An 81-year-old man died immediately after being hit by the car, while two women were injured and transferred to the hospital, local media reported.
Italy celebrates its Liberation Day, known as 'Festa della Liberazione,' with a national public holiday on April 25. In addition to the closure of schools, public offices and most shops, the day is marked with parades and demonstrations across the country.
The accident in Lanciano happened at the end of the local parade organized by ANPI, the Italian partisans' association that preserves the memory of the Resistance movement against the Fascists.
The ceremonies are held in commemoration of the end of the Fascist rule and the Nazi occupation during World War II, as well as the victory of Italy's partisans movement.
This year the 80th anniversary of the liberation coincides with the five-day period of national mourning for the death of Pope Francis, with the right-wing government urging organizers to carry out celebrations with due 'sobriety.'

In a chilling development, the Italian mafia are said to be becoming more and more comes after police shame British drugs mules by making them pose for photos with suitcases. Experts are warning that the beautiful island popular with British families has become a gateway for organised crime groups. It is clear Tenerife is starting to be flooded with Class A drugs, making it more and more dangerous with increasingly volatile turf wars. Mafia expert Antonio Nicaso told the Sun that crime is now getting out of control on the island: He said: 'Several organised crime groups operate in Tenerife. Amongst the most prominent are Italian mafia clans, especially from Camorra, Ndrangheta and the Casamonica Family. 'These groups originate from regions such as Campania, Calabria, and Rome and they are involved in large-scale money laundering, cyber fraud, and cocaine and hashish trafficking, often using Tenerife as a hub. 'British gangs, mainly from cities like Liverpool and Manchester, control much of the street-level distribution of drugs in tourist areas and have reportedly clashed with Italian groups over territory, which has led to turf wars and occasional violence.' While Tenerife has been long been seen by Brits as just one more Spanish holiday destination, its more sinister side has come into focus as investigators probe the death of Jay Slater. Before the discovery of his body, police on the island were said exploring all possibilities – including conspiracies he has been kidnapped. Gang experts have said in the past Italian organised crime groups are increasingly working with local criminals to bring cocaine into Europe from Latin America – often using the Canary Islands as a staging post of illegal shipments. A Europol statement said these 'Ndrangheta gangsters would routinely use 'violence and torture' to intimidate their rivals. "The presence of Italian Mafia groups across Spain is multidimensional,' writes organised crime expert Professor Anna Sergi. 'The lifestyle, similar climate, and language are considered some of the reasons why Italian Mafia members …have often chosen Spain as new country of activity and residence." Spain's Balearic Islands are well known for drug trafficking – a senior member of the De Micco clan was recently caught running drugs into Ibiza. But anywhere that tourists gather is a prime target for drug dealers: a member of the clan Mazzarella was arrested last year on drugs offences in Gran Canaria. Eight Mafia gangsters, as well as a Colombian cartel boss, were arrested in a major operation on Tenerife in December 2023. An armed police raid on a Tenerife villa uncovered some 950 kilos of uncut cocaine, as well as a stash of weapons and thousands in cash.

The minors were tracked down at a Roma settlement on Via Selvanesco, according to Il Fatto Quotidiano. The stolen Citroën reportedly skidded, crashed into a curb and struck De Astis - throwing her several metres into the air - before slamming into a nearby road sign. The impact was said to have been devastating - despite emergency services' quick arrival, nothing could be done to save the woman. First National Guard troops arrive in Washington DC as Trump begins his takeover of capital to bring quick end to crime
THE National Guard has officially arrived at Washington, DC, after Trump called them in to 'take our capital back.' The president called the National Guard in on Monday as a way to control crime in the nation's capital. 3 3 3 National Guard members were seen heading into the District of Columbia National Guard Headquarters on Tuesday morning. Several guards were photographed lugging their bags as they headed into the building. The president confirmed this week that the DC police department will now be under federal control, as he sent 800 National Guard members to the capital. "This is Liberation Day in DC, and we're going to take our capital back," Trump said during a press conference. "I'm announcing a historic action to rescue our nation's capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor and worse." Trump said that the capital had been "taken over by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals" as well as "drugged out maniacs and homeless people". The president called upon Attorney General Pam Bondi to manage the National Guard's takeover of the police department. Trump argued that DC has worse crime rates than notoriously crime-heavy cities such as Baghdad, Brasilia, San Jose, Colombia, Mexico City, and Lima, Peru. During his press conference, the president presented a chart that showed each of those cities with lower murder rates than DC. However, data from the DC police show that violent crime in DC is down 26% compared with last year.
