Rare Doomsday Fish, Believed To Be A Warning Sign Of Natural Disaster, Spotted In Tamil Nadu

NDTV5 hours ago

An oarfish, also known as the "doomsday fish", was recently caught off the Tamil Nadu coast. This deep-sea creature, rarely seen near the surface, is thought to be a warning of natural disasters, as per an old Japanese belief. So naturally, its sighting off the Indian coast has sparked concern among locals.
A video going viral on social media shows a total of seven men holding the rare sea creature. The fish has a silvery, wavy body with a striking red crest-like fin near its head. "The rarely seen oarfish, which usually are in deep-sea, which is also known as 'Doomsday' fish, is caught in the net in Tamil Nadu," reads the caption of the post.

An oarfish is a slow-moving and lazy fish with very little muscle. It usually just floats gently in the water, often in a vertical position, and feeds on plankton.
According to an old Japanese belief, oarfish is referred to as the doomsday fish because its appearance near the surface is thought to be a warning of natural disasters. In some cases, people have reported seeing oarfish washing ashore before major earthquakes, especially in Japan. They assume it can sense underwater seismic activity and rise to the surface to warn humans. However, this theory has never been confirmed by science.
Oarfish can reach lengths of up to 11 metres. They usually live in deep water and only return to the surface when they are sick, dying or breeding.
Spotting this fish is rare. However, in recent years, it has made quite a few appearances worldwide. Earlier this month, an oarfish washed ashore the Ocean Beach near Strahan in Tasmania. The three-metre-long doomsday fish was discovered by a resident, Sybil Robertson, during a beach walk.
In February, the rare deep-sea creature was again spotted in the shallow waters of Baja California Sur, along Mexico's Pacific Coast.

Vedic maths, Kautilya's Arthashastra to be included in IIIT-A's minor course

Prayagraj: The Indian Institute of Information Technology Allahabad (IIIT A) has introduced a new minor course, 'Indian Knowledge System', in BTech with the aim of connecting India's rich educational and cultural heritage to the higher education system. A minor course in BTech is a focused area of study within a different engineering or non-engineering discipline, taken in addition to the student's major. It allows students to gain additional knowledge and skills in a specific field, complementing their primary BTech degree. Essentially, it's a specialisation within a field outside of the student's main major. The institute has taken the initiative for the session 2025-26 under the new education policy. In the new course, students will study the history of Indian civilization in the third semester, Vedic mathematics in the fourth semester, Kautilya's economics in the fifth semester, Panin's grammar in the sixth semester and linguistics and ancient Indian architecture in the seventh semester. On selecting this minor, students will earn a total of 15 points at the rate of three credit points in each semester. It will start from the third semester and taught until the seventh semester. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The structure of the course will be such that students will be able to learn Vedic mathematics formulas, numerical methods, reasoning and fast calculation techniques. On the other hand, subjects like governance, diplomacy, finance management and strategic thinking will be understood in depth through Kautilya's arthashastra (economics). "In a world where computers are based on mathematical algorithms, the Vedic mathematics course was introduced to speed up calculations. This increases the thinking ability of students. It is our ancient language, and students can learn it easily," said dean academic (IIIT-A), Manish Goswami. Each course is worth a certain number of credit points, which is determined by various criteria including student workload, learning outcomes, and contact hours. Usually, the more work and effort a student puts into a course, the more credits that course has. On passing the course, the student gets full credit points, and on failing, zero.

BIRAC in pact with Miltenyi Biotec India to boost India's capabilities in cell & gene therapy

HYDERABAD: In a move aimed at beefing up India's leadership in cutting-edge biotherapeutics such as cell and gene therapy (CGT), the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) has signed a strategic letter of intent (LOI) with Miltenyi Biotec India Private Limited to boost India's capabilities in CGT through capacity building, advancing clinical research and solving unmet medical needs by local manufacturing of cell therapies. The LOI was signed at the BIO International Convention 2025 that kicked off in Boston this week. Through the partnership, Miltenyi Biotec and BIRAC plan to build national capabilities and upskill scientific talent through structured training and capacity-building programmes for clinicians, researchers, and technicians in CGT manufacturing, analytics, and quality control. The collaboration also aims to expand translational research efforts through co-development of academic and multi-center studies, focusing on next-generation therapies to solve India's unmet medical needs in malignancies, autoimmune diseases and rare diseases. It will also establish point-of-care (PoC) CAR-T centers across India using automated manufacturing platforms such as Miltenyi's CliniMACS Prodigy system to enable cost-effective and scalable access to personalised CGT treatments. The initiative will also promote targeted cell therapy research and support local innovation through the identification and mentoring of Indian startups in line with the 'Make in India' mission by enhancing domestic production of critical and manufacturing components, and supporting the development of national CGT centers of excellence. Commenting on the partnership. Priya Kapoor-Hingorani, managing director, MiltenyiBiotec India, said, 'The potential of India draws us. Our partnership with BIRAC focuses on updating and upskilling scientists to strengthen the country's scientific capabilities and infrastructure. Together, we're exploring how to address current unmet needs in medical science, particularly in areas like autoimmune and rare diseases by enhancing access through innovative mechanisms such as point-of-care CAR-T and graft engineering. ' BIRAC managing director Dr Jitendra Kumar said the LOI was inked with Miltenyi, an MNC that is known for its expertise in CGT, as India is aspiring to become a global leader in this space and to achieve that goal it requires a strong foundation of skilled manpower.
