Sze Fei-Izzuddin make it to Japan Open final in style
PETALING JAYA : Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani kept alive their bid to retain the Japan Open men's doubles title by putting up a splendid display to beat Taiwanese pair Liu Kuang Heng-Yang Po Han in straight games.
The world No 1 pair were in total control as they defeated the up-and-coming duo with relative ease, winning 21-19, 21-11 in a match that lasted 35 minutes at the Metropolitan Gymnasium in Tokyo.
It was the Malaysians' second win in their two encounters so far.
Sze Fei-Izzuddin will take on South Korea's world No 3 pair Kim Won Ho-Seo Seung Jae in the final tomorrow.
In last year's final, Seung Jae-Won Ho lost to Sze Fei-Izzuddin in three games.
In today's match, the top seeds showed sheer fighting spirit by winning the first game even after trailing 8-14 at one point. They gave their opponents little chance of a fightback in the second game with a commanding display.
Sze Fei-Izzuddin are now poised to not only defend their title but also win a second World Tour 750 series this year after their first success at the India Open in January.
In addition, their final appearance assures the duo of maintaining the top position in the Badminton World Federation ranking as they will earn 11,000 points as winners or 9,350 points as runners-up.
The winners in the doubles events will also take home US$70,300 (RM298,500) while the runners-up will receive US$33,250 (RM141,180).

Malaysia men's doubles shuttlers Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King celebrates after winning over Taiwan's Lee Jhe-huei-Yang Po-hsuan during the second round of Malaysian Masters at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil on Thursday. — IZZRAFIQ ALIAS/The Star PETALING JAYA: Men's doubles shuttlers Yap Roy King-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi have an opportunity to make their mark when they compete in the World Tour Super 300 Macau Open which starts today. Roy King-Arif, who are currently ranked No. 24 in the world, have struggled for consistency this year and suffered first-round exits in the back-to-back Japan Open and China Open over the last two weeks after losing to world No. 7 teammates Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun both times. The pair's best result this year is a semi-final finish in the Orleans Masters in March. Roy King-Arif will be keen to do better in Macau where they are seeded fourth. The duo though will face a stern challenge for the title from Indonesia's world No. 8 Sabar Gutama-Moh Reza and India's world No. 12 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty, who are seeded first and second respectively. Before that, the Malaysians have a tricky opening test against China's Ren Xiangyu-Sun Wenjun. Roy King-Arif's best result so far in their careers is a runners-up finish in the Spain Masters which was also a Super 300 event last year.

Costly call: Wrong strategy doomed Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in China Open final, says coach
KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — National men's doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik lost in the final of the 2025 China Open Badminton Championships yesterday because they adopted the wrong strategy. This is the opinion of national men's doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi after watching Aaron-Wooi Yik go down 15-21, 14-21 to Indonesia's Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Shohibul Fikri in the Super 1000 tournament at the Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium in Changzhou. Herry believes that their early strategic errors opened the door for their opponents to dominate from the outset. 'We need to admit that Fajar-Muhammad Shohibul had a better game plan. We, on the other hand, used the wrong strategy in the first game and were left trailing in their wake. 'Their 'no-lift' play (driving the shuttle flat and at pace) was extremely good in the first game. Their attacking quality, especially in the first game, was excellent… they hardly made any mistakes,' he said when contacted by Bernama. Herry also admitted that the strong draught at the venue may have affected Aaron-Wooi Yik's momentum in the final. The defeat marks a worrying trend Aaron-Wooi Yik, the 2022 world champions and two-time Olympic bronze medallists who have now lost six consecutive Super 1000 finals, inluding the All England (2019, 2024); Thailand Open (2020); China Open (2023); and Indonesia Open (2023). For their win yesterday, Fajar-Muhammad Shohibul took home USD148,000 (about RM625,000), while runners-up Aaron-Wooi Yik pocketed USD70,000 (about RM296,000). — Bernama
