Drivers urged to pick from 10 cheap cars with the cheapest insurance
You might be surprised to see some of these models on the top ten list, from a Fiat 500 to a trusty Volkswagen, but all of them have one thing in common - cheaper insurance
With more cars on UK roads and premiums going up, it's in your best interest to know the cheapest and best cars to save you money in the long run.
While there are ways to get around cheaper car insurance, whether that's getting a black box fitted to track your driving style or picking up and moving to Leeds or Sheffield – the most affordable spots for car insurance, according to Confused.com.
There's a much simpler option – well, a few, in fact – and that involves buying one of the cheapest cars on this list, provided by experts at Carwow. After trialling and testing, they found the top ten cars you can buy in the UK right now that fall into the lowest insurance groups.
If you're looking for cheap insurance, the Hyundai i10 1.0 auto is a good option, but the compromise with this car is its petrol engine and automatic gearbox. While these aspects of the car aren't preferred, it means that its cheapest model to insurance, the 1.0-litre engine, falls into group one of the lowest payments.
Another car making the list is the Volkswagen Polo 1.0 Life, which requires less compromise on quality, falling into group three of the cheapest premium around. It hosts what the car experts have called an "eager engine" and happens to be very economical.
In order to get that insurance on the cheaper side, you need to look at the basic Polo Life, but it does come with its perks. This model has all-round electric windows and digital instruments, so its inside doesn't appear to be too bare.
Joining them on the top ten list is the Kia Picanto 1.0 DPi 2, which is a car with a slightly sportier feel and more engaging to drive than the Hyundai i10, while they may be identical under the skin. The testing suggests that when it comes to nipping out or driving on country roads, it's surprisingly good fun, and its tiny metre turning circle makes it a breeze for parking in tight spaces.
The SEAT Ibiza also made the list for cheaper cars to insure as a small hatchback, dressed to impress without breaking your bank account. A five-star Euro NCAP crash test has proved that the Ibiza is sure to keep you safe, and it's practical too, with plenty of room for a pair of adults and a big boot to go with it.
Also making the list were the Skoda Fabia 1.0 MPI, the Toyota Aygo X 1.0 Pure and the Volkswagen Caddy MPV 1.5 TSI models. As well as this, they suggest the Fiat 500 1.0 Hybrid, Renault Clio 1.0 TCe Evolution and SEAT Arona 1.0 TSI SE Edition were also some of the cheaper cars to insure.

Are average speed cameras always on? This might surprise you
The UK has over 7,000 speed cameras dotted around on our roads, but are they always on? These cameras are found on various roads with designated speed limits, including those with limits of 20mph, 30mph, 40mph, 50mph, and national speed limit zones like motorways. Typically, we would always assume that if we passed a speed camera, it was on. But this is not always the case. British people may be divided, grumpy and rude to one another in day to day life, but spot a mobile speed camera van, and suddenly we all pull together and have each others backs. Humanity is an absolute hoot. 😂 — Jodie (@jodie_rhianon) March 14, 2025 Are average speed cameras always on? According to Arnold Clark: "It is normally safe to assume that, if you see an average speed camera, it is on and it can see you. "There is only one exception to this rule. If average speed cameras have been set up for some roadworks, there may be a few days after the roadworks are finished where the cameras are still set up. "In this very unique situation (or any other reason for the cameras not to be working), there will be 'Average cameras not in use' signs informing you that the cameras are not working. Beyond this, yes, the cameras are always on." 'Ultra speed camera' can see inside driver's vehicles The Jenoptik VECTOR-SR is the latest in speed camera tech. It can catch drivers speeding on either side of the road, and see inside cars. This means it can catch drivers who aren't wearing a seatbelt or using a mobile phone while driving. The cameras don't flash either, so it might be difficult for motorists to tell if they've been caught. Louise Thomas, a motor insurance expert at said: 'Ultra speed cameras are a big advance in comparison to the standard speed camera which many drivers are used to.
