Local health department reminds you the importance of sunscreen during summer months
VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — With summer nearing, the Vigo County Health Department wants to remind the community the importance of taking care of your skin, especially during the summer months. UV radiation is generally the strongest during the spring and summer months, specifically between April and August. As you spend more time outside, it is important to protect your eyes and skin from UV radiation. For example, using sunscreen and reapplying is key. 'Just as important it is to initially use sunscreen, is also the reapplication of sunscreen every two hours,' said Shelby Jackson with the Vigo County Health Department. 'That's the critical point. You don't want to forget reapplication of sunscreen.' The effects from UV radiation can include sunburns, types of skin cancer, eye damage and immune system suppression. Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer across the United States. If you have any questions or concerns can contact the Vigo County Health Department anytime. Nearly 18K containers of ice cream recalled over plastic contamination concern
If you've recently stocked up on bulk ice cream, you might want to check your freezer. Wells Enterprises is recalling more than 18,000 tubs of its ice cream after discovering some batches may contain bits of plastic. The recall, which started in late April and was made official by the FDA in mid-May, affects 22 different kinds of 3-gallon tubs that were shipped to more than 100 distribution centers across the United States. 3 Wells Enterprises is recalling more than 18,000 tubs of its ice cream after discovering some batches may contain bits of plastic. Wells Flavors involved in the recall include fan favorites like Rocky Road, Mocha Almond Fudge, Country Rich Vanilla, Peanut Butter 'N Fudge, and even Cotton Candy. The list also features a bunch of products sold under popular brand names like Glenview Farms, Johnny Rockets, Scooper Hero, and Planet Smoothie. Many of the recalled items are sold to restaurants and food service providers through companies like US Foods, Gordon Food Service and Sysco. The recall was prompted by concern that some tubs may have small pieces of plastic in them. The affected products have 'best if used by' dates ranging from April to October 2026, so there's a good chance some of them are still sitting in freezers around the country. 3 Peanut Butter 'N Fudge is one of the flavors that is affected by the recall. Wells One of the biggest lots being pulled includes more than 5,000 tubs of Vanilla Frozen Yogurt. Other large batches include Glenview Farms French Vanilla and BIPC-branded ice cream. Wells Enterprises, which is based in Le Mars, Iowa, hasn't released a public statement about the recall yet, and the FDA says the process is still ongoing. This is classified as a Class II recall, meaning the issue isn't likely to cause serious health problems — but eating the affected ice cream could still lead to temporary issues. 3 Wells' Mocha Almond Fudge Premium Ice Cream is also on the list of the FDA's recall. Wells So far, no injuries or health complaints have been reported. But the FDA is urging people to check their product labels and toss any tubs that match the recall info. The full list of affected items, including UPC codes and lot numbers, is available on the FDA's website. For now, Wells is contacting its distributors by email and working to pull the affected products off the market. If you've got any of the recalled tubs, the safest move is to throw them out and reach out to the company with questions. It's a reminder that even trusted brands can slip up — and that it pays to double-check what's in your freezer before scooping.

Franklin Elementary students support pediatric patients
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Students at Wichita's Franklin Elementary School raised more than $2,000 for pediatric patients at Via Christi St. Francis hospital. The students held a coin drive. The money collected bought instruments and therapy kits for the young patients. Amy Gunderson, the nursing manager of the St. Francis pediatric unit, went to Franklin Elementary on Monday to thank the children. She said the toys are very important for the patients. 'This means the world to them,' she said. 'This may be the only bright spot in their day. The musical instruments that they're bringing in, the therapeutic toys to help with their breathing exercises, it makes doing the things in the hospital that are hard, it makes them kind of fun and lets them be a kid at the hospital while also receiving the treatment that they need.' Derby's dinosaur tourist attraction simplifies pricing The teacher who supervised the project wants students to remember their good deed. 'I hope that one, they remember the feelings that they had. They should be prideful. They should feel impressed with themselves, and I hope that they remember these experiences as they go out into the world and into middle school and high school,' Erin Buster, Franklin Elementary music teacher and ambassador sponsor, said. She said this is the most money students have raised for a school service project. For more Kansas news, click here.
