India gets its first privately funded institute for maths research
MUMBAI: India, said Fields medallist Manjul Bhargava, must fall in love with mathematics again. Not as a "drudgery of formulae" but as an act of "exploration".
Bhargava, Canadian by nationality but of Indian origin, believes classrooms need an overhaul-"experimental, playful," he said, with teachers "trained" to spark curiosity.
Speaking to TOI on the sidelines of the launch of the Lodha Mathematical Sciences Institute (LMSI), he added: "I'm happy with the new textbooks and the changes brought in them.
But they will only show impact in a few years."
On the scientific advisory council of LMSI, Bhargava will lead sessions on arithmetic statistics, its new developments, and future directions. State cabinet minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha called it a school "not for an individual, not for a business, but for the nation that always prioritised knowledge over all and for India that gave so much math to the world."
Entirely devoted to post-doctoral research, LMSI is India's first privately funded mathematics institute, backed by Lodha Foundation with a Rs 20,000 crore endowment. "We realised that for any nation to become strong, we ought to have original thinking and promote innovation," said Abhishek Lodha, CEO and MD of Lodha Developers. The privately funded mathematics research institute in the country is completely free, he added.

Founding director V Kumar Murthy-who earlier led Toronto's Fields Institute-described math as the hidden scaffolding of modern life: the foundation for finance, engineering, and technology. Economist Nachiket Mor, also on the advisory panel, noted that models built in the West often collapse in India because they rarely account for "unique characteristics" like limited liquidity and higher viscosity of adjustment.
"This reality makes it all the more urgent for us to build deep capacity mathematics," he said.
Murthy explained that LMSI would begin not with students but with teachers. Ten senior number theorists have been chosen to seed the effort. As president, Murthy said he plans to travel across the country, meeting mathematicians firsthand and mapping who is doing what. The aim is to build a network where the "brightest minds" are spotted early, handpicked, and nurtured.
By Dec 2026, LMSI will host the first Indian Congress of Mathematicians, showcasing contributions of Indian-origin mathematicians worldwide.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will begin his two-day visit to India on Monday, where he will hold a crucial bilateral meeting with External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar. However, the Chinese Foreign Minister's visit also assumes significance in view of increasing tensions in India-US relations following President Donald Trump doubling tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent, which included an additional penalty of 25 per cent for purchasing Russian oil. India and China are expected to discuss new confidence-building measures for durable peace and tranquillity along their contested border during Wang Yi's visit, which comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's China trip later this month. The Chinese Foreign Minister's visit is largely seen as part of ongoing efforts by the two neighbours to rebuild their relationship after it came under severe strain following the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in 2020. Wang Yi will be in India primarily to hold a fresh round of Special Representatives (SR) dialogue on the boundary question with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. Wang and Doval are the designated special representatives for the boundary talks. The Chinese Foreign Minister will arrive in New Delhi at around 4:15 p.m. on Monday. At 6 p.m., he will meet EAM Jaishankar for bilateral discussions. On Tuesday morning, Wang Yi is scheduled to hold a new round of the Special Representatives (SR) dialogue with NSA Doval at 11 a.m. The meetings could see both sides deliberate on a range of key issues, including the border situation, trade and resumption of flight services. The Chinese Minister will then call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The meeting assumes significance as it is taking place days before PM Modi's planned trip to China to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). Though the two sides disengaged troops from the friction points, they are yet to de-escalate the situation by pulling back the frontline forces from the border. Each side currently has around 50,000 to 60,000 troops along the LAC in the eastern Ladakh region. As per the plan, Prime Minister Modi will visit Japan around August 29 and then travel to the northern Chinese city of Tianjin for the SCO summit. NSA Doval travelled to China in December last year and held the SR talks with Wang Yi, weeks after Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping decided to revive various dialogue mechanisms between the two sides at a meeting in the Russian city of Kazan. The military standoff in eastern Ladakh began in May 2020 and the clashes at the Galwan Valley in June that year resulted in a severe strain in bilateral ties. The decision to revive various dialogue mechanisms was taken at a meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi in Kazan on October 23, 2024. The two sides also initiated several initiatives to rebuild ties, including the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and New Delhi restarting the issuance of tourist visas to Chinese nationals. Both sides are also discussing modalities to resume direct flight services between the two countries. The flight services between the two sides were suspended following the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. It was not restored in view of the border row. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and EAM Jaishankar visited China in the last two months to attend the SCO meetings.

Land acquisition: Thirumangalam water scheme delayed by five months
MADURAI: Trouble with land acquisition has allegedly delayed the Rs 52.54-crore water scheme project of the Thirumangalam Municipality by five months. Commenced on January 1 last year, the project was initially scheduled for completion in July 2025; now, officials from the Water Resources Department expect the project to be over by December this year. Sources said drinking water is being supplied to the 20,000-odd households in Thirumangalam Municipality through two schemes -- Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board's combined water scheme supplying 3.3 MLD from Cauvery river and local sources supplying 2.1 MLD from Vaigai river in Thiruvengadam. 'As we decided to develop our sources from the Vaigai river in Mullipallam, a special scheme was devised at a cost of Rs 52.54 crore, under the Kalaignar Urban Development Fund,' said an official from the Thirumangalam municipality. 'With Mullipallam just 25 kilometres away, the new project has the capacity to supply over 4.3 MLD, which will be plentiful for the next 10 years for the residents of the municipality. We are currently constructing five overhead tanks (OHTs) in the municipality.

Omni bus owners allege illegal tax collection in Tamil Nadu
COIMBATORE: The All Omni Bus Owners and Operators Association alleged on Sunday that transport officers in the state are illegally collecting money from omni bus owners from both Tamil Nadu and other states under the guise of a special tax, despite them already paying the legally mandated road tax. The association's founder, A Pandiyan, stated that a bus with an all-India permit pays a road tax of Rs 90,000 to the central government every three months. Additionally, they pay road tax to their respective state governments based on the number of seats. He said that, according to law, no other taxes are required. Operators are also subjected to long checks at toll gates, causing delays in passenger drop-offs and affecting their business, he said. 'However, officers from the state transport department are collecting money from omni bus owners who are operating inter-state, from other states to Tamil Nadu and vice versa. They are doing so in the name of a special tax. They collect anywhere from `20,000 to `1 lakh, especially on holidays and during festival times,' Pandiyan alleged. Urging Transport Minister SS Sivasankar to intervene and put an end to this illegal practice, the association warned of a larger protest at the state transport department office in Chennai if the issue persists. When contacted, transport and road safety commissioner R Gajalakshmi told TNIE that she would look into this matter.
