Adopting new technologies is great challenge for future engineers: Tessy Thomas
Thomas, a distinguished scientist and former director general (aeronautical systems) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), made the comments while addressing the 56th convocation of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi.
'At a time when the world is rapidly digitizing, adopting new technologies and ensuring those technologies are ethical, inclusive and sustainable is a great challenge for future engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs and leaders. Whether it is decarbonization, water conservation, digital equity, bio-innovation or an engineering marvel, let it be your contribution to society," she told the graduating students.
Asserting 'human values will matter more than the valuations" in a world 'increasingly driven by data, algorithms and automation", Thomas said, 'IIT education has prepared you to build systems and has trained you to be custodians of trust in a world dominated by technology." 'You are entering a world brimming with complexity and creativity. In this decade, the world needs problem solvers, dreamers who implement, builders who take action and leaders who execute. Move on with the spirit of innovation, humility to learn from others and courage to walk paths uncharted," she added.
Twenty-year-old Chandan Godara, BTech in Civil Engineering, is the youngest graduate, and 63-year-old Gopal Krishan Taneja, PhD, is the oldest graduate to receive their degrees.
The first graduates in the BTech course in Energy Engineering and three PG courses, the Interdisciplinary MTech course in Robotics and the Master of Science by Research in VLSI Design, Tools and Technology, and Artificial Intelligence were awarded degrees as well.
The institute also honoured seven of its esteemed alumni with the Distinguished Alumni Awards (DAA) 2025 at the convocation ceremony.
Instituted in 1992, the DAA has been awarded to 151 alumni to date, representing excellence across diverse fields such as science, technology, entrepreneurship, public service, academia and innovation. PTI GJS AS AS AS

IIT-G leads defence-academia synergy with research centres
1 2 Guwahati: In a step towards strengthening India's defence innovation ecosystem, IIT-Guwahati is spearheading the establishment of Manekshaw Centres for Defence and Security Research across premier academic institutions nationwide. The initiative, under the ministry of education, aims to create a unified platform connecting the armed Forces, security agencies, and research institutions. A delegation led by IIT-G director Prof Devendra Jalihal and chief patron of the Manekshaw Centre of Excellence, recently briefed Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan on the rollout of nodal centres dedicated to defence and national security research. Joining Prof Jalihal were Prof Manindra Agrawal, director of IIT Kanpur and deputy chief patron, and Lt Gen (Retd.) Dr Subrata Saha, executive chairman and COO of the centre. "Manekshaw Center will act as an interface between Indian academia and defence forces. IITs, IISc, IIITs and NITs will be members of the centre. The centre will periodically carry out dialogs with defense agencies and will participate actively to define and design systems for Indian security needs. It will work towards finding Indian solutions, thus fulfilling the aspiration of Atmanirbhar Bharat ," Prof Jalihal said. IIT-K lays foundation stone for KSS bldg
Kanpur: The Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-Kanpur) laid the foundation stone of the building of Kotak School of Sustainability (KSS). The ceremony was officiated by director, IIT-K Professor Manindra Agrawal, and attended by deputy director prof Braj Bhushan, dean KSS professor Sachchida Nand Tripathi, senior officials from Kotak Mahindra Bank; deans and several faculty members of the institute and members of the KSS Advisory Council. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The KSS building is envisioned as a LEED Platinum-certified and Net Zero Energy facility that integrates sustainable design, energy-efficient systems, and eco-sensitive construction practices. The building will be constructed using innovative green materials such as bamboo, hempcrete, engineered wood, mycelium-based materials, and recycled components and will serve as a hub for sustainability research and action. Prof Manindra Agrawal said, "Today we laid the foundation stone for the building that will be a LEED Platinum, energy-efficient, green building, and I am confident that this building will accelerate our capacity to deliver high-impact translational research in sustainability." Dean of the Kotak School of Sustainability, stated, "This space will allow us to convene experts, students, and stakeholders under one roof, pushing the boundaries of what sustainability science and innovation can achieve for India and the world." Launched in Dec 2023, the KSS at IIT-K was established with financial support from Kotak Mahindra Bank Limited as part of its CSR initiative.
