Tetra Pak sees strong growth potential beyond daily sector

HO CHI MINH CITY: Tetra Pak, a Swedish-Swiss multinational food processing and packaging solutions company, sees strong growth potential in Malaysia and across Asia-Pacific beyond the milk category, said its president and CEO Adolfo Orive.
He highlighted growing consumer demand for a variety of beverages such as plant-based, fruit juices, coffee, iced tea, protein-enriched, oatmeal and energy products, signalling a broader shift in the Malaysian and regional beverage markets.
Orive said that globally, the demand for protein is on the rise, and Malaysia is no exception, protein is becoming increasingly important to consumers.
The whole of Asia-Pacific is a great source of those new beverage categories, he said.
'Our role is to support a wide range of products tailored to different age groups, lifestyles and consumption.
'We commit to making food safe and available everywhere, and that is what we have been doing for more than 75 years,' he told Bernama.
Additionally, Orive stressed the importance of sustainable packaging solutions that have a positive impact on the environment – currently, about 70% of Tetra Pak's packaging materials come from renewable sources, contributing to lower carbon dioxide emissions.
'We believe our packaging is already a strong and positive option in terms of sustainability, and we are committed to going further.
'Our goal is to keep investing in innovations that make our packaging even more sustainable for society as a whole,' he said.
Tetra Pak has invested about €500 million (RM2.49 billion) in research and development over the past five years, underscoring its commitment to innovation, sustainability and meeting the evolving needs of the global food and beverage industry.
On Thursday, Tetra Pak announced the expansion of its facility in Binh Duong, Vietnam, with the launch of Phase 2, following an additional investment of €97 million.
This follows the inauguration of Phase 1 in 2019, as the company aims to better serve the growing demands of Vietnam and the broader Asia-Pacific markets.
Serving as a regional production hub, Tetra Pak Binh Duong supplies packaging solutions to Vietnam and several key Asia-Pacific markets, including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand.
The production capacity at Tetra Pak's Binh Duong facility has reached 30 billion packs annually.
Currently, Tetra Pak operates an office in Malaysia, which primarily serves all consumers and customers in the country.
Among the notable companies using Tetra Pak's packaging in Malaysia are Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd, Farm Fresh Bhd, and Nestle.
Asia-Pacific remains one of the world's most dynamic food and beverage markets, valued at US$667 billion (RM2.8 billion) in 2023 and projected to reach US$900 billion by 2028.
Meanwhile, Tetra Pak Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines and Indonesia managing director Michael Wu said the company views Malaysia as a stable and reliable market.
'We see Malaysia as a secure baseline, and each year we target around 2% to 3% value growth to stay ahead of inflation. At the same time, we see strong potential to drive more innovation here,' he said.
Wu noted that many of the products launched by customers in Malaysia have been in the market for years, and there is a clear opportunity to introduce new offerings, especially for younger and more diverse consumer segments.
'Malaysia is uniquely multiracial, with Malays, Chinese, Indians (and other ethnic groups), as well as a growing number of foreign tourists or residents. That diversity presents a valuable opportunity to innovate,' he explained.
Before its expansion, Tetra Pak's Binh Duong facility supplied only 60% of the packaging materials used in Malaysia. However, following the upgrade, over 95% of the packaging material for the Malaysian market is now produced at the Binh Duong site, he said.

Malaysian authorities dismantle Islamic State-linked funding network

Xinhua 04 Jul 2025, 17:45 GMT+10 KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Malaysian authorities have dismantled an Islamic State-linked funding network operating in the country, which mainly relied on Bangladeshi nationals working in Malaysia, Inspector-General of Police Mohd Khalid Ismail said on Friday. According to Bernama, Mohd Khalid told a press briefing that the group collected funds by charging an annual membership fee, as well as other voluntary contributions based on members' financial means. The group's members were working in labor sectors such as factories, construction sites, and petrol stations across Malaysia. "The funds collected were then transferred abroad using e-wallet applications and international money transfer services," he said, adding that no Malaysians were found to be involved. Mohd Khalid added that the group also used social media platforms and messaging apps to recruit new members.

AirAsia inks US$12.25b Airbus deal to add long range jets

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia has signed an agreement to buy US$12.25 billion (RM51.72 billion) worth of long-range Airbus 321XLR aircraft, with deliveries confirmed by 2028, said Capital A Bhd chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes. He said the low-cost carrier inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Airbus in Paris today for 50 A321XLRs with rights for 20 A321XLRs, the new fleet of which are targeted to serve Central Asia, the Middle East and Europe, among others. "This will probably make us one of the largest users of the XLR aircraft, the 321XLR, and is really the next stage of our transformative growth in terms of creating the world's first low-cost multihub network carrier. "This will enable us to fly to Europe, and we're hoping to launch our first European flight this year," he said during Capital A's virtual media briefing on Friday, in conjunction with the agreement signing ceremony. The agreement was signed between Fernandes and Airbus Commercial Aircraft chief executive officer Christian Scherer, witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Fernandes said the next-generation A321XLRs will operate alongside AirAsia's all-Airbus fleet of A320 Family and A330 aircraft, and aims to carry 150 million guests annually by 2030, reaching a cumulative total of 1.5 billion guests since inception. He said AirAsia plans to finance the aircraft order through bank leases. Fernandes also confirmed that the group is set to announce another aircraft order next month, but declined to provide further details. Meanwhile, he said the group is working to issue its first bond by October this year. "This is the first time in our history that we've been rated by international credit rating agencies. "As interest rates begin to moderate, which I'm hopeful will happen soon, it's only natural for us to return to our traditional model of owning aircraft. "Previously, we shifted from the financing markets to operating leases due to high interest rates and strong capital availability in the leasing space. We're now reassessing that strategy," he said. On Capital A's proposed regularisation and restructuring plan, Fernandes said the company is expecting to resubmit the decision letter to Thailand's Securities and Exchange Commission within the next week or two. "Once we dispose of the aviation business, Capital A will effectively exit Practice Note 17 (PN17)," he said. He said that six of the group's non-airline businesses, namely Asia Digital Engineering (ADE), Teleport, AirAsia MOVE, OTA, BigPay, Santan, and AirAsia Brand Co (ABC) are currently exploring the possibility of a dual listing in Hong Kong. As for Capital A, it is also considering a dual listing and independent capital raising. However, Fernandes said "the AirAsia Group itself will not be listed in Malaysia". – Bernama

PM discusses high-impact strategic partnerships with 40 French captains of industry

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today chaired a roundtable meeting with 40 captains of industry from France with operations in Malaysia to discuss strategic investment and partnership opportunities in high-impact sectors at the global level. He said Malaysia offers a strategic position as a gateway into the Asean market, supported by political stability as well as investor-friendly policies and a dynamic industrial ecosystem. "I emphasised that Malaysia is now a major hub in the clean energy, semiconductor, and electrical and electronic sectors, and continues to play an important role in the oil and gas industry. "This potential has also been strengthened with the implementation of investment faciliation initiatives by government agencies," he posted on his personal X account, @anwaribrahim, after the meeting that was held in Paris on Friday. Anwar is leading a Malaysian delegation to the city in conjunction with a two-day official visit to France. French companies that participated in the roundtable session included Air Liquide, L'Oréal, Axens, Schneider Electric and Thales which have been well established in Malaysia and continue to show their strong commitment. Anwar said that at the same time, the government is also focusing on empowering small and medium enterprises so they can participate in the global supply chain and become strategic partners to foreign investors, including through technology transfer, training and talent development. "I also encouraged French companies to explore Special Economic Zones and halal parks in Malaysia as well as to establish collaborations in renewable energy, CCUS (carbon capture, utilisation and storage), the digital economy, defence and aerospace in line with the country's inclusive and sustainable economic reformation agenda," he added. France has remained one of Malaysia's top five trading partners among European Union members. In 2024, the bilateral trade between the two nations reached RM15.95 billion (US$3.63 billion), and for the January-May 2025 period, a total of RM6.26 billion (US$1.49 billion) was recorded. – Bernama
