Big-Hearted Guys Who Have...: AB de Villiers Opens Up On South Africas Chances In WTC Final Against Australia

India.com06-06-2025
South Africa great AB de Villiers is quietly confident of his country's chances in the final of the 2025 World Test Championship against Australia, the defending champions and No.1 ranked side in the format.
South Africa and Australia will cross swords in a crucial match on June 11 at the Lord's in London to decide who takes the ICC's coveted mace.
South Africa are aiming for their first ICC trophy in over two decades, while Pat Cummins-led Australia will be looking to retain the mace that they claimed after defeating India in the previous edition of the WTC final at the Oval in June 2023. 'This is a massive moment for South African cricket—a final at the Lord's. The entire nation will be behind our team, and hopefully, we can cross the line.
'I'm excited for the challenge. It's a well-balanced side, and I'm quietly confident we can upset Australia—I say 'upset' because they're clearly the favourites for this ICC World Test Championship Final,' said de Villiers to Star Sports.
The Proteas have enjoyed a golden run of form in ICC events over the past two years. They reached the ICC Men's World Cup semifinal, the ICC Champions Trophy semifinal, the ICC Men's T20 World Cup final, and now the ICC WTC final.
The former power-hitter admitted that the Aussies are a 'well-oiled machine' but believes the Proteas enter the clash in form and with something to prove. 'Australia are a very experienced, well-oiled machine of a team. It won't be easy for South Africa. But I'm quietly confident because we're going there with many in-form players and big-hearted guys who have something to prove on this stage.'
Former Australia batter Aaron Finch also analysed the matchup and pointed out that both teams have a highly experienced bowling attack, and the game will ultimately come down to who settles under the conditions quicker.
"Certainly, there's a challenge with teams lacking extensive Test cricket preparation. But overall, both squads—particularly their bowling attacks—are highly experienced. In many ways, coming in fresh could benefit both sides. Ultimately, it may come down to which team settles quicker in the Test match,' said Finch to Star Sports.

South Africa All-Rounder Reported For Suspect Bowling Action After Just 2 International Matches

South Africa's spin bowling all-rounder Prenelan Subrayen has been reported for a suspect bowling action after the conclusion of the first ODI against Australia in Cairns on Tuesday. The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday said that "the match officials' report cited concerns about the legality of the 31-year-old's bowling action." ICC confirmed that Subrayen will undergo an Independent Assessment of his bowling action at an ICC Accredited Testing facility to determine the legality of his bowling action. Subrayen, with his off-spin, returned with figures of 1/46 in his 10-over spell. His sole scalp was of unrelenting swashbuckler Travis Head, and he played his part in setting up South Africa's imposing 98-run victory. The series opener marked Subrayen's ODI debut two months after he earned his maiden Test cap against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. A player is allowed to extend their elbow by an amount of 15 degrees between their arm reaching the horizontal and the ball being released. According to ESPNcricinfo, this isn't the first instance of Subrayen finding himself under scrutiny for his bowling action. In December 2012, Cricket South Africa (CSA) placed him under rehabilitation when his action was deemed illegal after two separate independent tests. He resumed his bowling in January 2013 after undergoing remedial work and re-testing. During the Champions League T20 tournament in India in 2014, Subrayen was reported. In November 2015, he was reported once again for his bowling action and was eventually suspended after his arm was found to exceed 15 degrees. In Jnauary 2016, he failed the re-assessment test and finally gained clearance at the CSA's High Performance Centre in March 2016. It is yet to be seen if South Africa will continue with Subrayen in the remaining two fixtures. The second ODI will be played on August 22, and the series, as well as South Africa's white-ball tour of Australia, will conclude on August 24 in Mackay.

ICC Rankings: Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma continue as No. 1 batters in ODIs and T20Is

India internationals Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma retained their spots as No. 1 batters in One-Day Internationals and Twenty-20 Internationals respectively after the latest ICC rankings were released on Wednesday. Amongst the batters in ODIs, Gill continues to top the list with 784 points, with Shreyas Iyer being the other Indian in the top 10 at sixth position. Meanwhile in the shortest format, Abhishek and Tilak Varma remained on the top two places with India skipper Suryakumar Yadav in the sixth spot and Yashasvi Jaiswal in 10th position.
