In-N-Out billionaire Lynsi Snyder says she is leaving California: 'Doing business is not easy here'

In-N-Out's billionaire owner, Lynsi Snyder, told the "Relatable" podcast she's moving to Tennessee.
She cited challenges running her business and raising her family in California.
In-N-Out is consolidating its California offices and opening a new headquarters in Tennessee.
In-N-Out's billionaire owner, Lynsi Snyder, is done with California.
Speaking on the "Relatable" podcast released Friday, Snyder said she's moving to Tennessee as the cult burger chain plans its southeastern expansion and establishes a new headquarters in the suburbs outside Nashville.
"There's a lot of great things about California, but raising a family is not easy here. Doing business is not easy here," Snyder said.
During the conversation with host Allie Beth Stuckey, Snyder cited COVID-era business restrictions, such as mask mandates and vaccine requirements, as particular elements of California policy that made it difficult to operate in the state.
In 2021, health officials temporarily shut down several In-N-Out locations in California because the chain refused to require proof of COVID-19 vaccinations.
Snyder didn't expand upon her current business challenges or the challenges she's faced raising her four children in the state.
In-N-Out is consolidating its corporate presence in California, centralizing its West Coast operations out of offices in Baldwin Park, where the chain was founded by Snyder's grandparents, and phasing out its Irvine headquarters by 2030. Its new Franklin, Tennessee headquarters is set to open in 2026.
"Now the bulk of our stores are still going to be here in California, but it will be wonderful having an office out there, growing out there, and being able to have the family and other people's families out there," Snyder said.
While the chain is planning to expand in the Southeast with its operations in Tennessee, Snyder said she's "still saying no" to opening locations in Florida and other East Coast states.
In-N-Out has over 400 locations across eight states: California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Texas, Oregon, Colorado, and Idaho. Snyder said that the company will continue to grow, but she's prioritizing sustainable expansion that maintains the quality of its products and service.
"Number one priority is really keeping the company the same company that my grandparents started," Snyder said. "We don't want to be in every state, and we don't want to ever compromise our values and standards and the cornerstones that my grandparents laid down, so it's really just keeping those priorities at the forefront when we make decisions."
Representatives for In-N-Out did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Sam Altman, OpenAI will reportedly back a startup that takes on Musk's Neuralink

Sam Altman is in the process of co-founding a new brain-to-computer interface startup called Merge Labs, and raising funds for it with the capital expected to largely come from OpenAI's ventures team, unnamed sources told the Financial Times. The startup is expected to be valued at $850 million. Merge Labs is also reportedly working with Alex Blania, who runs Tools for Humanity (formerly World) — Altman's eye-scanning digital ID project that 'allows anyone to verify their humanness,' as the company describes. Merge Labs will compete with Elon Musk's Neuralink, which is developing computer interface chips designed to be implanted in the brain. Musk founded Neuralink in 2016 (although its existence wasn't known until 2017) and the company has made serious progress. Neuralink is currently in trials with people who suffer from severe paralysis. It aims to allow them to control devices with their thoughts. It raised a $600 million Series E at a $9 billion valuation in June. Neuralink (and perhaps, Merge Labs) could revolutionize how humans interact with technology. Some might even say their tech could take humanity towards 'the singularity.' Long before Silicon Valley became obsessed with the concept of artificial general intelligence (AGI), it was enamored with 'the singularity.' Musk has used the term to describe a time when AI surpasses human intelligence. The more classic definition (after a 1960's novella of the same name by Dino Buzzati), means the merging of tech with humans. Altman blogged about 'The Merge' in 2017. 'Although the merge has already begun, it's going to get a lot weirder. We will be the first species ever to design our own descendants,' he postulated at the time citing research work he saw at OpenAI, where Musk was still a co-founder. Just this week, Altman and Musk were bickering on X after Altman accused Musk of manipulating X and Musk called Altman a liar. We'll have to wait and see when and if Merge Labs becomes formally announced. But it stands to reason that Altman wasn't going to let Musk work on something as important as the singularity without a challenger. After Fatal Explosion, Focus Turns to Steel Mill's Future and Past

A day after an explosion killed two workers at a U.S. Steel plant, age-old questions were raised on Tuesday about the safety of the inherently dirty and dangerous business that has defined the Pittsburgh region for more than a century. Officials expressed relief that the air showed no discernible traces of sulfur oxide, which can hamper breathing, and they promised a full accounting of what happened when a routine Monday morning at the Clairton Coke Works was shattered by a gas explosion in two battery ovens. One of the dead is Timothy Quinn, 39, a second-generation steelworker and father of three who was described as a leader with a wry sense of humor. The other worker who was killed has not been publicly identified at the family's request. Ten other people were injured in the explosion. 'We owe them an answer for what happened,' Gov. Josh Shapiro said at a news conference on a scorching Tuesday afternoon after meeting with the loved ones of the steelworkers who died. 'We owe them the answers to their questions, and we owe them to never forget the sacrifices that occurred here yesterday.' The mill is one of three plants that are part of the recent $15 billion merger between U.S. Steel and the Japanese company Nippon Steel. The Biden administration had blocked the deal, but the Trump administration approved it in June. The merger was hailed as a victory for the region as Nippon pledged to pump $2 billion into the mill, which sits along the Monongahela River about 15 miles south of Pittsburgh. But Monday's explosion brought to the fore the troubled safety history at the mill, where coal is converted through heat into coke that later is melted into liquid steel. Want all of The Times? Billy Joel closing Long Island motorcycle shop 20th Century Cycles

Billy Joel will be closing 20th Century Cycles, his popular motorcycle shop on Long Island. For the past 15 years, the Oyster Bay shop has showcased the singer's private collection of expensive and rare motorcycles, which he spent decades gathering. Shortly after its grand opening, Joel shared a video about why he wanted to give the community an inside look. "People don't get to see all these kinds of bikes all together in one place," he said. "I actually grew up not far from here, and I'd like to get a little interest going into the town." The closure comes as Joel, 76, is in the middle of selling his Oyster Bay estate and relocating to Florida after being diagnosed with a brain condition. Locals are disappointed the shop is closing down. "It's always cool to sometimes see him coming in or out," Oyster Bay resident Alice Balducci said. "This is one of the prime things to do in Oyster Bay, is to see the motorcycles," resident Stephen Sprachman said. Maalika Mehta remembers meeting Joel at the shop back in 2018 when she was 8 or 9 years old. "He was such a sweet person to talk to," she said. In 2023, a part of the road the shop sits on was named Billy Joel Way. Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino says that won't change even after the shop closes. "While we may be losing this motorcycle museum, we're not losing our love," he said. The shop will remain open on weekends only through the end of August as motorcycle parts are sold off. There's no word yet on when the store will be closing its doors for good, or what will be replacing it.
