TAMBUNAN: A total of RM275,000 was distributed to 55 licensed small stall traders in Tambunan through a one-off special aid of RM5,000 each. The assistance was presented by Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey G. Kitingan at the Tambunan District Community Hall. The initiative is part of the 'Bantuan Untukmu' program aimed at easing the operational costs of traders, improving their business infrastructure, and boosting grassroots entrepreneurship. In his speech, Dr Jeffrey expressed pride in the achievements of the Tambunan community, noting that the district has nearly eradicated hardcore poverty. However, he acknowledged that there remain segments of the population living in poverty who require targeted strategic support tailored to current needs. He stressed the importance of continued support and new initiatives to ensure no citizen is left behind in the development process. Dr Jeffrey also reminded the people of Tambunan to stay alert to the various forms of assistance available, not only from the State Government but also from the Federal Government. He emphasized that such aid is not meant to foster dependency but to serve as a stepping stone toward self-reliance and long-term well-being. The federal government, through the Sabah Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food Industries (Maffi), has also intensified efforts in rural development with allocations exceeding RM33.59 million for agri-food projects across Sabah. These projects include the rehabilitation of 534.55 hectares of abandoned paddy fields, the construction of 23 agricultural produce collection centres, and the implementation of integrated cash crop and livestock initiatives. These efforts not only generate economic output but also empower the local agricultural sector. He also highlighted the Agropreneur Muda program, which offers opportunities for youth aged 18 to 45 to become agricultural entrepreneurs. The program provides grants, fertilizer assistance, access to productive land, and technical training. He noted that the initiative is particularly relevant for young people in Tambunan who possess idle land with development potential. He advised the RM5,000 aid recipients to use the funds wisely, whether to improve their stall structures, upgrade business equipment, or increase inventory. The assistance is expected to boost their daily income and stimulate the local economy through higher-quality services and products. Furthermore, he encouraged traders to view the aid as a catalyst toward achieving more stable and sustainable income streams. In closing, he congratulated all recipients and expressed hope that their businesses would continue to grow and benefit their families and communities. He also called on the people of Tambunan to continue supporting his leadership as the Tambunan assemblyman, assuring that all assistance distributed is based on accurate data and genuine community needs. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Federal debt up RM50bil to RM1.3 trillion, says Deputy Finance Minister

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Government's debt has risen to RM1.3 trillion as of March 2025, up from RM1.25 trillion at the end of last year, while total liabilities stood at RM384.6bil compared to RM384.8bil previously, says Lim Hui Ying. The Deputy Finance Minister said the increase was due to the government's need to finance fiscal deficits to support development expenditure (DE). "Government borrowings are utilised prudently to fund strategic development projects such as infrastructure, education, healthcare and social protection programmes," she told the Dewan Rakyat during Question Time on Tuesday (July 29). She was responding to a question from Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham (PH-Beruas) on the government's efforts to manage its rising debt and liabilities. Lim said the government would continue to optimise public spending through subsidy rationalisation, statutory body reforms and a comprehensive review of government expenditure. She said other steps being taken include a gradual fiscal consolidation strategy, broadening the revenue base and ensuring sustainable revenue collection. "Government borrowings are strictly channelled to fund DE projects and programmes that generate long-term benefits for the country and the people. "In addition, we have set a 25% ceiling on government financial guarantees as a share of GDP under the Fiscal Responsibility Act 2023 to ensure our financial exposure remains within manageable levels based on current economic capacity," she added. Lim also noted that the government is prioritising user-pay oriented projects under the 2030 Public-Private Partnership Master Plan to reduce its financial burden. "Other measures include reviewing off-budget project implementation methods and only considering development projects that fall within the scope and ceiling of the Five-Year Malaysia Plans," she said. Lim said strategic initiatives such as the National Energy Transition Roadmap, the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and the Government-Linked Companies Empowerment and Reform Programme, along with policy enhancements like minimum wage adjustments, are expected to stimulate economic activity, strengthen government revenue and reduce reliance on borrowings. "The government is also committed to institutional reforms in support of the national development agenda, including the tabling of the Government Procurement Bill to improve procurement processes and governance. "In addition, a new law on state-owned enterprises is being drafted to enhance corporate governance, boost accountability and optimise performance," she said.

Muar man loses nearly RM500K to investment scam

MUAR: A man here was duped into losing almost half a million ringgit in a bogus online investment scheme promising high returns within months. Muar OCPD Asst Comm Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said the 46-year-old victim lodged a police report on Monday (July 28) after realising he had been scammed out of RM488,740 over two months. 'The victim came across an investment advertisement on social media and clicked on a link which directed him to communicate with an unknown individual via WhatsApp. 'The victim was then instructed to download a mobile application called 'PHG Plus', allegedly for investment purposes,' he said here on Tuesday (July 29). ACP Raiz Mukhliz added that the victim, who works at a furniture factory here, was promised an attractive return of 50% within a week and up to 500% in six months. He said between May 21 and July 21, the victim made 39 transactions totalling RM488,740 into six different bank accounts provided by the suspect. 'However, when he tried to withdraw his so-called profits, which appeared to have reached over RM6mil in the app, he was told to first pay an additional RM600,000 as 'income tax'. 'It was at that point that the victim realised he had been cheated,' he said, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. ACP Raiz Mukhliz urged the public to be vigilant against online investment scams that promise unrealistic returns within a short period. 'Always verify with official sources before making any financial commitments. 'Please follow the Royal Malaysia Police Commercial Crime Investigation Department's social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok for updates on the latest scam tactics,' he added.
