Morocco's ONMT Launches Strategic Tourism Plans for Fez, Ouarzazate

Morocco World20-05-2025

Rabat — Morocco's National Tourism Office (ONMT) has unveiled two ambitious tourism revival plans, 'Shining Fez' and 'Rising Ouarzazate,' to boost these historic destinations on the international market.
The office announced this plan as part of its global vision to level up the attractiveness of Morocco's tourism cities and sites.
This time it is 'a strategy to reposition two heritage jewels, Fez and Ouarzazate,' according to ONMT. These plans aim to revitalize these high-potential regions through partnerships with local authorities and tourism operators.
Three-prong approach
Implementation of the revitalization plans focuses on three key strategies, namely building awareness through media coverage and educational tours, strengthening partnerships with travel agencies, and improving air connectivity.
'Shining Fez'
The 'Shining Fez' plan includes several high-impact media and commercial initiatives. TV5 Monde will broadcast a documentary on Fez cuisine from May 11-21, featuring the medina's rich culinary traditions. France 2 will produce 'The Artisans of Morocco,' showing the region's traditional crafts, while M6 will feature the spiritual capital in its 'Minute Voyage' series.
In the UK market, BBC will dedicate an episode of 'Clive Myrie's African Adventure' to Fez. Travel website Travelzoo will create a dedicated Fez page with special offers from partner tour operators running from April 2025 to April 2026.
On the commercial front, two major campaigns with French travel agencies Carrefour Voyages and Havas Voyages will focus on 'gastronomy, local products, and craftsmanship.' Fez will also host a workshop with premium sales platform Voyage Privé and participate in Spain's Travel Connect trade show to connect directly with distributors.
Travel agents will receive training through webinars, online courses, and e-learning modules, including a specific Fez-Meknes module to enhance their knowledge of the destination.
The image strategy includes hosting press trips, influencers, and content creators from the French, German, Italian, and British markets.
'Rising Ouarzazate'
The 'Rising Ouarzazate' plan takes a complementary approach, repositioning the city as an exceptional destination at the crossroads of desert, cinema, and immersive experiences.
ONMT plans to produce audiovisual content in the UK, focusing on Ouarzazate's film history, displaying the region's legendary studios and spectacular landscapes that have served as backdrops for major productions. The region will also sponsor a British film in competition, with special visibility at the UK Film Festival, featuring its natural scenery.
Major European media outlets are involved, including Italian channel RAI 3, which filmed an episode of the program 'GEO' in Ouarzazate, focusing on the relationship between the territory, nomadic culture, and Amazigh traditions. Sky TV's culinary show Gamberorosso will dedicate a special episode to southern Moroccan cuisine in October.
Ouarzazate will host several major events, most notably the Desert Women's Summit in the second half of 2025, bringing together 150 female leaders from around the world to experience the spiritual intensity and inspirational power of the Moroccan desert.
The city will also welcome two major Spanish tourism conventions: CEAV (100 travel agents) in October and IDEMICE for the MICE network, as well as a Frameless event centered on artistic and sensory immersion.
Like Fez, Ouarzazate's plan includes international workshops, online training modules, and press and influencer trips throughout the second half of 2025. Special attention will focus on developing direct connections to these destinations, complementing efforts already made for the summer 2025 season.
With these twin plans, ONMT is sending the message that it's treating each destination as unique, with tailored approaches and local collaboration. Fez and Ouarzazate are set to reclaim their prominence as part of a strategy targeting all of Morocco's tourism territories and destinations.

Backing Morocco's Sahara plan, the UK embraces its «progressive realism» foreign strategy

The UK's recent recognition of Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara marks a significant moment in British diplomacy. In an opinion piece for The Telegraph, Lt Gen Sir Simon Mayall, a retired British Army officer and former Middle East adviser at the Ministry of Defence, called the move «particularly significant in the context of the new Strategic Defence Review». He highlighted it as an example of the UK «seizing the initiative on a diplomatic issue that has been neglected by the international community for nearly half a century». According to Mayall, the recognition is part of what Foreign Secretary David Lammy has described as a strategy of «progressive realism» — a foreign policy approach that seeks to combine pragmatic interests with progressive goals by strengthening ties with «trusted and reliable» partners. «The political tides in Africa are shifting once again», Mayall noted, «and the UK needs to be clear-sighted about who its friends are». Lammy introduced the concept of «progressive realism» in April 2024 as a guiding principle for UK foreign policy under the Labour government. It blends national interest with support for international institutions and free trade. Mayall also emphasized the economic dimension of the UK's support for Morocco, pointing to a £5 billion facility from UK Export Finance to back projects in the country. «Our support for Morocco and its ambitions in the region will unlock huge economic opportunities for British companies», he said. The UK's shift from a neutral stance to formally backing Morocco's autonomy plan was announced on Sunday. It was accompanied by a series of cooperation agreements across various sectors, including trade, health, education — and soon, defense.

Back from Morocco, Lammy confirms UK's endorsement of autonomy plan to Parliament

Following his recent visit to Rabat, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs David Lammy updated the the Parliament on the UK's «deepening partnership with the Kingdom of Morocco» and its new position on the Western Sahara issue. «While in Morocco, I announced the UK's endorsement of Morocco's autonomy proposal as the most credible, viable, and pragmatic basis for a solution to the conflict», Lammy stated, in a message shared, Tuesday, by Ray Collins, Deputy Leader of the House of Lords and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Africa. «In parallel, I welcomed Morocco's willingness, outlined in our joint communiqué, to engage in good faith with all relevant parties and provide further details on what autonomy could entail, with a view to restarting serious negotiations», he added in his address to Parliament. Lammy emphasized that, through this position, the UK government is «advancing regional security, stability and prosperity by supporting efforts to resolve the longstanding Western Sahara conflict, which has persisted for nearly five decades». The conflict, he noted, has «undermined regional stability and hindered economic development, particularly affecting Sahrawi refugees residing in the Tindouf camps». Referring to a «renewed international engagement», Lammy said this creates «a window of opportunity to shift the dial on this intractable conflict and support the parties and the UN in reaching a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution». He also stressed that by backing the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco in 2007, his office is «redoubling its efforts to help realise this opportunity». A UK-Morocco trade partnership In addition to the Western Sahara issue, Lammy's visit also focused on strengthening the UK-Morocco partnership across a range of shared priorities. He noted that the bilateral trade relationship between London and Rabat exceeds £4 billion annually—a partnership that should be further reinforced to «advance mutual goals in security, prosperity, and sustainable development—delivering tangible benefits for British businesses and supporting the Government's Plan for Change to boost economic growth». Lammy highlighted a series of partnership agreements signed during his Sunday visit, which he said are opening «opportunities for UK businesses across a range of sectors, including access to public procurement markets in Morocco, where opportunities are estimated to be worth approximately £33 billion over the next three years». He also referred to a government-to-government partnership signed with Morocco that allows British companies to compete for contracts linked to Morocco's infrastructure development ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Additionally, he announced enhanced cooperation on migration and counterterrorism, as well as joint initiatives to address water scarcity and climate change.

David Lammy Hammers Home Morocco's Autonomy Plan Before UK Parliament

Doha – British Foreign Minister David Lammy forcefully confirmed the United Kingdom's support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan during today's address to the House of Commons, declaring it 'the most credible, viable and pragmatic basis for resolving the conflict' over the Western Sahara. This parliamentary statement reinforced his groundbreaking position already announced during his weekend visit to Rabat. 'During my visit to Morocco, I announced the United Kingdom's support for the autonomy proposal presented by Morocco, considering it the most credible, viable and pragmatic basis for a solution to the conflict,' Lammy proclaimed to members of the lower house of Westminster Parliament. The British diplomatic chief spotlighted the urgent need for resolution as the dispute approaches a half-century milestone. 'As we approach the 50th anniversary of the conflict, and with renewed international engagement, an opportunity presents itself to move things forward in this conflict,' he asserted. During his historic visit to Morocco on Sunday – the first by a British foreign minister since 2011 – Lammy had already shattered diplomatic ambiguity by explicitly backing Morocco's position. According to the Financial Times, this represented 'a pure and simple recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara,' marking a pragmatic decision aligned with Britain's 'progressive realism' in foreign policy. During his address to MPs, Lammy stressed the strategic importance London places on strengthening ties with Morocco, characterizing the two kingdoms as 'longstanding partners collaborating on various common priorities.' He noted that Rabat and London are actively elevating their partnership 'to promote our common goals in security, prosperity, and sustainable development.' Britain dismantles Algeria's separatist theatre This unequivocal British stance deals a devastating blow to the Polisario Front's fabricated separatist agenda and brutally exposes the futility of Algeria's decades-long, hostile crusade to sabotage Morocco's sovereignty. The backing from a permanent UN Security Council member further isolates the increasingly desperate Algerian regime, which has stubbornly clung to its failed proxy war strategy. Algeria's reaction betrayed its diplomatic panic. The regime hastily issued a flimsy statement claiming to have 'taken note' of Britain's new position while 'regretting the UK's choice to support Morocco's Autonomy Plan.' In a transparent attempt to distort reality, Algerian officials brazenly misrepresented Lammy's statements, falsely claiming he had made declarations supporting self-determination during the press conference – a blatant fabrication contradicted by the official Moroccan-British joint press statement. The Algerian foreign ministry's desperate attempt to denounce the 'emptiness' of Morocco's autonomy initiative rings hollow, as the plan now enjoys support from a commanding majority of the international community. Global momentum crushes Polisario delusion Algeria's obstinate refusal to recognize diplomatic reality shows its growing isolation as a destabilizing force, desperately throwing billions in gas revenues at a hollow, outdated fantasy – an antiquated separatist chimera disconnected from 21st-century geopolitical realities and one that no longer holds any weight. As if the UK's endorsement weren't enough, Kenya's recent shift in favor of Morocco's position delivers yet another seismic diplomatic strike against Algeria in a remarkably short timeframe. This accelerating avalanche of international support against the separatist agenda confirms the growing global consensus that Morocco's Autonomy Plan is the only credible and forward-looking solution. London's position aligns perfectly with its economic interests in the region. Trade between the two kingdoms has exploded, with commercial exchanges reaching £3.8 billion and growing from MAD 22.9 billion in 2022 to a staggering MAD 48.5 billion in 2024. Morocco's exports to Britain have nearly tripled since their association agreement took effect. During the 5th Strategic Dialogue session held during Lammy's visit to Rabat, both sides signed several memorandums of understanding covering priority areas including migration, counter-terrorism, education, climate change, health, and infrastructure development. Lammy reaffirmed both countries' commitment to an international order based on fundamental UN Charter principles, emphasizing 'the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States.' Beyond diplomatic support, the UK has committed substantial financial firepower to the region. UK Export Finance has received the green light to back projects directly in Western Sahara, mobilizing £5 billion to support economic initiatives throughout Morocco, including its southern provinces. The UK also views Morocco as a crucial energy partner through the ambitious X-Links mega-project, designed to supply 7 million British households with clean solar electricity from a Guelmim power plant via a massive 3,800 km undersea cable. With France, Spain, and now the United Kingdom – all European powers historically entangled in the region – firmly backing Morocco's position, the Polisario Front's separatist delusion continues to crumble while Algeria's misguided regional hegemonic ambitions face catastrophic collapse.
