The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) has proposed extending the period for calculating viewer numbers to determine eligibility for full screenings of local films under the Compulsory Screening Scheme from three days to four.
Its chief executive officer, Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib, said the proposal was among the improvements in the amendment to the Finas Act 1981 to ensure fairer opportunities for local producers.

She stated, 'In addition, the initiative also aims to enrich local broadcast content and drive strategic collaboration between industry players and broadcasters, while highlighting local identity through high-quality creative works.' Eight Sarawak production firms received Letters of Acceptance for the Borneo TV Programme Fund to develop 90-minute telemovies or telefilms. The approved companies include Sahabat Qitmir Sdn Bhd, Broad Vision Solutions Sdn Bhd, Lightcube Studio Sdn Bhd, Reka Dinamik Sdn Bhd, Pixbugs Film Sdn Bhd, Ensyio Crates Sdn Bhd, Spektrum Cahaya Sdn Bhd, and Apro Prima Sdn Bhd. Teo added that three Sarawak producers secured the Post-Production Fund, while one benefitted from the Marketing and Exhibition Fund. She emphasised that the special Borneo category enables productions in both the national language and local ethnic languages, preserving cultural heritage. KUCHING, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) has channelled over RM2 million in funding to producers in Sarawak to ensure local creative works can be showcased at both the national and international levels, said Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. She said of the total, RM1.55 million was allocated under the Borneo TV Programme Fund, RM421,000 for the Post-Production Fund and RM139,000 for the Marketing and Exhibition Fund. 'In addition, the initiative also aims to enrich local broadcast content and drive strategic collaboration between industry players and broadcasters, while highlighting local identity through high-quality creative works,' she told reporters after presenting letters for these funds at the FINAS Sarawak office here today.

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia (FINAS) is enhancing social protections for local artistes through a partnership with the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) and the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO). The collaboration is supported by the Federation of Malaysian Film Associations (GAFEMA) to ensure better welfare for industry professionals. FINAS chief executive officer Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib said the initiative enables artistes to enrol in PERKESO's Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SKSPS) and EPF's voluntary i-Saraan scheme. He added that 200 veteran artistes have already been approved for benefits under the PERKESO SKSPS scheme. FINAS has also sponsored the opening of 1,000 i-Saraan accounts, with priority given to unregistered artistes until September 2025. Azmir stated that FINAS is exploring special incentives or dedicated funds for veteran artistes to sustain their contributions to the industry. Future amendments to the FINAS Act will focus on production workers' welfare, including insurance and mandatory contributions through filming licences. PERKESO data shows a significant rise in registered artistes, from 690 in 2020 to 9,000 in 2024. Contributions under the i-Saraan scheme have surpassed RM23 million, involving 3,900 workers with substantial savings. - Bernama
