by PFF's John Kosko, he ranks who he believes are the top 32 cornerbacks in the league heading into the 2025 season. At the top spot in his list, he has Jets superstar Sauce Gardner. "Gardner's 91.9 PFF coverage grade since 2022 leads the league. He has forced a league-high 46 incompletions and allowed a league-low 0.60 yards per cover snap and 21.4% first-down-plus-touchdown rate over that span," Kosko wrote. "Unsurprisingly, Gardner's PFF advanced coverage grade ranks first, as well. While he might not shadow opposing wide receivers at a high rate, he has excelled when asked to do so." He had a bit of a slower season in 2024, but so did the rest of the Jets. With that being said, he has racked up some impressive stats in just three seasons in the league. Advertisement Gardner was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2022, as well as being named First Team All-Pro in both of his first two seasons. He also led the NFL in passes defended in his rookie year with 20, which goes to show just how good the 24-year-old corner already is. He will be looking to bounce back from his slightly disappointing 2024 and prove that he is still worthy of the title of the best cornerback in the NFL. Garrett Williams is only Arizona Cardinals CB in top 32 per PFF
Garrett Williams is only Arizona Cardinals CB in top 32 per PFF Williams ranks 22 in PFF's top 32 CBs entering 2025. The Arizona Cardinals have a young group of cornerbacks. Of the four top players on their roster, Star Thomas and Garrett Williams enter their third NFL seasons, Max Melton enters his second and Will Johnson, selected in the second round in April, is a rookie. As such, they haven't proven much in the league, except for one. PFF ranked the top 32 cornerbacks in the NFL and Williams makes the cut, coming in at No. 22. After struggling in his rookie season and missing more than half the year, resulting in a 57.2 PFF coverage grade, Williams was excellent in 2024 with an 83.7 PFF coverage grade (fourth best) and the seventh-best PFF advanced coverage grade. If he's able to replicate his sophomore campaign in which he allowed 0.68 yards and the second-fewest yards in coverage, Williams could jump into the top 10. If Williams continues to play at the level he did last season, if Melton takes a second-year leap and if Johnson is as good as many believe he can be, the Cardinals' secondary will be very, very good in 2025. Buccaneers Tight End Confident In Offensive Level Up With Josh Grizzard
Buccaneers Tight End Confident In Offensive Level Up With Josh Grizzard originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offense last season under Liam Coen was one of the best in football. Advertisement With Baker Mayfield orchestrating things, and Mike Evans, Jalen McMillan, Bucky Irving, Rachaad White, and tight end Cade Otton all making plays, Tampa Bay was a force. But now, with Coen in Jacksonville with the Jaguars, it is passing game coordinator from 2024 in Josh Grizzard, who steps up into the big chair to be the leading voice in Mayfield's ear. As OTAs continue for the Buccaneers, Otton is confident that Grizzard can get the necessary improvement out of the unit. "We were a really good offense last year but we still have room to improve and I think he's going to do whatever it takes to get us there," Otton said. Nov 19, 2023; Santa Clara, California, USA; Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Cade Otton (center) runs after a catch against San Francisco 49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga (right) and linebacker Fred Warner (54) during the second quarter at Levi's Yamashita-Imagn Images Granted, improving on last season won't be an easy thing to accomplish with the Buccaneers averaging 29.5 points per game (ranked fourth), and averaging 146.5 rushing yards per game (ranked fifth), while Baker had a career year, throwing for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns. Advertisement If Grizzard can improve on that, Tampa Bay is in the thick of the Super Bowl race. As for Otton, he's coming off a career year, posting 600 yards and four touchdowns from 59 receptions as he stood up amid injuries on offense. He had a three-game stretch of 10+ targets and 77+ yards, along with three touchdowns, before reinforcements arrived. Now entering his fourth season, Otton will look to help Grizzard take what was already a strong offense last season to even greater heights in 2025.
