Recognition of 124 exam centres in Maharashtra under scanner due to cheating cases

Indian Express05-05-2025

As many as 124 examination centres across Maharashtra are under the scanner as cheating/malpractice cases have been recorded during the Higher Secondary Examination (HSC) conducted in February-March this year.
Before the exams, the state education department had strictly warned that cheating cases would lead to a permanent ban in their recognition as an examination centre.
Out of the 124 centres under scanner, 44 are in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division, 25 in Pune division, 19 in Nagpur division, 11 in Latur, 10 in Amravati, six in Nashik, five in Mumbai, three in Kolhapur Division and one in the Konkan division.
The state had recorded a total of 367 malpractice cases in the HSC exams, of which the maximum cases were reported from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (214). Pune and Nagpur recorded 45 and 33 cases respectively, followed by Latur (29), Amravati (17), Nashik (12), Mumbai (9), Kolhapur (7), and only one case in Konkan.
Director of Primary Education Sharad Gosavi on Monday said cheating cases at all the 124 centres would be scrutinised and their recognition will be permanently banned if the investigation finds merit in doing so.
The state government had included this year's 'Copy Mukt Abhiyaan' initiative in the 100-day programme of the newly elected Mahayuti government in November last year. The programme aims to eliminate cheating and malpractice and promotes integrity among students. This year, in addition to flying squads teams and video surveillance of examination centres, drones were also used to ensure compliance with government directives.

Abitkar attributes delay in loan waiver to Ladki Bahin scheme; no mention in BJP's poll manifesto, says Save

Kolhapur/Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Two ministers on Saturday made contradictory claims on the possibility of a farm loan waiver in Maharashtra as Mahayuti govt is reeling under pressure from politicians like Prahar Janshakti Party president Bachchu Kadu and Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana chief Raju Shetti. Health minister Prakash Abitkar (Shiv Sena) said in Kolhapur that a delay in announcing a loan waiver was because of the financial constraints state is facing on account of Ladki Bahin scheme. "Govt is not deliberately delaying the loan waiver; it is getting delayed," Abitkar, who is also Kolhapur's district guardian minister, said at a gathering of Mahayuti functionaries to discuss the allocation of district planning and development council funds. "Then Ajit Pawar said he was not the one who made the promise. Therefore, we are doubtful about the intentions of govt. As per the assurance to Kadu, a committee to study his demand on farm loan waiver will be set up in 15 days. We demand that the panel be given a timeline to submit its report. " Animal husbandry and dairy development minister Atul Save, however, said BJP's poll manifesto never promised a loan waiver to farmers. "You may check it for yourself. The promises made are being implemented in a phased manner based on priority," the BJP politician said at a press conference in Hingoli. He visited the district as part of an outreach campaign to mark 11 years of the Narendra Modi-led govt at Centre. Reacting to the statement, the legislative council's leader of opposition, Ambadas Danve, said that the power has gone to the head of BJP and its leadership. "The farmers will show them their place," he said. Following Kadu's withdrawal from the hunger strike in Amravati district on Saturday, Shetti announced cancellation of his planned chakka jam (road blockade) across Maharashtra on June 15, which was intended to advocate for a loan waiver. Mahayuti govt to form committee on waiving farm loans after Kadu's hunger strike; opposition slams delay

MUMBAI: The Mahayuti government in Maharashtra has decided to constitute a committee to execute the decision of waiving farm loans. Prahar Sangthan leader and former minister Bacchu Kadu was on a hunger strike for the last seven days to press the demand of farm loan waiver. He said that during the assembly elections, the BJP-led Mahayuti had given the promise of farm loan waiver, but now they are dilly-dallying over it. Kadu said that after his hunger strike, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called him and assured him that farm loans would be waived. However, the Chief Minister requested more time to study the issue, saying the state government is forming a committee. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena minister Uday Samant rushed to Amarawati to break Kadu's hunger strike by offering lime juice and handed over a letter promising the waiver of farm loans. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the government is committed to waiving farm loans, but they need time to study and finalise the matter. He said that the Mahayuti government has already started various welfare schemes for farmers. 'Once we receive the committee report, we will start the farm loan waiver scheme in the state,' said Shinde. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that Kadu will also be part of the proposed farm loan waiver committee. Kadu said that if the Mahayuti government tries to betray the farmers, they will barge into Mantralaya and carry out protests on a large scale. Opposition leaders slammed the Mahayuti government for its announcement of forming a committee to waive farm loans. Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar questioned why the Mahayuti needs to form a committee as they are in power and can make an announcement right away. He said that when the Maha Vikas Aghadi was in power, they waived farmers' loan without any delay and without any terms and conditions. Senior Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat said that farm loans should be waived without any ifs and buts. It should be a complete loan waiver as only then will farmers get real relief, he added.
