Willie Mullins set to overhaul Dan Skelton for British trainers' title on final day of season

Irish Times25-04-2025

Willie Mullins
goes into Saturday's finale to the cross-channel jumps season virtually assured of retaining the British trainers' title at Sandown.
Having bridged a 70-year gap back to Vincent O'Brien by becoming British champion trainer from Ireland in 2024, Mullins once again looks like depriving his rival Dan Skelton on the last day.
General bookmaker odds of 1-7 about the outcome reflect how Saturday's action involves variations on a theme of as-good-as and more-or-less: no one wants to be too definitive just in case but it's just about a done deal.
Even Skelton thinks so, telling Ladbrokes: 'Willie is just going to come over on the last day with wagons full of horses and blow us clean out of the water, I'd have thought.'

It's a galling scenario for the English trainer who looked home and hosed for a first championship victory after

, only for Mullins to upend expectations with a spectacular

result.
Skelton's lead prior to Friday's action was £57,718 (just over €67,500) and it looked thin considering there is almost £700,000 in prize money for Sandown's card. Mullins sends 20 runners divided among five races worth £545,000 in all.

Skelton has nine runners but the task he faces in hanging on is underlined by having a single starter in the big Bet365 Handicap Chase, while Mullins has half the 20-runner field.
Minella Cocooner's victory in the same race a year ago sealed the deal for jump racing's dominant figure and he's back for another crack at it after finishing seventh in the Grand National.
Topweight Grangeclare West was an admirable third at Aintree, while at the other end of the weights is Klarc Kent, runner-up to his stable companion Captain Cody in the Scottish National.
That Paul Townend isn't on any of them, instead opting for the lightly raced novice High Class Hero, reflects how Mullins is throwing plenty at the job of closing out the title.
Nevertheless, still being able to keep most of his A-Team in reserve for Punchestown next week underlines just how dominant the Irish trainer is.
Gaelic Warrior is probably the most high-profile of Mullins's Sandown team in the Oaksey Chase and that enigmatic talent has thrown in too many sub-par efforts in his career to rank towards the absolute top of the Closutton team.
Former dual Champion Chase winner Energumene takes on Jonbon in the Celebration, but his best days look to be in the past. Kitzbuhel blotted his copybook at Aintree with a rank display but could still be the one to beat in the Select Hurdle.
A trio of Mullins horses topped by Bunting line up in the concluding handicap hurdle, although the odds are any whistle will have been blown on the title race by then.

Mullins has long since been assured of a 19th Irish trainers' title when the domestic jumps campaign winds up at Punchestown next week. A haul of almost €4.5 million is clear of Gordon Elliott.
Star chaser Galopin Des Champs is on course to bounce back from defeat in his Cheltenham Gold Cup hat-trick attempt when he lines up in Wednesday's feature.
Galopin has had to settle for the runner-up spot in the last two renewals of the €300,000 Punchestown Gold Cup behind Fastorslow, although that rival is missing this time.
Mullins admitted Punchestown isn't Galopin Des Champs' favourite track, but added: 'I always believe in bringing your Gold Cup horse back to Punchestown. Why should you just keep them in England. There is good prize money, and good racing deserves good horses. I think it's incumbent on people to bring their horses there.'
Grand National hero Nick Rockett features among eight entries left in the big race, which will be an all-Irish contest.
Not so it seems next Friday's Boodles Champion Hurdle, which is set to host the English superstar Constitution Hill.
Having lost his unbeaten record with a spectacular spill at Cheltenham, Nicky Henderson's charge also fell at Aintree. With regular rider Nico de Boinville sidelined through injury, James Bowen will take over in the saddle.
Bowen, whose brother Sean landed Easter Monday's Irish Grand National on Haiti Couleurs, rode Constitution Hill in a gallop on Friday and pending a weekend schooling session the horse will travel to Co Kildare next week.
'He will school either tomorrow or Sunday and barring any hiccups he'll be heading off to the Emerald Isle,' Henderson reported.
It promises to echo the memorable 2013 Punchestown festival when Henderson brought Sprinter Sacre to complete a major festival hat-trick.
Henderson won Punchestown's version of the Champion Hurdle with Buveur D'air in 2019 and 11 years before that through Punjabi.
Constitution Hill's opposition is likely to be topped by State Man who will bid for a hat-trick of wins in the race. He fell at the last in Cheltenham last month when looking to have hurdling's championship in the bag.

As his peers slow down, Mark English is only getting better

It was just after 11pm on Monday when Mark English laced up his shoes, left his hotel in the centre of Hengelo, and set off running around the dark streets of the Dutch city. A few hours before, the Donegal man had become the first Irishman in history to break 1:44 for 800m, clocking 1:43.92 to win at the FBK Games. It was the best run of his career. But his work wasn't done. Past bars where he got cheers from well-oiled locals, along with the odd quizzical look, English churned out a session of 10 x 3 minutes, keen to keep building a foundation for what's coming down the track. Simon Zebo: Leinster's URC final has big role to play in larger Lions picture

Simon Zebo believes Leinster's experience in this Saturday's BKT URC final at Croke Park will have 'huge significance', both for them and for the entire British and Irish Lions squad, later in the summer. Andy Farrell broke the record for representatives from one club when choosing so many boys in blue for the trip Down Under, but the province as a whole has flattered to deceive yet again at the tail end of a campaign. A Champions Cup semi-final loss to Northampton Saints, bad in its own right, was followed by an obvious hangover in URC ties against Glasgow and Scarlets, before signs of an upswing against the Warriors last week. Farrell will be heavily invested as he watches them take on the Bulls in Croke Park. 'For sure, it will definitely help the confidence and the momentum, especially with the Lions core being Irish-heavy. If those lads perform and pick up the URC, that will bring a lot of confidence back and it will bode well for the squad as a whole. 'So it is a pretty important fixture this week,' Zebo agreed. 'There is a lot of pressure on Leinster and, looking down the line at the Lions and form and getting picked, then this match has huge significance, for sure.' The 37-19 defeat of the Scots at the Aviva Stadium last weekend will have come as some relief to the club's supporters. Leinster claimed six tries against Franco Smith's side and were much more comfortable than that scoreline suggests. And yet. Zebo was in Ballsbridge working on the game for Premier Sports and he watched the second-semi-final between the Bulls and the Sharks in full immediately after. He has no doubt that Leinster aren't humming again yet. 'No. I thought Glasgow were poor. I thought Leinster were good without being great. The Bulls will be very different, but I said that after the Scarlets. I felt Leinster did up their game and Glasgow weren't as good as I thought they would be. 'Again, the Bulls will definitely be better. Whether or not [Leinster] win I don't know but I am not convinced yet. I don't think the performances since Northampton from Leinster and those 12 Lions has been back to their best rugby. 'Not yet anyway, but they are all capable of doing that.' The Lions context aside, this is a huge game for Leo Cullen, his team and the organization at large given the recent history of defeats in big knockout games since winning their last trophy – the last ever PRO14 title – in 2021. Zebo agrees that some of their deficiencies have been mental but added that there 'were a couple of little arrogant things through selection' in there too, most obviously when they rotated so heavily for a URC semi-final against Munster two years ago. Backs are clearly against the wall in the capital. Joe McCarthy all but admitted as much when he spoke to RTÉ after the semi-final and put it out there that everyone hated Leinster. The old siege mentality approach. 'They're probably out to prove people wrong and that will probably help. Their previous mentality hasn't worked so I suppose going in with a fresh mindset, maybe Jacques Nienaber might have had some insight there. 'He's a brilliant motivator and gets the players going. I don't like Leinster, just because they're rivals, so you know what I mean? Munster dislike them and they dislike Munster, that's no problem. It's like Barcelona and Real Madrid in soccer. "Of course you don't like your rivals, but I don't think the general public hate Leinster as much as maybe they believe inside camp. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong.' As for his own province, Munster will have just one player on tour in Australia this summer in Tadhg Beirne. It is the province's lowest representation since the 1997 series win in South Africa. Something to think about before the 2029 trip to New Zealand. 'Individual ambitions for the players? Absolutely. I know Craig Casey would be one of those expecting to go on that next Lions tour. With his form he could have potentially gone on this tour. You have Jack Crowley potentially in the same boat. 'You have someone like Calvin Nash who wants to break back onto the international scene and potentially go on a Lions tour. Then people like Alex Kendellen and Tom Ahern: there could potentially be a big swing in representation from this tour to the next.' Simon Zebo teamed up with BoyleSports to preview the British & Irish Lions Tour. BoyleSports will Pay Out Early if either side goes 17 points ahead at any stage.

Ex-Man United midfielder set to sign for Marseille

FORMER MANCHESTER United attacking midfielder Angel Gomes has agreed to join Marseille, the French club announced on Wednesday. The 24-year-old will be a free agent when his contract with fellow French outfit Lille finishes at the end of the month, having joined them from United in 2020. Advertisement He made 10 appearances for boyhood club United before moving to the Ligue 1 side, where he scored 10 goals in 134 outings. Gomes earned the last of his four England international caps in November 2024. The 1993 Champions League winners said on social media they had 'reached an agreement in principle with Angel Gomes regarding the arrival of the English international midfielder at the club', without adding further details about the deal. – © AFP 2025
