Soshanguve's Mothiba embraces being second-oldest player at Basketball Africa

TimesLIVE20-05-2025
His teammates call him 'Bra Neo' or 'Grootman', terms relating to him being a big brother and also as a sign of respect.
At the age of 43, Made By Ball (MBB) player Neo Mothiba is a testament to the saying that dreams delayed are not dreams denied.
The Soshanguve basketball star is still going strong and is not planning to stop playing any time soon — as long as his legs and body can still keep up with the pace of the game, he says.
His peers, with whom he started his career way back in the early 2000s, are either retired, coaching or focusing on their daily jobs. But Mothiba is still adding more stripes to his impressive hooping career.

He recently made his debut for Johannesburg's MBB in the continent's biggest competition, the Basketball Africa League in the Nile Conference, which is ongoing in Rwanda. That made him the second-oldest player in the current BAL edition after Radhouane Slimane, 44, of Tunisia's Union Sportive Monastir, commonly known as US Monastir.
'It is a testament to the amount of work you constantly put in, I don't know how he feels [Slimane],' Mothiba said. 'I would have loved to play earlier in the BAL, but the opportunity has come. To be playing at my age and be playing with slightly younger guys means that anyone can do it.'
With the kind of experience that comes with being around the South African basketball scene for almost three decades, it comes as no surprise that he is part of MBB's leadership group, which Mothiba embraces.

'The presence with the team is with my leadership style, some of the guys gravitate to me whenever they need advice, be it basketball or personal,' Mothiba said.
His basketball CV is unmatched in the country, and he also helps fight social ills in his community through his company, Beyond the Arc, which focuses on youth development through basketball.
Mothiba is a former SA national team captain and has made appearances in the 2005, 2007 and 2009 African Championships, as well as the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
At club level, he has had stints for Pretoria Heat, Egoli Magic, Jozi Nuggets, Soweto Panthers and Tshwane Suns. He had the luxury of watching his current employers grow through the ranks of SA Basketball.
MBB have progressed from a social club to a professional powerhouse. Now, together with MBB, which Mothiba joined in 2024, he is attempting to help his team qualify for the BAL playoffs in South Africa in June.
As for his teammates, he has pressured them to deliver in the Nile Conference in Kigali so that they return to SA to compete in the playoffs on home soil. The SA team need to win two or three of their remaining games and construct a superior points difference.
'We wouldn't be human if we didn't think about that,' Mothiba said.
'Of course, it's being talked about within the camp, but the coaches try to make sure we don't think ahead and that we focus on the task at hand — making it through the Nile Conference.'

Cardoso's true colours emerging at Sundowns

Cardoso's entry into the Premier Soccer League last season could hardly have been more understated. Jose Mourinho exploded onto the English football scene in 2004 with his brash charisma and unforgettable 'Special One' declaration. In stark contrast, his Portuguese countryman Miguel Cardoso's arrival at Mamelodi Sundowns last season could hardly have been more understated. Cardoso started quietly The Portuguese tactician slipped into South African football quietly, giving the impression of a man unwilling to ruffle feathers. At first, he appeared reserved, almost timid, as though he were walking across a minefield, and wary of saying anything controversial. ALSO READ: Sundowns leave it late to sink Magesi His press conferences often felt repetitive, with the same phrases rolled out time and again. For much of last season, Cardoso seemed to be suppressing his personality, and it was uninspiring, but this campaign, something has shifted. The quirky, candid side of Cardoso is beginning to emerge, and frankly, it is refreshing. No longer does he appear content to play the safe game. Instead, he has started to show his true colours, and his press engagements now carry an edge that was sorely missing before. Frustration has undoubtedly played a role. The uncertainty surrounding Lucas Ribeiro's future, coupled with the situation around want-away defender Khuliso Mudau, has left his squad unsettled. That irritation has bubbled into his press conferences, where he has abandoned the bland and PR-driven responses in favour of blunt honesty. ALSO READ: From Brighton to Vietnam: Is Percy Tau still worth a place in Bafana? His handling of questions around Matías Esquivel's departure was a prime example. Instead of toeing the club line, Cardoso pointedly reminded everyone that the Argentine was a Rulani Mokwena signing, something that was unnecessary from a club representative but irresistible for headline writers. In truth, this is Cardoso signalling a clean-up. The exits of Thembinkosi Lorch, despite his stellar spell at Wydad Casablanca, as well as Rushine de Reuck and Neo Maema, all point towards a coach reshaping the squad in his own image. There's no other way to say this but Cardoso wants it known that this is now his Sundowns, not Mokwena's. A full-blown eruption looms His willingness to criticise publicly has also grown. After the 1-1 draw against Chippa United and the stalemate away to Orlando Pirates, he came close to calling out individual errors of his players. This was something he avoided last season. The 53-year-old's patience is wearing thin. It feels only a matter of time before a full-blown eruption if results go against him, particularly in the looming MTN8 semi-final second leg against Pirates. And perhaps that's exactly what the PSL needs, an unfiltered, unapologetic and unafraid Cardoso. Supporters and journalists alike crave authenticity, and in a cynical way, maybe now would be the perfect time to ask him to explain why he benched Themba Zwane in last season's two-legged CAF Champions League final. ALSO READ: Pirates coach unhappy with second half display against Stellies Perhaps this time, he would give a straight answer. Whatever the case is, buckle up. Cardoso, the once-reserved tactician, has finally arrived, and the big question now is, what on earth will he say next?

Ribeiro wants his contract with Sundowns terminated, sends request to Fifa for intervention

Brazilian striker Lucas Ribeiro has taken his club Mamelodi Sundowns to the Fifa Football Tribunal in his quest to have his contract terminated with the Tshwane giants. The South African Footballer of the Season, who has not played for Sundowns since the 2025-2026 season started, has had offers from the end of last season. He finished as South Africa's top goal scorer and was voted Players' Player of the Season after winning the Betway Premiership with Sundowns for a second time in succession. 'I believe I have just cause to terminate my contract with Mamelodi Sundowns FC, which I will explain before the Fifa Football Tribunal,' Ribeiro was quoted in South African media as saying on Thursday. 'However, in any event, after the Diarra ruling by the Court of Justice of the EU, there is no doubt the dispute between me and my former club will not prevent me from continuing my career with peace of mind: following its own regulations (as amended in light of the Diarra judgment), Fifa will see to it that the international transfer certificate be immediately delivered upon request by my future employer. 'I have received expressions of interest from various clubs, including some in the EU, and I will now consider what is best for the future of my career to make the right choice, the one that will allow me to flourish as a sportsman and try to provide for the future of my family, knowing that a player's career is short and unpredictable,' Ribeiro said.

Ciara and Simone Ashley bring star power to NFL sidelines

Simone Ashley made a striking entrance into American football culture when she attended her first NFL preseason game in New Jersey. The Bridgerton actress brought her signature style to the stadium. Dressed in a cream white two-piece outfit, she blended casual, sophisticated, and daring fashion with ease. The standout feature was the sheer fabric at the hem of both the shirt and skirt, adding a clever twist to an otherwise understated look. Simone was joined by chart-topping singer Ciara, 2022 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover model. Ciara wore a red, white, and blue football jersey emblazoned with her husband Russell Wilson's number, according to Si Lifestyle. The New York Giants clinched a 31-12 win against the New York Jets, making the experience even more memorable for Ashley. The two made more than just a glamorous appearance. Later, they shared a moment of friendship over pasta, echoing classic Lady and the Tramp vibes. This camaraderie is important to Simone Ashley, who has spoken openly about the value she places on her close-knit circle of friends. 'My friends would describe me as clumsy and kind,' she told Harper's Bazaar UK. 'One of my best friends is always like, 'Go sure, you're my Bridget Jones.' I embrace the chaos.' The 30-year-old actress added, 'I love my friends. They are the best things in my life. I always want to be as kind to them as they are to me.' Ciara's inclusion in Simone's close circle excites many fans, who hope the friendship will lead to even more fun moments. One admirer commented, 'Love this duo,' while another joked, 'You're about to meet your husband, Ashley.' With Simone now filming The Devil Wears Prada 2 in New York, it's likely she might appear at more Giants or Jets games soon. The energy, the fashion, and the friendships all promise exciting things ahead. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
