Mumbai: Dharavi slum redevelopment plan get CM Devendra Fadnavis' approval; check salient features

India Gazettea day ago

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 30 (ANI): The ambitious Dharavi Redevelopment Project, a unique slum rehabilitation project that aims to provide housing for all, received approval from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis this Wednesday.
The proposed master plan is an attempt to build on the existing characteristics of Dharavi and create a world-class district for Dharavikars and reimagine a new heart for Mumbai. The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) is a unique opportunity to transform the lives and 'live-work' conditions of Dharavikars aiming for a higher quality of life with great infrastructure and public amenities.
As per the Dharavi Master Plan, it is being built on the foundation of three guiding principles: driving economic change through redevelopment, building resilient ecology and infrastructure, and fostering an equitable Dharavi.
It will have an interconnected network of green and public spaces, ranging from large city parks to smaller community playgrounds, ensuring every resident can access vibrant, walkable open areas. This network shall strengthen ecological resilience and enhance Dharavi's quality of life every day.
A large active public open space is being planned in the centre of Dharavi, which will not only serve the recreation needs of the residents but also of Mumbai city at large. This space will be a place where Dharavi and Mumbai residents can come together for celebrations and festivals.
Dharavi shall be transformed into a highly transit-oriented development with seamless multi-modal connectivity, including a new metro corridor through its core. Bus feeder systems, dedicated infrastructure for non-motorised transport, and a fine-grain street network shall enhance last-mile connectivity and promote walkability across all neighbourhoods.
At the heart of Dharavi, a Multi-Modal Transit Hub (MMTH) is planned around the fact that it would have the first-ever facility where inter-city, intra-city, suburban, metro, high-speed, and Airport express trains could be accessed, as well as city buses and other city transport, all at one location.
This integrated hub shall connect Metro, rail, buses, feeder services, and non-motorised transport infrastructure, enabling efficient transfers across all modes in north-south-east-west directions.
Those in transit can come to Dharavi, check in their bags, for flights later in the day, either from Mumbai or Navi Mumbai, and spend the day at various facilities at the MMTH. The MMTH, through underground elevators, escalators, and subways, shall provide 24x7 retail facilities, restaurants, cafes, and shopping, office and Hotel spaces, and Connectivity to Central Avenue.
The Dharavi project will also have accessible social amenities.
A clear hierarchy of social infrastructure shall be embedded within walkable neighbourhood nodes, ensuring every resident is within easy reach of schools, healthcare, and community facilities. These nodes shall also include open spaces and transit access, fulfilling the city's diverse needs. Residents can reach their nearest amenities within 5 to 15 minutes on foot.
A state-of-the-art hospital network will be set up in Dharavi and other MMR locations along with polyclinics, first-aid centres and diagnostic facilities across Dharavi. This will eventually bolster the medical infrastructure in central Mumbai.
The proposed waterfront development and Dharavi promenade - a linear open space is planned to make the river's edge accessible. The promenade shall be a place for people to come and enjoy the walks along the Mithi River and engage visually with the mangrove forest to the north. It will serve as a hangout space for young and old alike and encouraging people to come together, interact and socialise. This will potentially be the longest waterfront in the city after the Queen's Necklace (Marine Drive).
The proposed road network includes widening of existing Development Plan (DP) roads and new networks of approximately 21Km road length. The proposed road network has varying right-of-way (ROW) widths of 9m, 12m, 15m, 18m, 21m, 24m, 27m, and 36m, each serving a specific purpose. A dense road network inside Dharavi will ensure that residents can commute using arterial routes without having to come on the main road.
It ensures a well-connected network that links different neighbourhoods, promoting a balanced and inclusive transportation system. Dharavi's streets will be wide and interlinked every 125 metres.
Besides everything, for the communities of different faiths, iconic religious complexes, which shall be of world-class standards, are being envisaged so that all the inhabitants of Dharavi will have access to a state-of-the-art religious complex catering to all faiths/religions near their place of living. Govt prioritising lower denomination notes and digital transactions: Sitharaman

New Delhi [India], May 31 (ANI): Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Saturday that the priority of the government is to 'make sure' that currency in circulation will be in 'lower denominations' and spreading more awareness for 'doing digital transfers.' Answering a question on the future of Rs 500 currency, Sitharaman said, 'We are making every effort to make sure that currency will be in the lower denominations, used much more than the higher, as the Rs 2000 is almost completely out of circulation, except for possibly 0.02, which is still lying outside. Others have given it to the banks.' 'We need to have more digital awareness built so that people see a benefit in doing digital transfers,' the Union Finance Minister said at the 'National Commemorative Seminar on 60 Years of Pt Deendayal Upadhyaya Integral Humanism Lectures' in the national capital. In recent years, India has witnessed an unparalleled rise in digital transactions, marking a significant milestone in its journey towards becoming a cashless society. At the forefront of India's digital payment revolution is UPI with a record hit of 16.73 billion transactions in December 2024. In addition to this, Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) and FASTag have emerged as pivotal players, making financial transactions faster, more accessible, and secure. As of recent data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI has set a new record by processing over 16.73 billion transactions, with a staggering transaction value of Rs 23.25 lakh crore. This is a notable jump from Rs 21.55 lakh crore in November. In 2024, UPI processed around 172 billion transactions, marking a 46 per cent increase from 117.64 billion in 2023. This rise underscores a broader cultural shift toward financial inclusivity, with UPI being a central pillar. (ANI)

5 years of PM SVANidhi scheme: 4.79 lakh street vendors in Gujarat become self-reliant

Gandhinagar (Gujarat) [India], May 31 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi's PM SVANidhi Scheme has proven to be a boon for street vendors and small businesses across the country, improving their livelihoods and living standards, said a press statement from Gujarat on Saturday. Gujarat has established itself as a leading state in successfully implementing the Prime Minister's ambitious scheme. Launched on June 1, 2020, under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the PM SVANidhi Scheme is a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India. Its objective is to empower street vendors nationwide and integrate them into the formal financial system. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the Gujarat government has implemented the scheme in mission mode, ensuring seamless loan disbursement, digital registration, and continuous support for vendors in urban areas. As it celebrates its fifth anniversary in June 2025, this transformative scheme has become a model of livelihood empowerment, determination, and inclusive economic growth over the past five years. Gujarat has consistently outperformed expectations in the successful implementation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitious PM SVANidhi Scheme. The state achieved its first target of providing loan facilities to 3 lakh beneficiaries by July 2023 on time. Subsequently, it surpassed the second target of reaching 4 lakh beneficiaries by October 2024, securing the second position nationally. In recognition of this excellent performance, the Central Government increased Gujarat's target to providing loans to 5.20 lakh beneficiaries in November 2024. Gujarat has successfully achieved 92.14 per cent of this revised target, and in this regard, it ranks fourth at the national level. So far, a total of 4,79,141 street vendors have benefited from the scheme. They have been provided with working capital loans and various types of support, which have improved their livelihoods and helped them become more economically empowered and stable. The Government of India has supported Gujarat's efforts in the successful implementation of the PM SVANidhi Scheme by providing Rs 30.47 crore in interest subsidies. This scheme is being operated under 100 per cent central funding. This financial assistance has reduced the repayment burden on vendors, enabling more people to participate in the scheme. So far, over 4.79 lakh vendors in Gujarat have received the first loan installment, while 1.71 lakh vendors have received the second installment, and 42,176 vendors have been given the third installment. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the Gujarat government has ensured timely loan distribution and financial inclusion for all street vendors by organizing targeted loan disbursement camps, digital literacy programs, and collaborating with financial institutions. Gujarat has placed a strong emphasis on digital inclusion and financial literacy for street vendors under the PM SVANidhi Scheme. The state regularly conducts digital literacy camps, uses penny drop transactions to familiarize vendors with real-time payment systems, and hosts mega disbursement camps to encourage wider participation and outreach. These initiatives guarantee smooth onboarding and timely delivery of benefits. Resulting street vendors received total Rs. 15.87/- Cr. Cash Back using digital transaction. Additionally, Gujarat's success is supported by robust institutional collaboration with the State Level Bankers' Committee (SLBC) and various financial institutions. Designated loan disbursement days on Fridays and Saturdays ensure quick, predictable access to loans for street vendors. Special drives and onboarding efforts across all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) ensure that no vendor is left behind, facilitating comprehensive coverage and inclusion. Gujarat's remarkable success under the PM SVANidhi Scheme is a shining example of the state's unwavering commitment to street vendors and their empowerment. Through the effective use of digital technologies, promotion of financial inclusion, and active collaboration with various key stakeholders, the Gujarat government has ensured that thousands of street vendors gain access to essential resources and are able to strengthen and grow their businesses. Through these collective efforts, Gujarat has demonstrated that capable governance at the state level can not only transform lives but also empower communities and take strong steps toward economic development from the grassroots.
