Madonna Reveals Why Raising Malawi Brought Her 'So Much Closer' to Her Kids as Charity Launches New Initiative (Exclusive)
Madonna's family — and famous friends — are helping her give back.
On March 11, the queen of pop hosted an event to raise money and awareness for her charity, Raising Malawi, which aims to improve the lives of children in the African nation at the Mercy James Centre, the country's only pediatric hospital.
A-listers including Amy Schumer, Chris Rock and Diane Von Furstenberg were on hand as the organization unveiled a new initiative, allowing supporters to become Raising Malawi Partners. Partners can contribute any amount of money monthly to provide life-changing medical care at the Mercy James Centre, while receiving exclusive access to regular updates on the nonprofit's work and behind-the-scenes video content, as well as the chance to win exclusive merchandise and experiences. (Click here for more on Raising Malawi Partners.)
By becoming partners, individuals can expect 'having up-to-date information and saving children's lives,' Madonna, 66, tells PEOPLE exclusively.
Since she launched Raising Malawi in 2006, Madonna has donated millions of dollars to improve the lives of children in the African nation. In 2008, the pop icon released I Am Because We Are, a documentary chronicling the plight of the Malawi people. Then in 2017, she opened the Mercy James Centre, the first pediatric hospital in the country.
Throughout her nearly 20 years of work in Malawi, Madonna is proudest of 'the making of the I Am Because We Are documentary because it brought so much awareness and support to the AIDS crisis that was happening at the time,' she tells PEOPLE, 'and building the Mercy James pediatric hospital.'
The hospital is named after Madonna's daughter, Mercy James, 19, whom she adopted after meeting her during her travels with Raising Malawi; Madonna also adopted son David Banda, 19, and twin daughters Estere and Stella, 12, from Malawi and is mom to daughter Lourdes Leon, 28, and Rocco Ritchie, 24, from previous relationships.
Indeed, Madonna tells PEOPLE the biggest way her work with Raising Malawi has changed her life 'was meeting my four adopted children, who have impacted my life forever.'
And Raising Malawi's mission has become a family affair.
'We are so much closer because we have a common goal, and that is making Malawi a better country for kids to grow up,' Madonna says.
Madonna invited PEOPLE to join her and her family in Malawi for the Mercy James Centre's opening. 'I'm here to save lives," she told PEOPLE in a 2017 cover story at the time. "I don't want to be the outsider that comes in. I want to help them help themselves.'
She added: 'I love when my kids are in Africa. ... Their selfless behavior, compared to the normal complaining in the privileged world we live in, is great to see.'

Dakota Johnson Narrowly Avoids a Nip Slip in Plunging Blazer During 'The Tonight Show' Appearance
Dakota Johnson narrowly prevented a wardrobe malfunctions during an appearance on The Tonight Show The actress wore a black dress with a plunging neckline that revealed her cleavage With an assist from host Jimmy Fallon, Johnson used a tissue to keep herself coveredDakota Johnson is finding new and clever ways to avoid wardrobe malfunctions. On Monday, June 2, the actress narrowly avoided a nip slip on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon as she figured out a way to cover her exposed chest. The 35-year-old actress, who was promoting her upcoming film Materialists, made an entrance in a very cleavage-baring Ferragamo blazer that she admitted was the "wrong outfit" for the occasion. "My eyes are up here," she joked with host Jimmy Fallon. Later on in the interview, Johnson asked Fallon, 50, to tell her if there was a "problem" with her ensemble and jokingly asked anyone if they had a blanket she could use. Fallon swooped in with a tissue that Johnson slipped into the jacket's plunging neckline. "That what I do when I have a cold," she said. Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. The tissue only lasted a few seconds before Johnson passed it back to Fallon who joked, "I"m putting this on eBay this evening." Eventually, Johnson found a better solution after Fallon handed her a cardigan that he actually got from her dad, Don Johnson. "That's what we've been waiting for," he said. ! Johnson found herself in a similar predicament last June after one of her dress straps "fell off" in the middle of her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Like a true pro, Johnson kept her dress in place for the rest of interview without exposing herself. What appeared to kick-off Johnson's streak of late night wardrobe malfunctions was when, during an appearance The Late Late Show with James Corden in 2022, she had a hard time sitting comfortably in another short dress. "It's nothing nobody hasn't already seen," she added, in reference to her nudity in the Fifty Shades franchise. Amid promotion for Materialists, out June 13 and starring Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans, Johnson has been strutting her stuff in a variety of designer looks. For a causal stroll in N.Y.C. on Friday, May 30, she paired a cool off-duty outfit with Ophelia Eve and Sophie Billie jewelry totaling over $100,000 in diamonds. She also stepped out for two stylish girls' night outs with Taylor Swift (their dinner at West Village's Via Carota saw Johnson in a strapless black Ferragamo dress and a Roberto Coin necklace) and Jennifer Lawrence, which the Madame Web star attended in an earth-tone menswear-inspired look with a cherry red purse. Lady Gaga Performs to Record-Breaking Crowd at Rio's Copacabana Beach
Lady Gaga performed to a record-breaking crowd Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, as an estimated 2.5 million people attended the singer's free concert on Copacabana Beach. The gig in Brazil marked the highest attended concert by a female artist in history, according to the singer's reps, eclipsing the 1.6 million people Madonna drew to the same venue last year. More from Rolling Stone Brazil Police Reveal Thwarted Bomb Attack Targeting Lady Gaga's Rio Concert Katy Perry Attends Lady Gaga Concert in Mexico City: 'So Proud of You' Lady Gaga Adds Seven Shows to Mayhem Ball Tour 'Tonight, we're making history … Thank you for making history with me,' Lady Gaga told the crowd, which included over a million Brazilians as well as a reported 500,000 Little Monsters who flew in for the special show, which injected over $100 million into Rio's economy, NPR reported. The record holder for largest concert crowd in history — according to Guinness World Records — remains Rod Stewart, who attracted a crowd of over 4 million to Copacabana Beach on New Year's Eve in 1994. The Copacabana Beach concert marked Lady Gaga's first concert in Brazil since 2012. 'I've missed you so much,' she told an enormous crowd that gathered the previous night just to watch her soundcheck. 'I know that this is not the first show here. I know this is just a rehearsal; it feels like it's the real show.' The concert itself found Gaga replicating the five-act 'gothic opera' that she performed during her headlining sets at Coachella and other Mayhem Ball stops thus far. She'll next travel to Singapore for four shows in that country later this month before the North American arena leg of the Mayhem Ball tour begins in July. Rio de Janeiro's tourism department previously announced plans to continue staging free Copacabana Beach concerts until at least 2028. Kobe and Gigi Bryant's Mural Is Vandalized for the Second Time in a Month. Now the Artist Says He's Moving It
A mural featuring Kobe and Gigi Bryant has been vandalized again The installation, located in Downtown Los Angeles, was targeted with spray paint shortly after its restoration was completed last week The artist, Sloe Motions, now says he will move the tribute to another locationA mural depicting the late Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna has been vandalized for the second time in a span of a month. The mural, located in Downtown Los Angeles, was tagged with white spray paint after it was restored to its pre-vandalized state on Friday, May 30, according to KNBC-TV. The 'Mambas Forever' mural on Main and 14th Street by Los Angeles-based artist Sloe Motions was first vandalized in April. The artist, whose real name is Louie Palsino, told the news station that he will now work to move the installation to another location. Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. 'Everything happens for a reason and we now want to reach out and get this piece done in collaboration with another business or foundation, all donated by us and no charge to the new location,' Palsino said in a statement. 'The project will be better than the last with a proper wall, whether indoor or outdoor, for our community and people to appreciate.' The artwork depicts Kobe in his Lakers uniform kissing his daughter Gigi, who holds a basketball. The words "Mambas Forever" are written next to them. Shortly after the mural was initially vandalized, Palsino established a GoFundMe to help with restoration — and Lakers star Luka Dončić promptly donated the entire $5,000 goal. "Kobe is L.A. He and Gigi mean so much to this city, to the Lakers organization and to me personally," Dončić said in a statement at the time. "I'm happy to do anything to help make sure he and his daughter are honored." For Palsino, the incidents are not only marring his own tribute to the basketball icon, but also he fears they are affecting Bryant's legacy, he told CBS affiliate KCAL-TV. "We didn't want that disrespect to L.A. right here, and for people to see that, especially Vanessa," he said. "Kobe has brought nothing but light and insight and inspiration to the youth."
