Waitrose issues urgent recall over Salmonella fears
Waitrose is recalling Waitrose and Partners Egg and Spinach Protein Pot because it may be contaminated with Salmonella.
Symptoms caused by Salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea, and abdominal cramps.
If you are experiencing these symptoms, you should stay away from work, school, or nursery until you have stopped having symptoms for at least 48 hours to avoid passing it on to others.

A spokesperson said: "Waitrose is recalling the above product. Point of sale notices will be displayed in stores that are selling this product.
"These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product. Please see the attached notice.
"If you have bought the above product do not eat it. Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund. For further information, please contact Waitrose Customer Care 0800 188 884, Option 4."

FDA issues highest recall alert for 33,000lbs of snack food distributed nationwide... 'reasonable probability of death'
An urgent recall has been issued for a popular snack distributed nationwide for being contaminated with a diarrhea-causing bacteria. Texas-based Navarro Pecan Holdings issued a voluntary recall of 32,670 pounds of pecan products on July 10 due to concerns about potential Salmonella contamination. The products were distributed to commercial and retail distributors in five states; Texas, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Arkansas and New Jersey. They were also distributed internationally to Italy, the Netherlands and UAE, the FDA said. The government agency has updated the recall as Class I, as the nuts have the potential to be contaminated with the bacteria salmonella, which hospitalizes 26,000 Americans every year. A Class I recall is a 'situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death'. The FDA says salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with the bacteria often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. No other products produced by Navarro Pecan Holdings have been impacted and as of yet, there have been no reported illnesses. Founded in 1977, Navarro Pecan Holdings prides itself on being one of the largest pecan shellers in the world. It is not clear how the Salmonella contamination was discovered. Salmonella is an infection contracted from eating foods contaminated with animal feces. It typically causes diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps that begin six hours to six days after initial infection. Most people recover within days, though the illness is responsible for more than 26,000 hospitalizations and 400 deaths a year. The CDC estimates that most Salmonella infections are linked to chicken, fruits, pork, and seeded vegetables (such as tomatoes). But any food can become contaminated, even processed foods, such as flour. Nuts can become contaminated with Salmonella during various stages of production, including pre-harvest, harvest, processing, and storage. Contamination can occur from soil, contaminated harvesting equipment, and inadequate storage conditions. Moisture during the storage period can also contribute to the spread of Salmonella. The recalled products from Navarro Pecan Holdings include small and medium pecan pieces and mammoth pecan halves. Distributors and consumers who purchased the pecans should return it to the retailer for a full refund. The FDA has advised anyone who falls ill after eating the product to contact local health authorities. Most people sickened with salmonella suffer from a four to six-day illness that causes stomach cramps, diarrhea and abdominal pain. But officials warn children under five years and adults over 65 years old are more at risk from the bacteria because they have a weaker immune system. In serious cases, the bacteria can cause bloody stools and prolonged vomiting. People can die from salmonella via dehydration or if the bacteria enters the bloodstream, which can lead to sepsis, a life-threatening reaction.

Funeral details released for Belfast teacher (30s) who died from spinal cancer weeks after wedding
The funeral of a Belfast man who was battling a life-limiting illness will take place later this week, it has been confirmed. Matthew Starkey spoke to the Belfast Telegraph earlier this year about being diagnosed with a 'fast growing stage 4 spinal tumour'. He shared that he had a lot to look forward to; a new teaching job, a new home, and an upcoming wedding. But he revealed that what started out as a seemingly innocuous football injury, had sent his life down a path he never could have imagined. At the time Matthew, who was a teacher at St Colman's Sixth Form College in Ballynahinch, was in hospital but said he was ready to throw everything back at life once he was released. He had hoped to take part in the Belfast Half Marathon in a wheelchair, raising funds for the Friends of the Cancer Centre. In June, Matthew tied the knot with his fiancée Carrie, describing it as: 'Marrying the woman of your dreams, surrounded by your nearest and dearest and overcoming some hurdles along the way. Pretty special day all round.' On Monday, Matthew's family announced he had passed away surrounded by his loved ones at the Marie Curie Hospice. A funeral notice has said that Matthew will be reposing at his grandmother's house in the Four Winds from today. 'Visitors welcome Tuesday and Wednesday between 1.00pm - 4.00pm and 6.00pm -10.00pm,' the notice added. 'Funeral service will be celebrated on Thursday 7th August in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Knockbracken Drive, Carryduff at 10.30am followed by burial in Roselawn Cemetery.' The funeral notice is concluded with a quote from American disability rights activist Helen Keller. It reads: 'What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes part of us.' 'Matthew loved cooking and food, so we had many great conversations. Anytime I wanted to try a new dish for our menu, I could always rely on Matthew to be the one to try it and give me his honest opinion. 'People may ask why the sock photo? For me, that just epitomises his sense of humour, and his bright and colourful outlook on life—which he always had. That particular morning we got him those socks, he put them on, and we took that photo. 'As a small team, we all enjoyed nights out together and had many heartfelt conversations and belly laughs on those nights. I am so grateful to have had them.
