Australian police charge Chinese national with ‘foreign interference'
Sydney - Australian police said Aug 4 they had charged a Chinese national with 'reckless foreign interference', accusing the woman of spying on a local Buddhist group for Beijing.
Assistant police commissioner Stephen Nutt said the woman had been covertly gathering information on the Guan Yin Citta Buddhist association in Australia's capital, Canberra.
He said she was working under the command of China's Public Security Bureau, the country's main domestic law enforcement body.
'We allege the activitiy was to support the intelligence objectives of China's Public Security Bureau,' said Mr Nutt, from the special investigations division of the Australian Federal Police.
The woman was arrested and charged with 'reckless foreign interference' after police raided a number of houses in Canberra over the weekend.
'During the searches, a number of items, including electronic devices, were seized and will undergo forensic examination,' police said in a statement.
Reckless foreign interference carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. AFP

ST PHOTO: AZMI ATHNI Two specially choreographed aerial displays, done in honour of SG60, wowed the crowd. The first saw six F-15SG jets flying in an arrowhead formation. Then, in unison, the two outermost jets peeled away to rocket in almost-vertical climbs that left a trail of white smoke in the sky, as the remaining four jets held steady in a diamond formation. The second special display featured four F-16 fighters performing a complex diamond cross turn manoeuvre. The jets flew alongside one another in a diamond formation before splitting off in different directions with perfect timing and precision. The action overhead continued during the mobile column segment – the action on land seamlessly integrated for the first time with an aerial flypast featuring 22 aircraft flying in four striking formations. The crowd excitedly waved their flags, as six F-15SG jets thundered in from opposite directions and crossed paths overhead before climbing almost vertically, kicking off the integrated segment. Land vehicles and aircraft took turns to command attention: An array of vehicles from the Singapore Armed Forces and Home Team rumbled on the ground, while an A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport plane, four F-16 fighters, and one G550 airborne early warning aircraft flew above them. Then came the choppers' turn to thrill the audience. Iran arrests 20 alleged spies of Israel

On Wednesday, Iran executed a nuclear scientist named Rouzbeh Vadi, who was convicted of spying for Israel and passing on information on another nuclear scientist killed in Israel's air strikes on Iran in June, state media reported. Judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangiri told reporters in Tehran on Saturday that charges against some of the 20 suspects arrested had been dropped and they were released. He did not give a number. "The judiciary will show no leniency toward spies and agents of the Zionist regime, and with firm rulings, will make an example of them all," Jahangiri was quoted as saying by Iranian media. He said full details would be made public once investigations were complete. Executions of Iranians convicted of spying for Israel have significantly increased this year, with at least eight death sentences carried out in recent months. Israel carried out 12 days of air strikes on Iran in June, targeting Iran's top generals, nuclear scientists, nuclear installations, as well as residential neighbourhoods. Iran responded with barrages of missiles and drones on Israel. Rights group HRANA reported 1,190 Iranian deaths during the 12-day Israeli attacks, including 436 civilians and 435 security personnel. Driver taken to hospital after car hits lamp post in Orchard Road

SINGAPORE - A 32-year-old man was taken to hospital after the car he was driving hit a lamp post in Orchard Road in the early hours of Aug 9 . The police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to the accident in Orchard Road towards Bras Basah Road at about 1.45am on Aug 9 . The driver was taken conscious to Singapore General Hospital, said SCDF. A TikTok video posted by user kp0ds shows a yellow car resting diagonally on the road near a lamp post. A segment of the lamp post's external covering can also be seen on the extreme right lane of the road near the Orchard Rendezvous Hotel. At least two police motorcycles and an SCDF ambulance can be seen in the video, with onlookers standing near the car. In the video, the car's front left tyre looks damaged and deflated.
