UK viewers can finally watch season 2 of 'compelling' Australian thriller

Metro30-06-2025
Following it's 'satisfyingly explosive' first season finale, the second season of Scrublands is now streaming in the UK.
The Australian series was based on the debut novel of the same name by journalist Chris Hammer.
The first season, which was released in 2023, follows journalist Martin Scarsden (Luke Arnold) as he investigates what he initially thinks is a straightforward story about a small town a year on from a tragedy.
But as he digs deeper to discover the details of what actually happened after a priest shot dead five parishioners, Martin faces local residents who do their best to block him from finding out about their secrets.
Running across four episodes, the series was praised by critics and viewers.
The Guardian called it a 'rock-solid addition to the rural noir genre, engaging from the start, all the way to a satisfyingly explosive finale.'
Earlier this year the four new episodes dropped in Australia. This week they were released on BBC iPlayer, with both seasons now available to binge for free.
Scrublands: Silver, which is based on Hammer's second novel of the same name, follows Martin as he tries to uncover the truth behind a crime that 'shatters his own world' when his childhood friend, Jasper, is found brutally murdered.
However, things get incredibly complicated when Martin's partner Mandy Bond (played by Bella Heathcote), then becomes the prime suspect.
It's been teased: 'As Martin races to uncover the truth and clear Mandy's name, he's forced to confront the darker side of his hometown Port Silver and the secrets lurking within his own past. Can he trust Mandy? And can he trust himself?'
The second season also stars Luke Carroll (The Artful Dodger), Debra Lawrance (Please Like Me), David Roberts (Please Like Me), Tasma Walton (The Twelve) and Luke Pegler (Hacksaw Ridge).
Speaking ahead of the release of the first season, Luke spoke about bringing the popular novel to life.
'It is about motive, history and what people are going through. There's tragedy, romance, action, it's got everything and deeper layers than your usual mystery,' he told the Daily Mail Australia.
Before the most recent season he spoke about his character being personally connected to the grisly murder.
'In the first season, Martin was the outsider; he was not too personally connected to this mystery at hand,' he told 9Entertainment. More Trending
'But in Season 2, it's Martin's past coming back to bite him. It's deeply personal.
'He wants to get to the truth because he wants the truth, not because he's gonna write in a story.'
For fans of Scrublands there's also a chance it will return for a third season – with Hammer's third novel in the trilogy, titled Trust, following Mandy's disappearance.

The Dan Daw Show is a cunningly constructed riposte to society's views

**** DANCER Dan Daw is unflinchingly forthright when it comes to describing himself. He openly identifies as an 'Australian, queer, crip artist' - before adding the crucially important factor of 'kink'. On-stage, in The Dan Daw Show, his embrace of 'kink' is foregrounded in duets with KrisX - the able-bodied partner who assumes the dominant presence with Daw readily submissive to his commands. Episodes that would be enacted in private are made public - which might well be challenging for some audiences to watch. Which is exactly Daw's avowed intention. By putting his own disabled body on the line, allowing KrisX (Christopher Owen) to take control - issuing orders, getting hands on, physically manipulating his near-naked body - Daw lets us know (verbally and in projected text) how truly liberating this feels. He talks of being able to let his guard down, relinquish the constraints that society - even more than his disability - imposes on him. At the age of 41, Daw can - by engaging with kink - own his sexuality, his desires, his needs. Whatever else occurs on-stage - the power plays, BDSM, potential suffocation - it's the disabled Daw demanding we recognise him as a sexy, sexual being that veers into awkward territory. Society doesn't expect the disabled to be anything other than objects of condescending pity… Not that anyone would necessarily say that out loud - but Daw has been aware of this dismissive attitude all his life, and The Dan Daw Show is his cunningly constructed riposte. There's sly humour in the writing, and a degree of caring in the physical interactions - KrisX dictates what happens, but he's never aggressively violent towards Daw who has a safe word, 'Spoons' if needed. It's clear that KrisX respects Daw, supports him in his search for joy and pleasure through kink - the closing moments are an uplifting affirmation of Daw visibly coming into his own individuality.

Chris Hughes axed by BBC in shock career setback after controversial Barbie quip

Chris Hughes will not be returning to his presenting role on the BBC's Hundred cricket competition coverage as insiders say they are 'going in a different direction' controversary Former Love Island star Chris Hughes has reportedly been dropped from his presenting duties with BBC Sport, following his stint on Celebrity Big Brother and romance with Dance Moms star JoJo Siwa. ‌ Chris, 33, has become a familiar face with BBC Sport since 2021 on the BBC's Hundred cricket competition coverage. In the latest news, Chris has been snubbed from the line-up, as an insider says they are 'going in a different direction' just days before the league kicks off. ‌ A BBC insider revealed to The Sun: 'Chris has done a good job for four years, but we're going in a different direction. There will be more focus on the cricket this year, rather than promoting the Hundred as an entertainment show.' ‌ The insider added: 'Former England cricketers Alex Hartley and Isa Guha will lead the presenting team, as they know the sport inside out. Rick Edwards from Radio Five Live will be used in the Chris Hughes role.' The Mirror has contacted Chris Hughes' representatives for comment. ‌ The news follows after the BBC reportedly told the reality star he was 'not appropriate' when he made a comment towards female cricketer Maitlan Brown during the BBC's coverage. Chris made the comment when he was interviewing Southern Brave's Australian star and she mentioned a recent team bonding session. ‌ She said: 'We watched Barbie the other night altogether and it was really good team bonding and the group is gelling really well together. That is the key to success I think in tournaments like this, how well and how quickly you can gel as a group.' Chris quickly said in response: 'You're a little Barbie yourself innit, with your blue eyes', to which Maitlan awkwardly laughed. Shortly after the interview, the BBC confirmed that they discussed the incident with Chris, as a spokesperson told Mail Sport: 'We have spoken to Chris and explained that his comment was not appropriate.' It follows after Chris officially confirmed his relationship with JoJo Siwa, just months after meeting on Celebrity Big Brother UK and sparking headlines with their unexpectedly close bond. ‌ Initially describing their connection as a 'soulmate friendship,' the relationship turned romantic in June following a holiday and affectionate social media posts. To mark National Girlfriends Day on August 1, Chris shared a photo on Instagram that showed them cosied up together, with him writing in the caption of the post: "This is my GF." Chris shared a series of posts on Snapchat for the occasion too, including him having uploaded several photos of the pair together. Alongside one of the photos, he wrote in a caption: "National GF day so here so is, my universe."

Bluey episode pulled from screens for completely unexpected reason

Some Bluey fans are unable to watch an episode of the beloved kids show after it was removed from a streaming service. The Australian animated series first hit screens in 2020. It follows the titular character, a Blue Heeler puppy, and her family – Dad Bandit, Mum Chilli and younger sister Bingo. Bluey proved a massive success and two years after premiering Down Under, it was rolled out globally – with episodes streaming on BBC iPlayer and Disney Plus in the UK. However, a recent promotion between BBC Studios and Australian hardware store Bunnings has resulted in an episode now being unable to air. The season 2 episode Hammerbarn follows Bandit being inspired to build a new pizza oven before taking his family to visit their local hardware store, Hammerbarn, for supplies. A few years on, Bunnings has rolled out products connected to the show – including garden gnomes, rugs, hats, socks and tote bags – whilst also hosting in-store scavenger hunts and workshops. This has meant the show's local broadcaster – the Australian Broadcasting Corporation – can no longer air the episode due to the government-funded network being banned from advertising and taking part in commercial partnerships. 'This campaign is a BBC Studios and Bunnings partnership,' an ABC representative said in a statement to Channel Nine. 'As the ABC cannot align with a commercial brand or partnership, the Bluey episode Hammerbarn will temporarily be unavailable on ABC iView while the Bunnings Hammerbarn campaign is live.' They went on to explain that the episode would 'return to ABC iView at a later date'. Although Hammerbarn is still available to stream in the UK and US, Australian viewers have been left frustrated, with one parent saying it was 'silly'. Despite the ABC being bound by regulations, Bunnings spokeswoman Melissa O'Neill told Kidspot the company was disappointed the ABC had chosen to remove the episode, in which the Heeler family visit their local hardware store. 'It's sad to think that they can't enjoy the episode. And particularly given Bluey fans can buy merchandise from a range of retailers and sites both in Australia and overseas,' she said. When the Bluey merch was first released in Bunnings last year it sparked a frenzy, with the garden gnomes 'flying off shelves'. There were four available – Hecuba, Tony, Jeremy and the Meditation gnome – which retailed for $19 (£9.50). More Trending However, after they became so in demand, some started advertising full sets on eBay for as much as $1000 (£500). Following the success of Bluey (it was last year revealed to be the most-streamed show in the US, watched for 55.62 billion minutes on Disney Plus), the Walt Disney Company and BBC Studios announced in December 2024 that the show was being developed into a feature film. Due for release in 2027, creator Joe Brumm will be leading the Ludo Studios production as the writer and director. View More » Bluey is streaming on BBC iPlayer and Disney Plus in the UK.
