Oakland man arrested after $1 million Sacramento County jewelry store smash-and-grab
According to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to a jewelry store near Stockton Boulevard and Orange Avenue in South Sacramento around 1:15 p.m. on July 6.
Deputies said at least eight suspects arrived at the store in two separate vehicles. One of the suspects pepper-sprayed a security guard as they were entering the store, while a ninth suspect held the door open.
Two suspects used blunt objects to smash display cases and ransack the store. Video provided by the sheriff's office showed multiple suspects gathering large amounts of jewelry worth about $1 million.
The video then shows the suspects fleeing the scene in the two vehicles, which were parked in front of the store.
Multiple customers and employees were in the store at the time the robbery took place, deputies said.
Following the incident, deputies were able to identify a primary suspect in the case. The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Leo Smith of Oakland, was arrested in Hayward.
According to the sheriff's office, Smith had a loaded firearm in his vehicle at the time of his arrest.
Jail records show Smith is being held at the Sacramento County Main Jail on charges of robbery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Smith is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday afternoon.

A Central Texas man is facing five counts of manslaughter after a fiery crash near Austin last month killed five Dallas-area women on a birthday trip, authorities said Wednesday. Kody Lane Talley, 37, of Leander, is being held on a $1 million bond in the Burnet County Jail, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. The victims, all in their early 20s, were on a weekend trip to the Central Texas community of Kingsland to celebrate Salinas' 23rd birthday. Salinas' family told CBS News Texas the five were like sisters and had been friends since middle school. "Words can't describe how devastated we are," the family said in a statement. "We were en route to celebrate Thalia's birthday in Kingsland, Texas, at her favorite place — on the lake — with all her favorite people. Then we got news of the girls' passing away in the worst accident we could ever imagine. We will never recover from losing Thalia, Brianna, Ruby, Jacki,e and Desi." GoFundMe accounts have been established for each of the five families to help cover funeral and memorial expenses. The investigation into the crash is continuing, DPS said.

Police shooting investigation underway along Murray Avenue in Greenfield
An investigation is underway following a late-night police shooting in Pittsburgh's Greenfield neighborhood. Allegheny County Police said their officers are responding to a shooting along Murray Avenue that happened just after 10 p.m. on Wednesday evening. Details are limited at this time but dispatchers told KDKA that one person was taken to the hospital following the shooting. Their condition is unknown at this time. Vancouver police renew call for information into 2023 stabbing death on Granville Street
Vancouver police are asking for public help as they continue to look into the stabbing death of a Surrey, B.C., man two years ago. Jose Kaze, 32, was stabbed on Granville Street between Smithe and Nelson streets just before 3:30 a.m. on Aug. 4, 2023. Just over two years later, police say they believe there are witnesses to the crime who have yet to come forward. "We ... know that the Granville Mall continues to be busy at around 3 a.m., especially on weekends," Const. Jason Doucette said Wednesday. "We are confident that people around the area would have seen something." Doucette said Kaze was killed near the Roxy Cabaret, and witnesses who have already spoken with police reported there were other people around at the time. "Two years has gone by. This is somebody's son. This is somebody's partner," he said. "We need you to do the right thing and come forward and share the information," he added. "A little piece of information could put this investigation into full gear, and we can hold the person accountable who did this." Doucette said police have been in touch with Kaze's family over the last two years, and victim support services are available for anyone who was "living with something that [they] saw for the last couple of years." He's asking anyone with more information, including anyone driving by that day in August 2023, to come forward to police. "There would have been an altercation. You would have seen lots of emergency vehicles. Any little bit of information could help us break this case," Doucette said.
