"We still have a T20 World Cup before that, and that is again a huge tournament that is going to happen in India, which is in February-March. So the entire focus at the moment, after England, will be on the T20 World Cup, and November-December 2027 is still two-and-a-half years away," Gambhir had told CNN-News18 in an interview.
"And I've always said one thing - if you keep performing, age is just a number," he added.
India are to feature in a 3-match ODI series against Australia in October this year, post which a similar assignment against South Africa has also been scheduled. Certain reports, however, suggest that the BCCI selection committee is keen to move on from the veteran duo and give youngsters a chance, in order to prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Some claim that the Australia series could be the last for Rohit and Kohli, though they can keep themselves afloat by returning to domestic cricket. The Vijay Hazare Trophy and India A games could be crucial for Kohli and Rohit if they are to extend their ODI careers and remain in contention for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Though Gambhir made it clear that performance is going to be decisive when it comes to ODI team selection, there are a few more factors that might play a role when it comes to Rohit and Virat's future.

Vice-captain Salman Ali Agha top-scored by making 30 runs from 49 balls, and all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz remained unbeaten on 23 runs from 28 balls. As many as five Pakistani batters – Saim Ayub, Abdullah Shafique, Mohammad Rizwan, Hasan Ali and Abrar Ahmed – failed to open their accounts. For the West Indies, fast bowler Jayden Seales picked up six wickets for 18 runs in 7.2 overs, and two Pakistani batters were sent back to the pavilion by spinner Gudakesh Motie, who also completed one catch. The defeat by 202 runs on Tuesday is the first time in 50 years that Pakistan lost an ODI match by a margin of more than 200 runs against the West Indies team. In the third ODI, Seales produced one of the best bowling figures in ODI history to help the West Indies bowl Pakistan out for just 92 runs. The figures of 6 for 18 in 7.2 overs at Brian Lara Stadium helped Seales break Dale Steyn's record of best bowling figures in ODIs against the Pakistani team. Steyn picked up 6 wickets for 39 runs in nine overs against the Men in Green on November 27, 2013, in Gqeberha. Seales is only the third bowler in history to dismiss at least six Pakistani batters in an ODI match. Sri Lankan all-rounder Thisara Perera was the first one to achieve the feat. During the Sri Lanka-Pakistan ODI match played in Pallekele on June 9, 2012, Perera bowled 10 overs and picked up six wickets for 44 runs.
