London, United Kingdom: This partnership launches a large-scale, AI-powered service designed to accelerate cancer detection and treatment using medical imaging in the UK's National Health Service (NHS)
The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is ranked among world's top cancer research centers
Marks a milestone in the application of artificial intelligence for cancer research and clinical innovation
The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust , a world-leading specialist cancer center, has today announced a pioneering partnership with NTT DATA , a global leader in digital business and technology services, and CARPL.ai , a leading enterprise imaging artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning operations (MLOps) platform. Together, they have designed and built an advanced AI-powered radiology analysis service for the development and evaluation of AI in medical imaging, designed to transform cancer research and, ultimately, improve patient outcomes.
AI's potential to enhance the speed and accuracy of identifying imaging biomarkers has long been recognized. Funded by a three-year grant from the UK's National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), the service will be used for research at The Royal Marsden and the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), including projects in collaboration with other research teams. This research initiative will focus on developing and evaluating AI algorithms to improve the accuracy of cancer evaluation, including sarcoma, lung, breast, brain and prostate cancers. This will lead to faster response times, more accurate diagnoses and better-targeted treatments.
The service runs on a MLOps clinical imaging platform, built and operated by NTT DATA. To enable this, NTT DATA developed a bespoke AI computing solution leveraging high-performance Dell servers and utilizing the latest GPU processing capacity orchestrated by the CARPL.ai platform, which helps test and manage AI algorithms and includes a large collection of radiology AI models.
NTT DATA is also providing specialist imaging AI consulting services, helping researchers at The Royal Marsden test and evaluate emerging AI tools in real clinical settings, while extracting maximum insight and value from both in-house and commercial algorithms.
'AI has immense potential to support clinicians in diagnosing and treating cancer earlier and more precisely,' said Professor Dow-Mu Koh, Professor in Functional Cancer Imaging and Consultant Radiologist in Functional Imaging at The Royal Marsden. 'By working with NTT DATA and CARPL.ai, we've created a scalable research environment that allows us to explore the full potential of AI safely and in a way that could one day transform cancer diagnosis and treatment across the NHS.'
Minister of State for Health, Karin Smyth, said: 'Our 10 Year Health Plan will modernize the NHS, replacing outdated systems with cutting-edge digital solutions. While this trial is in its early stages, it represents exactly the kind of collaboration between the NHS, industry and academia that will help build a health service fit for the future. Early detection saves lives, and innovations like AI will transform how cancer is diagnosed and treated – helping patients receive faster and more effective care.'
Professor Mike Lewis, NIHR Scientific Director for Innovation, said: 'Cancer is one of the biggest killers in the UK. That must change. This three-year grant will help researchers push the boundaries of AI-driven technology for cancer detection and diagnosis.
'This AI-powered service represents the cutting edge of cancer research and it is going to transform treatment, better support NHS staff and ultimately change patients' lives. It is another great example of how NIHR-funded and supported research will ensure the best care is there when patients need it.'
Tom Winstanley, Chief Technology Officer at NTT DATA UK & Ireland, commented: 'This service is a great example of responsible innovation in practice, showing the ethical, secure use of AI in healthcare. We are very proud to support The Royal Marsden in pushing the boundaries of cancer research.'
Once the service is live, research teams at The Royal Marsden will be able to evaluate a range of AI models across several cancer types. These studies will generate critical insights into how AI can support clinical decision-making and shape future approaches to diagnosis and treatment. Through CARPL.ai's centralized interface and built-in monitoring tools, the research teams will also be able to track model performance over time, enabling faster feedback loops between development and deployment – a crucial step towards clinical translation. NTT DATA will continue to work closely with The Royal Marsden to support this next phase of research which will ultimately improve cancer care and patient outcomes.

Tech Shines as Markets Defy "Sell in May and Go Away" Adage: 5 Picks
Wall Street's popular adages are not matching this year. April is historically known for being favorable to investors. But this year, April ended on a mixed note after severe volatility. For May, the popular adage is 'Sell and Go Away.' However, last month turned out highly successful for U.S. stock markets. The three major stock indexes — the Dow, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite — were up 3.9%, 6.2% and 9.6%, respectively, in May. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite and the broad-market index — the S&P 500 — recorded their best months since November 2023. May's turnaround was primarily attributable to the solid performance of the technology sector. In addition to the Nasdaq Composite, the Technology Select Sector SPDR (XLK), one of the 11 broad sectors of the S&P 500 Index, surged more than 10%. At this stage, we recommend five technology bigwigs with a favorable Zacks Rank that have provided double-digit returns in the past month for investment. These stocks are: Intuit Inc. INTU, Amphenol Corp. APH, Broadcom Inc. AVGO, Twilio Inc. TWLO and Ubiquiti Inc. UI. Each of our picks currently carries a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) or 2 (Buy). Cash boost for South West hospitals
Hospitals in Devon and Cornwall have been given more than £22m for vital repairs, the Department of Health and Social Care has confirmed. It comes as part of the £750m announced for the NHS in England in the autumn budget. Devon's hospitals have been given more than £15m for improvements, while Cornish hospitals will benefit from more than £8m. Health Secretary Wes Streeting said the government was "on a mission" to rebuild the NHS through investment and modernisation. Among the hospitals receiving funding were three of the largest in both counties - the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (RD&E) in Exeter, Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, and the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro. Derriford Hospital has been given £1,815,000 for improvements to ventilation equipment in the neonatal unit. Ashley Dalton MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Public Health and Prevention, during a visit to Derriford Hospital, said the new system would improve environmental conditions for babies receiving specialist care. Elsewhere in Devon, RD&E and North Devon District Hospital, managed by the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, have been jointly allocated £5,412,000 for improvements to ventilation systems, and fire safety works. Various healthcare units, managed by the Devon Partnership NHS Trust, have been given £300,000 for improvements to energy systems. In Cornwall, the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro has been given £4,379,000 for improvements to energy, electrical, and water systems. The Department for Health and Social Care also announced £3.9m for Bodmin Hospital, to improve fire safety. The Department of Health and Social Care said fixing the "backlog of maintenance" at NHS hospitals would help to prevent cancellations. It said services were disrupted more than 4,000 times across England in 2023 and 2024 due to issues with poor quality buildings. Mr Streeting said: "A decade and a half of underinvestment left hospitals crumbling, with burst pipes flooding emergency departments, faulty electrical systems shutting down operating theatres, and mothers giving birth in outdated facilities that lack basic dignity." He said patients and staff deserved to be in buildings which were "safe, comfortable, and fit for purpose." Follow BBC Cornwall on X, Facebook and Instagram. Terrorist moved to NHS unit with board games and film nights
A teenage terrorist who has stabbed 10 prison officers while in custody has been transferred to an NHS mental health unit that offers sports, games and film nights. Nathan Ruth, 18, has been held at Feltham Young Offenders Institute, in west London, since he was jailed for seven years last year after being convicted of plotting an attack at the Isle of Wight Festival. The then 15-year-old had researched weapons, vehicles and stab vests. Prison sources at Feltham have warned that staff at Ruth's new NHS mental health unit are not safe from the Muslim convert extremist, who tried to slice one guard's ear off and stabbed another with a makeshift weapon known as a shank. An intelligence report on Ruth, leaked to the Daily Mail, revealed that he has a history of improvising weapons and attacking staff and intends to kill a prison officer. Between his arrest in July 2022 and sentencing last April, Ruth, who was caught following a tip-off from the FBI, had already attacked prison personnel on 18 occasions. However, he will now be able to take advantage of sports facilities, quizzes, arts and crafts and film nights after being moved to Bluebird House, a secure mental health facility in Hampshire. The centre's website states that staff provide 'a friendly, welcoming and therapeutic environment for our young people'. The unit's three wards care for up to 20 young people and include a relaxation room, sports hall, games room, fitness suite and all-weather sports area. Patients are provided with their own 'homely and comfortable' bedroom with an en-suite. Its website said: 'During evenings and weekends, we plan activities such as sports, board games, quizzes, arts and crafts and film nights.' According to the Mail, guards at Feltham have worn full riot gear when they deliver food to Ruth or allow him out to shower or exercise. Prison officers said they were shocked at his move. 'He has stabbed so many officers while in Feltham, and openly boasts to staff that we will see him on the news one day,' a source told the Mail. 'We can't believe they have let him go. He has 100 per cent manipulated the system to get himself sent somewhere more comfortable. What really annoys staff is that he has received no further prison time for all the stabbings against staff. 'They just want to focus on his rehabilitation. Well, tell that to the officer who nearly lost an ear. He is a stone-cold psychopath, the scariest I have ever seen. He will not stop until he has killed someone. Staff at that place do not know what they are letting themselves in for.' A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: 'Prisoners can be transferred for treatment in mental health hospitals, based on assessments by expert clinicians, but will return to prison once they are fit to do so. We do not tolerate violence against our hard-working staff and will always push for the strongest possible punishments for those who break the rules.'
