The New Shrek 5 Teaser Has Already Split Opinion Right Down The Middle For This 1 Big Reason
The new Shrek movie is still almost two years away, and it's already at the centre of debate.
On Thursday evening, the first teaser for Shrek 5 was posted online, depicting Shrek, Fiona and Donkey using the Magic Mirror as a kind of medieval TikTok.
But even the news that Zendaya will be joining the cast as Shrek and Fiona's teenage daughter was overshadowed by the fact that this latest sequel to the animated classic has a new visual art style that not everyone was happy about.
As the 27-second clip began racking up millions of views, the smoother and glossier versions of the classic characters made many fans of the original films uneasy at the idea of what was to come – with some going as far as comparing it to the first design for Sonic The Hedgehog in his first big-screen outing back in 2019…

Shrek 5 was first revealed to be in the works back in July 2024, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz all confirmed to be returning for the next film in the series.
Originally, it was slated to hit cinemas in the summer of 2026, but this has now been pushed back to December of that year.
The film is the first to be released in cinemas since Shrek Forever After back in 2010, although in that time, there have been several spin-offs – most notably Puss In Boots and its sequel Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, which won a rather surprising amount of acclaim when it debuted in 2022.
Eddie Murphy teased in June 2024 during an interview with Collider that work had already begun on Shrek 5 prior, as well as revealing that his character, Donkey, would be getting his own stand-alone movie, in addition to Shrek 5.

Dean DeBlois Is Hopeful Cate Blanchett Will Return for ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2'
io9 recently sat down with How to Train Your Dragon filmmaker Dean DeBlois to chat about being the steward of DreamWorks and Universal Pictures' dragon franchise. In our conversation, when discussing how awesome it was to see Gerard Butler reprise his role as Hiccup's dad Stoic, we brought up other actors we'd like to see reprise roles or cameo in live-action, including original stars Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, and Cate Blanchett. DeBlois revealed to io9 that he hopes Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett will reprise her role as Valka in the announced upcoming live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon 2. 'We are keeping our fingers crossed,' he said, 'But yeah, I don't know… it's a little early to tell because I'm just writing the script.' Fans of the animated film know how big of a deal it would be to see Blanchett return to the franchise in the pivotal role. It's an early reveal in the sequel that Hiccup's mom Valka, who is mentioned a few times in the live-action film, is alive. And it's a twist that propels the stakes in the animated sequel which picks up five years after the events of the first film. Like Butler, Blanchett could easily slip back into the role and give us another undisputed fantasy genre queen performance to follow The Lord of the Rings' Galadriel and Thor: Ragnarok's Hela. However, we will note that Blanchett has recently talked about wanting to retire, telling the Radio Times last month she has stopped referring to herself as an actress: 'It's because I'm giving up… My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it. I am serious about giving up acting. [There are] a lot of things I want to do with my life.' As far as the original Hiccup and Astrid—Jay Baruchel and America Ferrera—coming back, that would have to be more of a cameo situation. They're older than the characters they played, and Hiccup and Astrid were re-cast with Mason Thames and Nico Parker for the live-action movie. 'We'll see what happens. Jay and America have been really supportive; in fact they weighed in on the casting when I was down to my top three Astrids and Hiccups. I shared them [with Jay and America], just to hear what they had to say, so they've been super supportive,' DeBlois said. 'But I think for their schedules it just wouldn't work out for this movie, but maybe in the future.' How to Train Your Dragon opens June 13.

Netflix's Best New Movie Has Near-Perfect Critic And Audience Scores
The Wild Robot It can be tough to know what to watch on Netflix in a given day or night, but the service has licensed one of the best movies I've seen in recent years, kid-focused or otherwise. While children may have been its target audience, it's a movie that all ages can enjoy. That would be The Wild Robot, the 2024 Dreamworks film about a lost robot that bonds with forest animals and ultimately becomes their guardian against encroaching technology. Here's the synopsis: The Wild Robot has stunning scores from both critics and audiences. With 253 reviews in, The Wild Robot has a 96% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and with 5,000+ audience reviews, an even higher 98%. On IMDB it has an 8.2/10, which in the context of that site, is extremely high, and a full quarter of its reviews are 10/10. Having seen the film myself, I think it very much lives up to these high scores. The Wild Robot It's a kids movie, but it isn't. It's one of those situations where a movie aimed at children can be so good that parents and kids alike will enjoy watching it together as opposed to the adults just sitting around flipping through their phones while it's on. For me, the best part of The Wild Robot is its absolutely gorgeous animation, where I've really never seen anything quite like it. The story is good, sure, perhaps a tiny bit cliché, but there is no frame of this film that isn't fantastic to look at. It's an easy recommendation for all ages, and family statuses. If you don't have kids or aren't watching it with any, it doesn't matter, as it's worth checking out for anyone. There are likely going to be two more films in the series adapting two more books that the first one was based on, but we do not have much information about those as of yet.
