BSL's special-grade steel boosts Navy vessels

Bokaro: The Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), a unit of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), has supplied special-grade steel for Navy vessels, INS Ajay and INS Nistar, to boost India's defence indigenisation efforts.
INS Ajay, the final vessel in the series of eight anti-submarine warfare shallow water crafts (ASW-SWC), was recently launched by the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd.
INS Nistar, designed for submarine rescue and deep-sea operations, has been commissioned by the Hindustan Shipyard Ltd. as India's first indigenous diving support vessel.
The chief of communications with the BSL, Manikant Dhan, said, "SAIL-Bokaro has consistently been at the forefront of meeting the Indian Navy's steel requirements."
"Our DMR 249A special-grade steel plates, known for strength and high durability critical for operational efficiency and survivability of naval ships, have been used in several warships and frigates," he added.
BSL had provided special steel for warships like INS Vikrant, INS Vindhyagiri, INS Nilgiri, and INS Surat.
The use of this indigenously produced steel not only enhances the structural integrity and stealth capabilities of INS Ajay but also supports the demanding underwater functions of INS Nistar, which will perform submarine rescue, deep-sea diving, and continuous surveillance missions.
Every tonne of steel delivered contributes to strengthening India's naval infrastructure and advancing self-reliance in defence manufacturing, said an official.

Those remaining plants in Delhi-NCR must meet a December 2027 deadline, while the others will be requested to fit the devices on an individual basis. Originally, these plants were required to install FGD devices by 2017. However, over the years, they have received various extensions to comply. — Flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) devices remove SO2 from flue gas, a thermal plant byproduct. They were needed to install FGD devices by December of 2017. — However, this did not occur, as the deadline was extended four times at the request of thermal plants. They said that installing FGD devices was expensive and may result in a number of concerns, including power outages due to installation shutdowns and an increase in electricity rates. Indian Navy Bolsters Maritime Presence: INS Sandhayak Concludes Malaysia Visit, INS Nistar Commissioned

Indian Navy's indigenously designed and constructed Survey Vessel (Large), INS Sandhayak, made her maiden port call at Port Klang, Malaysia, for hydrographic cooperation from July 16 to 19. This visit demonstrates India's growing role in regional hydrographic capacity building under the Indian Naval Hydrographic Department (INHD) and National Hydrographic Office framework. INS Sandhayak, the first of the indigenously designed and built Sandhayak Class hydrographic survey ship, was commissioned on February 24. The ship has full-scale coastal and deep-water surveying capacity, as well as oceanographic data collection capabilities. It is also capable of SAR/humanitarian operations, featuring an onboard helicopter and hospital functions. The maiden visit of the ship to Port Klang aims to facilitate technical exchanges and strengthen institutional ties through concerted cooperation, such as the sharing of survey technologies and sustained hydrographic support engagements. The key activities during the visit include in-depth knowledge-exchange sessions, official receptions and events designed to foster international goodwill and elevate awareness of the MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) vision. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the Indian Navy for the commissioning of INS Nistar, an indigenously designed and constructed Diving Support Vessel (DSV). In a social media post on X, the Union Defence Minister wrote, "Congratulations to the Indian Navy and Hindustan Shipyard Limited for the commissioning of INS Nistar, the indigenously designed and constructed Diving Support Vessel (DSV)." Highlighting the advanced capabilities of INS Nistar, Singh stated that the vessel is equipped with state-of-the-art systems for conducting Saturation Diving and Salvage Operations. "This induction of the DSV, installed with state-of-the-art Equipment to undertake Saturation Diving and Salvage Operations, as well as serve as the 'Mother Ship' for Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel (DSRV), for rescue and evacuation of personnel from a Submarine in distress, is another milestone in India's journey towards ensuring Maritime Security and Safety in the Indian Ocean Region through Aatmanirbharta," the social media post read.
