"I Don't Eat With Hands": Republican's Indian-Origin Wife Joins Zohran Mamdani Row
Indian-origin author Danielle D'Souza Gill has distanced herself from traditional Indian eating habits after backlash over her husband, Congressman Brandon Gill's remark mocking NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani for eating rice with his hands.
"I did not grow up eating rice with my hands and have always used a fork," she said, responding to social media criticism. "I was born in America. I'm a Christian MAGA patriot. My father's extended family lives in India and they are also Christian and they use forks too. Thank you for your attention to this matter."

Her comments came after her husband, a freshman Congressman from Texas, responded to a video of Mamdani by tweeting, "Civilised people in America don't eat like this. If you refuse to adopt Western customs, go back to the third world."
The 2023 video shows Mamdani, who recently defeated Andrew Cuomo in a surprise Democratic primary, eating rice with his hands while reflecting on how his upbringing in Uganda and South Africa shaped his support for Palestine.
Brandon Gill's comment was swiftly condemned as racist and culturally ignorant, sparking a flood of reactions online.
One user wrote, "Your wife is South Indian. She grew up eating rice with her hands. You're literally marrying into it." This prompted Danielle's direct response, which has since been widely shared.
Internet users also dug out images of Danielle's father, right-wing commentator Dinesh D'Souza, eating with his hands and even old photos of Brandon Gill himself eating pizza and hot dogs.
"How do you eat tacos, french fries, burgers etc? Do you eat Lays with a fork too?" one user wrote in response to Gill.
"Hello Civilised person from America," another added sarcastically, sharing a photo of Dinesh D'Souza eating with his hands.
Zohran Mamdani's rising political profile, punctuated by his Democratic primary victory, has made him a lightning rod for Republican attacks. Some party leaders have questioned his loyalty, with President Donald Trump even threatening to cut federal funding to New York City should Mamdani fail to toe the line as mayor.

Residents of enclave exchange detained in Delhi on suspicion of illegal Bangladesh migrants, later released
About a decade after they chose to come to India after an historic enclave exchange with Bangladesh, eight members of the families of migrant labourers, hailing from Cooch Behar district of West Bengal, were detained in Delhi on suspicion of being illegal Bangladesh nationals. They were detained by the Delhi Police from a brick kiln during a drive against illegal Bangladeshis. They have now been released. 'Our team had detained them from a brick kiln on Monday. After they produced their resident cards issued by the West Bengal government and other relevant documents, they were allowed to leave on Tuesday,' Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest Delhi) Bhisham Singh told The Indian Express. After news of their detention reached Cooch Behar, the district police got in touch with their Delhi counterparts. 'This is happening every day to migrants from West Bengal. The police of different BJP-ruled states and that of Delhi did not even bother to inform the West Bengal government. We, on our own, have made verifications and sent them the requisite documents. In this case, the district administration got in touch with the Delhi police authorities,' chairman of the state's migrant welfare board Samirul Islam told The Indian Express. 'In 2015, Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) and our chief minister (Mamata Banerjee) welcomed them to India after the historic exclave exchange. Now they are being detained as illegal Bangladeshi citizens. And that too in the national capital,' the TMC MP in Rajya Sabha added. Those who were detained by the Delhi Police were identified as Samsul Haque and his brother Rejaul Haque, Md Rayhan Haque, Md Rabiul Haque, and his wife Rashida Begum. Rabiul's three children, aged 15, 10, and 4, were also detained. Their family members said they hailed from Dashiar Chhara, an Indian exclave in Bangladesh. After the enclave exchange, they moved to an apartment complex in Dinhata made exclusively for enclave dwellers who came to India. 'My father, Samsul Haq, and my uncle Rezaul Haq worked in a brick kiln in Delhi. They worked there for the past eight months. Police raided the brick kiln and picked them up. They were taken to the Shalimar Bagh police station. My father (Samsul Haque ) was away in the market. He later went to the police station with all documents relating to residential proof. He, too, was detained,' said Sharmin Khatun, daughter of Samsul Haq, over the phone. 'Our fathers chose to come to India to have a better life. We did not want to lose our homeland. But we never dreamt that we would be branded as illegal Bangladeshis,' said Sharmin. The enclave exchange took place on August 1, 2015. One hundred and eleven 'Indian' enclaves spread over 17,160 acres inside Bangladesh went to Bangladesh, while 51 'Bangladeshi' enclaves occupying 7,110 acres in India became a part of India. The residents of these enclaves were given the option of accepting citizenship of either country. At least 921 residents had then crossed over to the Indian side with much fanfare. The incidents come close to heels for detention of West Bengal residents in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh. Recently, seven residents of West Bengal were detained by Mumbai police and pushed into Bangladesh by the BSF. They were later brought back from Bangladesh after the West Bengal government's intervention. With ENS, Delhi Ravik Bhattacharya is the Chief of Bureau of The Indian Express, Kolkata. Ravindra Chavan appointed state BJP president: At party meeting, Fadnavis, Rijiju take aim at Oppn
Ravindra Chavan was unanimously appointed the new state BJP president at the party's council meeting held in Mumbai on Tuesday. Union Law Minister Kiran Rijiju made the formal announcement amidst thunderous applause. Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, 'Ravindra Chavan's unwavering commitment and loyalty to the organisation earned him the highest post. He is a karyakarta who thinks and works for the organisation 24×7,' adding 'for the BJP the welfare of Maharashtra is supreme'. On the controversy over the three-language policy, he said, 'We are not one to work under anybody' pressure. We have constituted a committee that will take an appropriate decision. Students' interest will be kept in sight and mind.' 'We have always accorded Marathi highest priority. And made Marathi language mandatory,' Fadnavis reiterated. 'We are not against Hindi language. We take pride in all Indian languages. Unfortunately, our opponents distorted facts for politics,' he said. 'Our rivals always raise the false bogey of how Marathi and Mumbai are undermined by the BJP before every elections. They will now start shouting how the government is out to divide Mumbai from Maharashtra. But by now, people have seen the Opposition's gimmicks,' he added. Attacking opposition parties, Fadnavis said, 'During their tenure, sons of the soil were forced to relocate outside Mumbai. Whereas, after the BJP-led government came to power, we provided them homes within Mumbai. We have undertaken projects to transform the face of Mumbai and provide much needed relief to Mumbaikars.' Addressing the gathering, Rijiju said, 'In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the opposition misled people on the threat to the Constitution. But in the Assembly polls, the Maharashtra BJP came back with absolute mandate. The Congress, which talks of the Constitution, is the one which ensured Dr B R Ambedkar defeat in the Lok Sabha polls from Maharashtra.' Chavan expressed his gratitude to the party for the responsibility bestowed on him. 'We will devote our entire energy for organisational expansion keeping the 2029 Assembly polls in sight. Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said, 'Fadnavis and Chavan should work together to make Maharashtra leader in every sector.'
