School Closed Today: Several districts in UP, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Kerala have declared a school holiday today, July 23.
Several states across India have announced school holidays for today, Wednesday, July 23, due to a mix of religious events, protests, and official mourning. Students in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Kerala will get the day off for different reasons.
North India: Kanwar Yatra Leads To Closures
In Uttar Pradesh, several districts including Noida (Gautam Buddha Nagar), Ghaziabad, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, and nearby areas have announced school closures due to the Kanwar Yatra, which concludes today, July 23. The annual pilgrimage sees lakhs of Lord Shiva devotees carrying Ganga water, leading to heavy traffic and safety concerns across the state.
In Noida, all schools from Classes 1 to 12 have been shut. Online classes were held on July 21 and 22, but physical classes will resume from July 24, according to district authorities. The decision was taken in view of anticipated road congestion and to ensure the safety of students.
Other districts, including Baghpat and Saharanpur, had already closed schools since July 16 as part of precautionary steps during the peak days of the yatra.
Officials have urged parents to follow updates from school administrations and avoid travel near key Kanwar routes due to expected traffic delays.
In Ariyalur district, Tamil Nadu, schools are closed today for Aadi Thiruvathirai, a festival celebrated in honour of Lord Shiva. Students in the region also have holidays on July 24 and July 28, making this a festive week.
Telangana: Student-Led Bandh Shuts Schools
In Telangana, student unions have called a statewide bandh to protest rising fees and delays in scholarship payments. The government has not declared an official holiday, but many schools and junior colleges have chosen to remain closed today to avoid disruptions and ensure safety.
Kerala: Public Holiday After Former CM's Demise
In Kerala, the state government has declared a public holiday today in honour of former Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan, who passed away on July 21. Schools, colleges, and government offices will remain closed. The state is also observing three days of mourning, and the leader's funeral will take place in Alappuzha.
What Parents Should Do?
Since school closures vary by location and reason, parents are advised to check with local school authorities and follow local news for the latest updates. Some areas may have normal classes, while others may be shut due to precautionary reasons or local events.

PM Modi's Chola Tribute, Haridwar Temple Stampede, Maharashtra Welfare Scam & Thailand-Cambodia Clashes

On July 27, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Gangaikonda Cholapuram in Tamil Nadu for the 'Aadi Thiruvathirai' celebrations honoring Rajendra Chola I. He released a commemorative coin for the emperor and announced grand statues for Rajaraja Chola and Rajendra Chola. The PM also launched development projects worth ₹4,800 crore in Thoothukudi, covering infrastructure and clean energy, and paid homage to soldiers on Kargil Vijay Diwas. A tragic stampede at Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar left six dead and many injured. The chaos was reportedly triggered by rumors of an electric current near the temple stairs. Authorities are investigating the incident and have promised compensation to affected families. In a shocking misuse of Maharashtra's welfare scheme meant for women, over 14,000 men fraudulently enrolled and claimed ₹1,500 monthly benefits. The scam cost the state ₹21.44 crore. Payments to ineligible beneficiaries have been halted, and stricter verification measures are under review. Despite U.S. President Donald Trump's intervention, clashes resumed between Thailand and Cambodia over a border dispute. Over 30 have died and more than 200,000 people have been displaced. Both nations accuse each other of ceasefire violations, and tensions remain high. Script & Voiceover: Zeeshan Akhtar Editing: Zeeshan Akhtar

Delhi University to release 2nd round of UG seat allocation on Monday

New Delhi, Jul 27 (PTI) The Delhi University (DU) will announce the second round of undergraduate seat allocations at 5 pm on Monday as it continues with its centralised admission process under the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS-UG) for the 2025-26 academic session. The upcoming list is expected to reflect significant internal reshuffling as more than 43,000 candidates have opted for upgrading their seats after the first round of admissions. According to DU officials, the second list will incorporate these preferences alongside new seat vacancies, paving the way for thousands of students to switch colleges or programmes based on merit and availability. The DU had earlier made 93,166 seat allocations against 71,624 undergraduate seats across 69 colleges and 79 programmes. As of now, 62,565 candidates have confirmed their admission. While 16,126 candidates have chosen to freeze their seats, a large majority – 43,741 — have opted for upgrades. These students are now waiting for the second round, hoping for movement to their preferred colleges or programmes. The upgrade and reordering window for the current round will remain open till 4:59 pm on July 25. Candidates can also check the latest list of vacant seats on DU's admission portal. The CSAS-UG process uses CUET-UG scores along with college and programme preferences, category reservations and other eligibility criteria for allocations. Seats have been allotted across multiple categories, including Unreserved, OBC, EWS, SC, ST, PwBD, Kashmiri Migrants, Sikh Minority, Single Girl Child and Orphan. Meanwhile, performance-based courses, such as Hindustani Music, Karnataka Music, Percussion Music, Physical Education and Fine Arts, will see allocations in the third round. Candidates for these programmes are advised to follow college-specific websites for the trial schedules. The academic session for first-year students is scheduled to commence from August 1. Russia marks Naval Day with July Storm drills, Ukrainian drone attacks

Moscow, Jul 27 (PTI) Russian President Vladimir on Sunday said it is more prudent to have war games and not the naval parades as he lauded the Russian Navy, underlining its 'enormous role" in defending the country's interests, sovereignty and security. Putin was speaking at St Petersburg – home to Russia's naval headquarters Admiralty – to mark Russia's Navy Day. The day was marked with the culmination of 'July Storm' wargames in the seas and oceans instead of customary naval parades. The main naval parade at St Petersburg was cancelled 'due to security issues, which are paramount," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. The 'July Storm' wargames were held amid massive Ukrainian drone attacks on Russia's towns and cities, including the St Petersburg, and closure of local Pulkovo International Airport, which diverted or rescheduled over 100 flights. Addressing the naval personnel, President Putin said that in the 'current situation", referring to Moscow's Special Military Operation in Ukraine and NATO's backing of its Ukrainian proxy, it is more prudent to have war games and not the naval parades. 'The Russian Navy plays an enormous role in defending Russia's interests, sovereignty and security, which is a key task," he said. He also announced that shortly, five Marine Corps brigades will be transformed into divisions, with two of them already this year. As a result, the Navy's strike power and combat capabilities will increase qualitatively. The Russian Defence Ministry in a statement said that the 'exercise" involved over 15,000 naval personnel, more than 150 warships and vessels, 120 aircraft, 950 items of military and special hardware and 10 coastal defence missile systems. According to local authorities, 'dozens of drones" were shot down without causing damage, except one which set ablaze private homes as a result of falling debris in one of the suburbs of St Petersburg.
