Why the love genre comes naturally to film director Vivek Soni

India Today17-07-2025
First it was Meenakshi Sundareshwar, now it's Aap Jaisa Koi. Vivek Soni didn't intend it so, but he's become the go-to filmmaker for love stories on the back of two Netflix originals. As if that's not enough, he has already wrapped another romance, Chand Mera Dil, featuring Ananya Panday and Lakshya (of Kill fame).'I have always loved love stories, and I wait for a beautiful one to come along,' says the young director. 'I am too new to bear any tag. They are a very intuitive thing for me. The genre comes naturally to me. Who doesn't like love stories?'advertisementNetflix audiences sure do his latest heart-warming concoction, starring R. Madhavan and Fatima Sana Shaikh. Aap Jaisa Koi has been trending at #1 on the Netflix India Top 10 since its release on July 11.For Soni, the trick to making a romance click lies in adding 'a personal touch' and telling it with honesty.
'I want to say it with a nazariya,' he says.Aap Jaisa Koi comes at a time when the genre has seen a major fillip with soundtracks of Anurag Basu's MetroIn Dino and Mohit Suri's Saiyaara generating much buzz. After a dry spell at the box-office, the genre received a sizeable boost with a decent performance of Basu's film and a surprise bumper opening for Saiyaara in the range of Rs 15-20 crore. In Aap Jaisa Koi, Soni works with Madhavan, a veteran actor whose charm is one of the winning attributes of the film. 'He is a wonderful actor, so easy to work with. He doesn't think of a scene as his alone,' says Soni. 'He surrendered to the process.'At the same time, Madhavan also contributed, given his experience and own stint as a director (Rocketry: The Nambi Effect). 'He (Madhavan) had thoughts on how we could enhance the script; he is open to magical, spontaneous moments,' adds Soni.Landscape is paramount to Soni's narrative style. 'It's what comes first when I decide a story; it's as important as the crux of the story,' he says. 'I love films which give me an immersive experience, take me to a place and a feeling that I crave for. I try to give the same essence to the audience.' In Aap Jaisa Koi, it's Kolkata and Jamshedpur that form the backdrop against which two hearts bond.Interestingly, Soni's filmmaking experience prior to his directorial debut is in stark contrast to the genre he's associated with. He assisted Abhishek Chaubey on Udta Punjab and Sonchiriya and then worked with Honey Trehan on Raat Akeli Hai.Being on the sets of these films was, if not more, as beneficial as being in film school. 'You learn on the ground' says Soni. 'You realise filmmaking is not about handling ego but pushing the cast and crew and getting the best out of them. How do you bring people from different sets of mind and cultures and different approaches to filmmaking on your page and understand your vision?' More than what to do, he says, these stints taught him what not to do.advertisementWith filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese and Govind Nihalani as favourites and his penchant for all genres, Soni says it's just mere coincidence that his first three efforts are in the lighter space. 'Perhaps after five years, I will make a gritty, dark film,' he says. 'What's important is to listen to your gut. Whatever it is must come from within.'For now, though, Soni is glad to be working with the Dharma banner, which has produced all his films. 'The kind of creative freedom you get, it's rare to find it. You feel empowered; there is trust,' he says. 'You can tell a story the way you want. That's what a creative person strives for.'Subscribe to India Today Magazine- Ends

Unspeakable Sins ending explained: Who killed Claudio, and what happened to Ivan and Helena in the finale of the Mexican erotic thriller?

Unspeakable Sins ending explained: Netflix's Unspeakable Sins throws you into a storm of secrets, power, and betrayal. The Spanish thriller follows Helena, a woman stuck in a marriage with Claudio, an abusive, dangerous businessman with connections to the elite. When she meets Ivan, a young escort, everything begins to spiral. From sex tapes to lies, blackmail to murder, the show doesn't hold back. By the end, viewers are left with a lot of questions. Who really killed Claudio? Were the tapes destroyed? What exactly was Ivan's role? And who's watching them in that final scene? If you're still thinking about it, you're not alone. Let's break it down. Unspeakable Sins recap: Helena, Ivan, and Claudio's dangerous game Helena is married to Claudio, but is completely controlled by him. He beats her, tracks her, and threatens to ruin her life. Out of desperation, she starts seeing Ivan, a sex worker, and the two fall for each other. But their relationship turns into a risky plan: record a sex tape to blackmail Claudio into leaving Helena. Ay Helena…PECADOS INCONFESABLES ya disponible en @NetflixLAT Of course, it doesn't go that smoothly. Claudio disappears, and Helena becomes the prime suspect. Ivan, too, finds himself pulled deeper into the mess. The show slowly reveals that Claudio was part of a network of secret sex parties, using hidden cameras to blackmail other powerful men, like politicians, businessmen, and police officials. Once Claudio disappears, everyone wants those tapes. Unspeakable Sins ending explained: Who killed Claudio? At first, we thought Claudio's dead. But he's alive and hiding, still scheming, still dangerous. He resurfaces just when you least expect him, and suddenly, the threats begin again. Helena and Ivan are once again in trouble. In episode 7, Claudio finally ends up dead. But this time, it's real. For most of the final episode, it seems like Ivan may have killed him. He was at the scene, and evidence is slowly piling up. Helena herself starts to wonder if Ivan could have done it without telling her, but that's not what happened. In a late flashback, we see the real story. It was Helena who murdered Claudio. Last night I watched the first ep of #UnspeakableSins on @NetflixUK. A woman flees her abusive hubby, then spends 13 Thursdays getting back at him with a hot escort but it unravels when they go on a cinema date. AI title? Could have been Unimaginable Evil/Beyond Wickedness! 6/10 She waits for the right moment, sneaks into Claudio's home while he's asleep, and deletes the backups of the sex tapes from his hidden drive. She wears gloves, moves quietly, and stabs him. It's not just murder, it's freedom. Claudio had manipulated her, threatened her life, and kept her trapped for years. This time, Helena took control. She tells no one. Ivan finds out when he returns later and discovers Claudio's body. At first, he's shocked, but he understands later on. Claudio wasn't just a problem for Helena; he had threatened Ivan's son, too. Ivan helps her cover it up. He burns his clothes, cleans the scene, and keeps quiet. The police believe Claudio's death was an internal betrayal or revenge for blackmail. Nobody suspects Helena, and with Claudio finally gone, Helena and Ivan can finally breathe, or so it seems. What happened to the sex tapes in the Unspeakable Sins? The sex tapes were Claudio's weapon, footage from his secret sex parties used to control powerful men. Helena deletes most of them before killing him, but not all are gone. Earlier in the season, we see a press conference where some of the tapes are leaked, including one of Helena and Ivan. While this tape forces Helena to publicly admit to her affair, it helps her image; people see her as a victim of Claudio's abuse. Still, the question remains: how many tapes are left? Were copies made? Did someone else get access? This takes us to the biggest twist. What happened in the final scene of Unspeakable Sins? In the last scene, Helena and Ivan are in Los Angeles, far away from the mess. They look relaxed, finally at peace. But just before the credits roll, a new camera feed appears, and someone is watching them. We don't know who it is. It could be someone from Claudio's inner circle. Maybe Rafael, the lawyer who helped clean up Claudio's crimes or Octavio, who knew about the tapes or even someone else who was blackmailed and wants revenge. It's a reminder that even though Claudio is dead, the mess he left behind isn't gone. The tapes, the secrets, the network, it could all come back. Will Unspeakable Sins get a second season? The ending of Unspeakable Sins gives closure, but not comfort. Claudio is dead. Helena and Ivan are free, but there's a camera watching. A past that could return? It's a warning, sins don't stay buried. Helena got her justice, but she also crossed a line. Ivan stood by her, but now they both carry that secret. And whoever is behind that new camera? They could be the next danger. So, is it really over? Probably not. And Netflix may just be setting up for a second season.

Saiyaara producer denies planting crying, emotionally-charged fans in theatres: ‘These are genuine fan reactions'

Mohit Suri's directorial Saiyaara has surprised many with its strong performance at the box office. Audience reactions from theatres have also been going viral on social media, with several videos showing extreme emotional responses — one person was even seen arriving at a theatre with an IV drip, while others were captured crying uncontrollably or even fainting. While many considered these reactions to be genuine, a section of the internet speculated that it was all a marketing ploy by the makers of the film, accusing them of planting fans in the audience to promote the movie. However, the film's producer has now set the record straight. In an interaction with India Today, Yash Raj Films CEO Akshaye Widhani, whose banner produced the film, refuted all such claims and said, 'None of those people were planted in theatres.' He added, 'Whether it's the person on a drip, the one yelling at the screen, or the guy who took off his shirt and danced – these are genuine fans reacting with real emotions. It's funny when you start receiving calls from people telling you how much they cried, and you're actually thanking them for it. You find yourself saying, 'We're happy you cried,' because that's the kind of emotional connection Mohit has managed to create after so long. This experience of going to the cinema and feeling something so deeply – I honestly can't remember the last time it happened.' In a recent interview with SCREEN, Mohit Suri opened up about how YRF came on board as the producers of Saiyaara. 'I don't think we make our films, our films make themselves. I had directed the sequel of an action franchise — Ek Villain Returns (2022) — and it had not done well. There were a bunch of big-budget, larger-than-life movies being made around then. I was halfway through writing an action movie when I realised that so many films are blowing up helicopters and buildings. I decided to make a romantic musical with newcomers instead. I asked my assistant Sankalp Sadanah to write this movie and got Rohan Shankar to write the dialogues. One day, I bumped into Sumanna Ghosh of YRF and she asked if I've the script of a love story. Within a week, they called me and Adi Sir told me that they were looking for a movie like this,' he said. In its 13 days of release, Saiyaara has earned Rs 413 crore worldwide. It marked debut of actor Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda.
