Dem lashes out at Bessent during heated committee hearing exchange: 'Excuse me'

Fox News12-06-2025
Del. Stacey Plaskett, D-Virgin Islands, lashed out at Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent during a tense House Ways and Means Committee hearing on Wednesday.
"Ma'am, that's incorrect," Bessent said in a response to a chart displayed by Plaskett, which was referencing the cost of living, but the chart only went until February of this year.
"Excuse me. Let me get something straight with you first here. I've seen you interrupt everyone. When you come to someone's house, you respect their rules. And in this house, we don't interrupt individuals. And you're not going to interrupt my time," Plaskett said.
"I'm going to give you time to respond. You may want to jot down some notes about things you don't agree with me on so you can respond to them at that time. But while I'm speaking, as the person holding this time, you will refrain from speaking, sir, until I'm done, until I'm done, then I will give you time to speak, OK?" she continued.
"I look forward to facts," Bessent replied.
"Thank you. I'll look forward to your response whether they're factual or incorrect either," Plaskett replied.
Later on, Rep. Nathaniel Moran, R-Texas, asked Bessent, "Where did [Plaskett] go wrong in her statement?"
"Well, first of all, I would fire the staffer who did that chart, because it stopped in February 2025 and prices are down substantially since then. But that's an inconvenient truth. Secondly, the S&P, if the congresswoman would care to check Bloomberg. The stock market is judged by the S&P, which is the most widely held index by American 401ks is up on the air, up," Bessent said.
When Plaskett attempts to interject, Moran says, "Excuse me, ma'am, it's my time."
"And we don't interrupt, excuse me, we don't interrupt is what I learned," Bessent clapped back. "Since Jan. 1, it is my business for 40 years to know what the stock market does, and it is up in the air."
After the hearing, Plaskett received a range of criticism, including a remark from an X user saying, "Do all these twats have their PMS cycle synced? Someone needs to ship a case of Midol to the Capitol this afternoon."
Plaskett replied to the user's response with an explicit comment.
"Excuse you!! This twat, [c--t], pum pum whatever you want to call it represents an organ that gives LIFE and is resilienr [sic] so thanks for the compliment. I can take one interruption but Bessent was out of control. And…. I know I look good for my age but baby I'm post menopausal and it still works," she replied, with emojis of cherries and a drop of water.
The primary focus of the committee hearing was on trade and tax policies, both of which have sparked serious debate as Congress works through the reconciliation bill, and as the administration negotiates trade deals with other nations. As for Bessent, he'll be on Capitol Hill again on Thursday testifying before the Senate Finance Committee.

White House announces Smithsonian review amid Trump's cultural reckoning

The review aims to adjust not only the museums' public exhibitions, planning and curation, but also narrative standards and collection use. The move is the latest in a sweeping effort by the Trump administration to overhaul how American history and culture is taught and presented in institutions across the country — from universities to museums to Washington's Kennedy Center for the performing arts. The letter outlines that within 30 days, eight Smithsonian museums should select a representative to liaise with the administration and provide a list of selected materials for review. Within 120 days, the museums will have a set window to institute any changes sought by the administration, 'replacing divisive or ideologically driven language with unifying, historically accurate, and constructive descriptions.' Still, the administration officials maintained that their goal 'is not to interfere with the day-to-day operations of curators or staff, but rather to support a broader vision of excellence that highlights historically accurate, uplifting, and inclusive portrayals of America's heritage.' The initial phase of the project will target the National Museum of American History, National Museum of Natural History, National Museum of African American History and Culture, National Museum of the American Indian, National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian American Art Museum, National Portrait Gallery and Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. The administration officials said the museum network should promote the idea of 'Americanism — the people, principles, and progress that define our nation,' in order to 'renew the Smithsonian's role as the world's leading museum institution.' 'Phase II' of the review will involve an additional list of museums, the letter previewed. A spokesperson for the Smithsonian did not respond to a request for comment. Trump has specifically targeted the Smithsonian Institution, singling it out in a March executive order on 'restoring truth and sanity to American history.' The president railed against the network of museums, saying it had 'come under the influence of a divisive, race-centered ideology' and its various branches 'portray American and Western values as inherently harmful and oppressive.'

Trump ushers in new DC tourist event: 'A Live Re-creation of Authoritarianism!'

Oh, the memories you'll create as you witness a city not covered in filth and wonder if the current administration is using the nation's capital as a testing ground for an authoritarian takeover. The current worst job in America is 'Washington, DC, tourism official,' thanks to President Donald Trump's recent decision to call the city 'a nightmare of murder and crime' while sending National Guard troops in to eradicate 'the tents, squalor, filth, and Crime.' Those are direct quotes from the White House fact sheet on Trump's memorandum ordering the mobilization of the District of Columbia National Guard 'to address the epidemic of crime in our Nation's capital.' That epidemic does not exist, of course, but the words of the president tend to carry more weight than police data showing violent crime at a decades-long low. How will DC tourism survive Trump calling the city a filthy hellhole? So, who's going to want to pack up the kids and spend a fun weekend in a place the president of the United States says 'is under siege from out-of-control violent crime'? Do you feel safe going to DC? In the wake of Trump's federal DC takeover, are you worried about crime? Tell us. | Opinion Forum Don't worry, DC tourism officials, I'm here to help. Where some see a Trump-induced tourism disaster, I see a Trump-induced tourism disasterpportunity. A helpful tourism pitch for DC under federal control Here's your new pitch to tourists: Have you ever wanted to walk through a historic city filled with armed soldiers who look bored? Are you a World War II buff fascinated with how the Reichstag fire allowed the Nazi Party to consolidate control in Germany? Do you like seeing guns, guns and more guns?!? Then DC is the family-friendly destination for your next vacation! Opinion: Nobody knows what Trump is talking about anymore and no one seems to care Don't listen to 'fake news' reports that make a federal takeover of the DC police force sound scary. The various soldiers just add a new layer to DC's long-standing status as an educational destination rich in American history. It's something we're calling 'The District of Columbia's Live Re-creation of the Authoritarian Experience!' And you'll want to visit soon, because the event has a limited run time – we hope. Take in the sights, all while enjoying America's swift descent into tyranny! Visitors can stroll the National Mall and other famous DC sites under the watchful eyes of uniformed soldiers, FBI agents and other federal authorities, all while appreciating America's slow erosion of civil rights, the government's rampant use of propaganda. and the opportunistic silencing of political critics. Parents will cherish the moments when they can turn to their children and exclaim: 'Careful what you say, kids! They might arrest Mom and Dad and send us to an El Salvadoran prison if they think we sound like enemies of the state!' Wait, this city doesn't look like a lawless wasteland? Oh, the memories you'll create as you witness a city that isn't actually covered in filth and wonder if the current administration is using the nation's capital as a testing ground for an authoritarian takeover of other major American cities. And since the soldiers having their lives upended so they can stand around in a city that has seen a 26% reduction in violent crime won't be all that busy, you and the kids can ask them questions like 'Why are you doing this?' and 'Did you know you have the right to refuse an illegal order?' and 'Why did you arrest that labradoodle, he was just peeing?' Learning about authoritarianism has never been this fun! The Live Re-creation of the Authoritarian Experience will also feature an array of informational sidewalk booths throughout the city, aimed at helping visitors understand everything from why their skin color makes them look deportable to how they can better pay homage to President Donald Trump. (MAGA merchandise will be sold at every booth, and a minimum $100 purchase is mandatory for each family!) So clear some dates on your calendar and book a trip to beautiful Washington, DC. You know our motto: 'Nothing says American freedom like an armed federal takeover based on a transparent lie!' Follow USA TODAY columnist Rex Huppke on Bluesky at @ and on Facebook at

House Democrat: ‘Pretty clear' Trump ‘wants his own domestic police force'

Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.) said Tuesday that it is 'pretty clear' President Trump 'wants his own domestic police force' after the president took control of Washington's Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). 'Look, this president is trampling on basic freedoms of the American people to a degree we — I don't think we've ever seen,' Smith said on CNN. 'You see that with what the ICE agents are doing, in terms of picking people up off the streets with no evidence, no due process, locking people up.' 'This is happening all across the country,' the Evergreen State Democrat added. 'Look, it's pretty clear the president wants his own domestic police force, and step by step, he's trying to create it, and we should be deeply alarmed by that, regardless of how you feel about crime in Washington, D.C., or any other city.' Trump on Monday announced he was taking federal control of D.C.'s police department and deploying the National Guard in the city in an attempt to fight crime. 'Our capital city has been overtaken by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals, roving mobs of wild youth, drugged-out maniacs and homeless people, and we're not going to let it happen anymore. We're not going to take it,' the president said. Trump took over the MPD via the District of Columbia's Home Rule Act's Section 740. Congress passed the act in the 1970s to give D.C. control over its local affairs. The president's recent moves in the District have drawn harsh blowback from Democrats, with Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), whose state borders the nation's capital, saying in a thread on the social platform X Monday that 'Trump's raw authoritarian power grab in DC is part of a growing national crisis.' 'He's playing dictator in our nation's capital as a dress rehearsal as he pushes democracy to the brink. This assault on freedom is exactly why we've fought for DC statehood & to give DC control of its National Guard,' Van Hollen added. 'And by the way, Trump couldn't care less about safety in DC or the people of DC. If he did, he wouldn't have blocked DC from spending $1 billion of its OWN money to fund its OWN police department, schools and more,' he continued.
