‘Operation Chakra-V': CBI busts transnational scam that posed as tech support to cheat Japanese citizens
NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday said it has busted a cyber crime syndicate by arresting six of its alleged members, who targeted Japanese citizens as their victims.
The six accused were apprehended following searches at 19 locations in Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, officials in the agency said.
They said the accused have been identified as Ashu Singh (Delhi); Kapil Ghakhar (Panipat, Haryana); Rohit Maurya from Ayodhya; and Shubham Jaiswal, Vivek Raj and Adarsh Kumar from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.
'As part of its ongoing efforts to combat cyber-enabled financial crimes under Operation Chakra-V, the CBI on May 28 conducted coordinated searches... the operation culminated in the arrest of six key operatives and the dismantling of two illegal call centres engaged in a sophisticated transnational tech support scam targeting Japanese citizens,' the agency said in an official statement after conducting 'Operation Chakra-V'.

In relief for SP Sanjeev Gandhi, Himachal HC partially allows appeal on order directing CBI probe into HPPCL chief engineer's death
The Himachal Pradesh High Court on Thursday partially allowed the Letters Patent Appeal (LPA) filed by Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjeev Gandhi on a court order handing over the probe into the death of HPPCL Chief Engineer Vimal Negi to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). An LPA is an appeal against a decision of a single judge to another bench of the same court. A division bench of Chief Justice J S Sandhawalia and Justice Ranjan Sharma allowed the appeal only to the extent that it concerned the professional integrity of SP Gandhi and other members of the Special Investigation Team (SIT), stating that their professional standing should not be undermined. The bench clarified that it would not interfere with the core decision of transferring the investigation to the CBI, as this would ensure a fair and effective inquiry. The LPA, filed by SP Gandhi in his personal capacity, contended that the May 23 order by a single-judge bench of Justice Ajay Mohan Goel had heavily relied on the affidavits submitted by Director General of Police (DGP) Atul Verma and Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) Onkar Sharma, which allegedly cast aspersions on his professional integrity. In the appeal, Gandhi argued that he had not been provided with the status report submitted by ACS Sharma. He further claimed that the DGP's status report, which termed the SIT probe as 'questionable', was submitted without the knowledge of the Advocate General's office. Gandhi also maintained that he had not been given sufficient time to present his case before the single bench that passed the order to transfer the probe to the CBI. Advocate Sanjeev Bhushan, appearing on behalf of Gandhi, said, 'Our LPA was partially accepted. It is a relief for us. We had raised concerns about doubts being cast on SP Sanjeev Gandhi's professional integrity. The bench accepted our prayer and directed issuance of notices to the concerned respondents.' In his plea, Gandhi had prayed, '…the LPA kindly be allowed and the impugned judgment dated May 23 be modified to the extent that, instead of handing over the probe to the CBI, it be handed over to a Special Investigation Team constituted by the Hon'ble High Court of Himachal Pradesh, rather than any central agency under the control of the Union of India, in order to avoid any conflict of interest.' The petition further stated, 'It is also prayed that the affidavit filed by the DGP (Atul Verma), being motivated by ulterior intent, be disregarded, and that the scathing observations regarding the investigation—based on said affidavit—be very kindly set aside.' On May 29, the state government led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu directed SP Gandhi, ACS Sharma, and then DGP Verma to proceed on leave. Verma was subsequently retired from police service on May 31. Gandhi is currently on medical leave. In the LPA, Gandhi, who had headed the original SIT probing Negi's death, also mentioned that a 'black diary' recovered during the investigation allegedly contained references to ACS Sharma. Gandhi filed the review petition in his personal capacity, naming the additional chief secretary of HPPCL, the DGP, the CBI, the Union of India, and Vimal Negi's wife, Kiran Negi, as respondents. Meanwhile, the CBI has formally taken over the investigation, registering a fresh FIR at its Delhi headquarters. A four-member CBI SIT is currently in Shimla and has begun recording statements of individuals, including members of the deceased official's family. The review petition stated, 'The LPA appeal is being filed in personal capacity, being aggrieved by the findings and opinions based on the affidavits of respondents, particularly respondent no. 3 (DGP), in the impugned judgment passed by the single judge bench.' The petition further adds, 'The applicant, feeling aggrieved and dissatisfied with the May 23 order, prefers the present appeal on several grounds—most notably that his professional integrity has been tarnished. The findings against SIT-2 are erroneous, based on misrepresented facts, and have caused grave injustice. The judgment arbitrarily presumed suspicion regarding professional conduct, resulting in adverse observations that have seriously damaged the appellant's reputation. There is a well-founded apprehension of being falsely implicated or penalised unless the matter is redressed.'

BJP worker murder case: SC allows Karntaka Congress MLA Kulkarni to place additional documents
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday granted a day's time to Congress' Karnataka MLA and former Minister Vinay Kulkarni to place on record additional documents against the state government's plea for cancellation of his bail in connection with the murder of BJP worker Yogesh Gowda over allegations of witness-tampering. A bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and Satish Chandra Sharma turned down the request of Kulkarni's counsel to adjourn the hearing till next week for bringing certain documents which were filed before the trial court. After much persuasion, the Justice Karol-led Bench adjourned the hearing till Friday, and in the meantime, asked Kulkarni's lawyer to bring on record the additional documents. "It shall be open for the respondent (Vinay Kulkarni) to place on record any document either during the course of the day or hand over the same during the course of the hearing tomorrow," ordered the apex court. Earlier on Wednesday, the Justice Karol-led Bench restrained the trial court from examining any witnesses till further orders, and listed the matter for hearing on June 5. Kulkarni, presently the Chairman of the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board, was accused of conspiring in the murder of BJP Zilla Panchayat member Yogesh Gowda in 2016. He was then a cabinet minister in the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government. Though his name came up, no action was initiated against him. The BJP made it an issue, and former Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa vowed at election rallies that he would send Kulkarni to jail if the BJP was voted to power. Later, the case was handed over to the CBI, and Kulkarni was arrested. He spent more than 9 months in jail and finally obtained bail from the Supreme Court. Last year, the Karnataka High Court had directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to complete the inquiry and questioning of witnesses in the case swiftly. Kulkarni, who is deemed close to Siddaramaiah, was elected from the Dharwad Assembly seat in the 2023 state polls, despite the court banning his entry into the constituency, and his wife and daughter campaigning on his behalf.

The body of Indore based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi was brought to his Sahakar Nagar home on Wednesday. Raghuvanshi's body was brought to his home a little after 5:30. It was received by a large number of people consisting of friends, family, colony residents and even strangers who didn't even know him but were moved by the tragedy. Some people stood on their roofs visibly moved by the unfortunate incident. Raja, who went missing with his wife Sonam on May 23 after leaving a homestay in Nongriat village, was found dead on June 2, some 20 km from where they were last seen, Meghalaya officials confirmed to PTI The couple had arrived in Mawlakhiyat on May 22, parked their rented scooter, and descended over 3,000 steps to visit the famed living root bridges. Their abandoned scooter was found outside a café on May 24, prompting a search operation hindered by heavy rains, officials said to PTI. Raja's friends and family were hoping that the reason why he and his wife couldn't be contacted was because of network issues. After the discovery of his body that theory has been laid to rest while the search for his wife continues. Police have recovered a bloodstained machete believed to have been used in Raja's killing. The search for Sonam continues. Raja's brother suspects a robbery motive in the case Raja's elder brother Sachin Raghuvanshi told PTI, 'We want a CBI inquiry as soon as possible into my brother's murder and daughter-in-law Sonam's disappearance. Otherwise, we will have to stage a sit-in protest.' He also said, 'Along with my brother's wallet, the gold chain and ring he was wearing when he went to Meghalaya for his honeymoon are also missing.'
