
6 rules to maintain safe sex this winter
Young women already know everything they need to know about their bodies, sexual health and reproduction, right?
The reality, however, is very different.
'You'd be surprised at how little knowledge women have about their sexual health,' says Pamela Makhetha, a health practitioner who works at a sexual health clinic in Johannesburg.
'I deal with women, daily, who don't fully understand that they have the right to make decisions that affect their sexual health. It is probably one of the last social taboos; nobody is talking about it but everybody who is sexually active is affected by it,' she says.
Let's all agree on one thing: the person who is responsible for your sexual health, is you.

Couples counsellor Sizakele Zondi says, 'Women often give up power when it comes to their sexuality and health. I want every woman to understand that you cannot trust anyone with your sexual health, even if he's your husband and a man of God. So you must always think of yourself and your well-being first, and make decisions based on that.'
The rules
To help you make the best decisions for your sexual health, we compiled basic safe sex rules to observe:
1. Insist on mandatory testing
Mandatory means that it's not negotiable, even when you've been dating for a while, and he doesn't want to use condoms anymore. It's not enough for your partner, however lovely he or she is, to assure you their sexual health is in order.
Get tested together, so your relationship is transparent and you both get information from a professional. Make sure the tests include screening for STIs.
'The operative word is 'before' you engage in unprotected sex. The moment you succumb to passion or pressure and have unprotected sex with someone you haven't tested with, you've definitely put your health at risk,' Makhetha says.
2. Take a stand on pregnancy
Falling pregnant 'by mistake' is one of society's most common life mistakes. Young people, in particular, often believe 'it won't happen to me'. The good news is that it doesn't have to.
'Falling pregnant and keeping the baby is one of the biggest decisions you'll make in your life. So, make sure it's a decision and not a fate that's thrust on you by poor decision-making,' Makhetha warns.
'If you don't want to be pregnant, make sure you've made a plan for that. Whether that means using condoms every single time or being on contraception and having sex with a partner you've tested with, you have to make a decision.
'I often deal with women that have unplanned pregnancies and surprise STIs at the same time. It is stressful and completely unnecessary, and you have the power to avoid that,' she adds.
Keep in mind that the pull-out method is not a smart plan for staying on the right side of your goals; it's a roll of the dice and if it really worked, at least a third of the population wouldn't exist.
3. Own your reproductive health
If you are having sex, a visit to a gynaecologist needs to be a priority. 'Sexual health isn't just about the actual act of sex, it's also about making sure you are in good health,' Makhetha says.
Annual gynae visits can help detect cancer, inflammation and infection of your reproductive organs — some conditions and complications are not easy to detect.
'Your doctor will do a pap smear but also help you with any other complications or conditions you might have,' Makhetha adds.
If anything feels 'off' down there, get an expert to check it out – the sooner, the better.
4. Don't add any extras
It's not uncommon for women to swap sexual tips on pleasing their partners. That's not a bad thing, in itself, but sometimes some of the advice is just plain dodgy.
'Do not put things into your vagina in an effort to better please your partner,' Makhetha advises.
'Women put things like snuff, tree bark, herbs and other weird objects into their vaginas, all in an effort to be 'mnandi'. Your vagina already has everything it needs to make sex pleasurable. No amount of eating cinnamon and yoghurt is going to change how you feel to your partner. So stop trying so hard.
'If he complains, there is a big chance that he's the problem, and you need to move on to a partner who'll appreciate you,' she says.
5. Be mentally and emotionally ready
As much as sex is seen as a physical act, there are many other aspects at play in our sexual relationships.
'When you have sex that you are not ready for, you make a decision against yourself, because you're trying to please someone else. I strongly advise against it.
'Your feelings around your sexual relationships are important and, again, the onus is on you to make sure you are taken care of. That can lead to uncomfortable conversations, but that's better than compromising yourself.
Sex is meant to be pleasurable. And that state includes your mind, body and soul, so always ensure that you don't take that part of your health for granted,' Zondi says.
6. Screen your lovers
No one has the right to tell you how to pick your lovers. The responsibility is yours alone and it is one you have to take seriously.
'The person you choose to have sexual interactions with has to be picked with a lot of consideration. These are people you are vulnerable with and should your contraception fail, that's someone who might be in your life for good,' Zondi says.
She concludes: 'Lovers can also wreak havoc with your self-esteem, so make sure you choose partners that affirm who you are, and not those who cause harm. I often tell my clients that being fussy is good when it comes to this.
'If you are choosing decent partners, sex will be healthy for your mental health but when you choose the wrong ones, the damage to your mental and emotional state can be very harmful.'

'It's a lifesaver': Making solar power affordable in South Africa
South African Mark Moodley believes that installing a domestic solar power system has helped keep his 81-year-old mother alive. She spent three weeks in intensive care last year, and now back at home in Benoni, east of Johannesburg, she needs an oxygen concentrator to help her breathe. But the country's erratic electricity supply meant could not be relied on. "There were days we'd be without power for six hours. I had to use a car battery to run her oxygen tank, but that didn't last long and you'd have to sit with her with her arms raised to try and get oxygen into her lungs," Mr Moodley tells the BBC. "Sometimes we had to rush her to hospital when that didn't work. It was scary." Back then, doctors told the family she might not have long to live. But a steady power supply has given them more time together. "It's been a lifesaver. I don't have to check on her constantly through the night. I know her oxygen tank has power no matter what," he says, voice trembling. Despite recent improvements in South Africa's power grid, there are still outages. Having a steady electricity supply has become a privilege in the country, which has endured nearly 15 years of "load-shedding" - scheduled nationwide blackouts introduced to ease pressure on the fragile infrastructure. As well as endangering some lives, the crisis has damaged economic growth and contributed to job losses. South Africa is heavily reliant on highly polluting coal for its power - it accounts for around 80% of all electricity generated. But in recent years it has loosened restrictions on small-scale solar generation and created tax incentives for installation. The country is also looking for more investment in renewable energy in order to aid the switch from coal. Domestically, those with financial means have gradually taken their homes and businesses off-grid, investing in solar power systems that require an initial outlay of $14,000- $19,600 (£10,400-£14,500). That price tag means that this option is far out of the reach of most South Africans. Those scraping by cannot take advantage of the country's sunshine and invest in clean, reliable energy. But Mr Moodley was able to turn to a pay-as-you-go scheme that has kept the lights on and the medical equipment working. His electricity bill has dropped by $80 a week - savings he hopes to use to expand what he has and eventually go completely off-grid. The system he uses comes from Wetility, a local start-up founded in 2019 For domestic users, the most basic package costs $60 a month - and crucially no prohibitive up-front payment - making solar power more accessible. The company says it identified a gap in the market - affordable solar solutions tailored to small businesses and low-income households. "South Africa has traditionally had high electricity access - but access means nothing if the power isn't reliable or affordable," says Vincent Maposa, the company's founder and a former energy analyst. "We had to develop products that are both fit-for-purpose and financially accessible." While solar power is not new in South Africa, Wetility's business model includes a mobile-phone style monthly payment plan, allowing customers to spread out the cost. For years, load-shedding has been used as a last-ditch attempt to keep the national grid from total collapse, following decades of mismanagement at state utility Eskom. While blackouts have eased for some urban centres, poorer communities and business people continue to suffer forced cuts as aging infrastructure struggles to meet the growing demand. For some in the townships worries about theft and practicality have also deterred people from getting solar equipment, but Wetility has also designed lightweight, flexible panels that can be fitted on the fragile rooftops common in many of these areas. "We came up with a thin-film panel that sticks onto the roof. If someone tries to peel it off, it tears and becomes valueless. That was important for areas where theft is a concern," says Mr Maposa. "In terms of efficiency, they perform about as well as traditional panels." The energy unit, including an inverter, which converts the power generated by the panels into useable electricity, and a battery that works when the sun is not shining, is secured in a large steel box weighing about 300kg that bolts onto a wall. The team says this reduces the risk of theft and avoids drawing attention in high-crime areas. Shopkeeper Julius Koobetseng recently made the switch to solar that may have saved his small grocery store. In a grey beanie hat and thick blue jacket to ward off the cold in the southern Hemisphere winter, he stacks cans of drink in a brightly lit fridge remembering how the frequent power cuts nearly wrecked his livelihood. "Meat would go off, dairy would spoil. Sometimes we'd be without power for four days," the 43-year-old says. But since March, his shop in Krugersdorp, west of Johannesburg, has been using the pay-as-you-go solar power system to keep the lights and fridges on. Some small business owners have turned to back-up diesel generators but Mr Koobetseng, who has had his shop for the past 13 years, was drawn to the more environmentally friendly option. "Power cuts have badly affected small businesses. I know many in this area that had to shut down because they couldn't keep up with the uncertainty," he says. "We live month-to-month, depending on what the business brings in. If you can't guarantee power, how do you even plan for the future?" Now he does not worry when the power goes out which has been "a huge relief". It costs his business $250 a month but Mr Koobetseng's business has picked up thanks to the reliable power. "People know my shop stays open even when the power's out. Some just come to charge their appliances, but while they're here, they buy things too," he says with a smile. For him, the benefit is not about lowering his electricity bills. It is the consistency. "Solar gave me back control. I can plan my day knowing I'll have power." Ottawa-based organization's pre-budget submission takes aim at women's health funding
An Ottawa-based organization is urging the federal government to allocate millions of dollars in Budget 2025 to address gaps and misinformation in women's health, saying the money will advance women's health care across the country. The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) is a national organization dedicated to advancing women's health and advocating for better health-care policies across the country. In its pre-budget submission, the organization outlined five key recommendations for government officials to consider while drafting Budget 2025, which is expected to drop in the fall. One of those recommendations is a $20 million investment to close data gaps in women's health by creating a National Women's Health Data Dashboard and improve data collection strategies. The SOGC says the dashboard, which should be a standardized and disaggregated database, will provide meaningful insights into key women's health indicators. This includes data on maternal mortality and morbidity, stillbirth and perinatal loss, menopause and endometriosis. This will help patients make informed decisions about their health and also allow health-care providers to provide more responsive, equitable and cost-effective care, the SOGC added. The organization also said the move will also have economic benefits because incomplete data leads to lost productivity and greater costs to the health-care system. Patients often have to foot hefty bills from unnecessary health-care costs. Currently, provinces and territories are responsible for collecting this data and practices may vary widely. 'The federal government must take a leadership role in co-ordinating and standardizing this data collection, as approaches to health data collection across provinces and territories vary widely. Only national leadership can ensure consistency, comparability and the quality needed to build a reliable, actionable and nationally-focused database and dashboard,' the pre-budget submission read. 'Without co-ordinated, federally driven health data infrastructure, Canada will continue to miss emerging health trends, fall short in reducing system costs and fail to support women whose pain and illness limit their ability to fully participate in the economy.' The recommendation comes after Prime Minister Mark Carney made several promises to protect women's rights in Canada throughout his federal election campaign earlier this year. This includes investments to increase data collection to 'help address women's health gaps in Canada,' as well as investments into under-researched areas like postpartum maternal health. But the platform did not provide specific details about how much money will be allocated to this initiative. 'Under a Liberal government, women's rights in Canada will never be compromised. We will protect these rights, and fight for true equity for women — in health, in the workplace, and in their access to fundamental rights,' the 2025 Liberal Party federal election platform reads. The Liberal Party of Canada also pledged to invest into women's sexual and reproductive health care and health research, including those who identify as 2SLGBTQI+. Women's health still under-researched, underfunded Advocates have been talking about the lack of awareness and knowledge around women's health for years, saying it is a result of historical gender inequality in the research process. Research published in April this year found that the percentage of research abstracts mentioning sex, gender and LGBTQ2S+ populations doubled or quadrupled from 2020 to 2023 but remained at under 10 per cent of overall funded research. The number of female-specific research didn't change much between 2020 to 2023 — female-specific research only made up about seven per cent of all research between 2020 to 2023. A large bulk of that research focused on cancers (breast and gynecologic) or pregnancy. This is despite the Health Portfolio Sex- and Gender-Based Analysis Plus Policy, which mandates for integrated sex and gender-based analyses in Canada. That policy came into effect in 2009 and aimed to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in health research. 'Mandates are not affecting the percentage of funding for women's health grants. More efforts and support beyond sex and gender mandates are needed to increase funding for and to diversify female-specific research beyond pregnancy and cancer. Research devoted to women's health factors is key to achieving personalized medicine and improved health outcomes for everyone,' the researchers wrote. The lack of funded research into women's health also means many Canadians are misinformed and susceptible to disinformation. A 2024 Abacus report commissioned by the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) showed that a majority of Canadians now seek news and information online over TV or radio. Female respondents were more likely than men to use social media and online platforms to find information on specific health conditions, symptoms or treatment options. 'Given the complexity of women's health issues, which can range from endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), menopause and more, the quest for information is real. Women are more likely to experience dismissal or minimization of their symptoms, perpetuating stigma and shame,' the CMA said in a post published in March 2024. 'Algorithms that favour clicks and likes to the detriment of evidence-based facts make it increasingly difficult to discern health facts from fiction.' A 2021 survey from three women's health foundations in Canada — the BC Women's Health Foundation, the Alberta Women's Health Foundation and the Women's College Hospital Foundation — found that a majority of Canadians were misinformed about women's health. The survey suggests that 83 per cent of Canadians didn't know that 30 per cent of women suffer from periods severe enough to interfere with daily activities. The report also said only 20 per cent of Canadians knew that heart disease kills more women than men each year. 'For so long, women's specific health needs have been largely ignored, under-researched, and underfunded. In fact, it takes 17 years for clinical research to filter down to medical practice, but women have only been included in trials for the past 20 years,' said Jennifer Bernard in 2021. Bernard is currently the president and CEO of the SickKids Foundation but was the former president and CEO of the Women's College Hospital Foundation from 2018 to 2023.
