Alkmaar, the Cheese Town Where Spurs Couldn't Cut It.
The Qooligan doesn't normally follow the UEFA Europa League, but today the soccer gods delivered unto me a result so incredibly pungent that I had no choice but to put down some words.
Today was the first leg of the Europa League's Round of 16 stage. Eight of these teams were well-rested, having earned a bye from the qualification round by finishing in the top spots. The others had to fight and scrum in a two-game knockout stage. Tottenham, to my surprise, were the former. Alkmaar (who finished in 19th place) had to take on Turkey's Galatasaray, whom they beat 6 – 3 on aggregate.
The 900ish Spurs fans who crossed the channel had some high expectations, and rightly so. A number of players were returning from injury (Dominic Solanke, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven). Manager Ange Postecoglou has a remarkable track record winning trophies in his second year. And with a squad valuation nearly 11x greater than the opposition, Spurs (despite their woeful EPL campaign so far) should be showing a group of jumped up cheesemongers who's got the cheddar.
Tottenham's baby-faced Lucas Bergvall did his best to amputate fellow Swede Mayckel Lahdo's foot at the ankle in the 7th minute, forcing the hosts into an early substitution and removing an attacking threat. So it was perfect kismet that ten minutes later Bergvall whiffed a clearance off his shin and into his own net. Adding to the irony… the Alkmaar player who made the cross was Spurs academy graduate Tony Parrott. You can't make this up.
Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario gave Bergvall a reassuring head pat, then tried to get the sliver of supporters fired up. But they were having none of it. His remonstration was met with stony silence. To be fair, if it was not for Vicario, Spurs would've returned to London down three, maybe, four goals. He made some big-time stops.
Tottenham's starting XI looked like they'd spent too much time wolfing down samples off the cheese market tour that makes Alkmaar a hot tourist destination. Indeed, the look on Ange's face throughout much of the match was that of a lactose-intolerant diner after consuming a pot of fondue.
I won't really delve too much into this match, except to say that Tottenham were wretched. Mathys Tel didn't survive past the first 45. They mustered only a single shot on target off six efforts, despite having 60% possession. No substitute Ange put in (Wilson Odobert, Dominic Solanke, Pedro Porro, Pape Sarr) made a difference.
Oh, and Tottenham lost 1 – 0.
I have to get this out of my system…
AZ Alkmaar should consider rebranding as the Alkmaar Hotcurds.
AZ Alkmaar have to be feeling confident facing Spurs next week a-whey.
You could say this was a gouda result for Alkmaar.

Tottenham contact Brentford as they look to appoint Thomas Frank as new manager
Tottenham contact Brentford as they look to appoint Thomas Frank as new manager Tottenham Hotspur are close to appointing Brentford's Thomas Frank as their new head coach. According to The Athletic, the Lilywhites have made contact with Brentford for the 51-year-old, and hope to reach an agreement in the next 48 hours. Advertisement Frank is reportedly ready to succeed Ange Postecoglou, who was dismissed from his position on Friday after remaining two seasons in charge. The two clubs are said to have a healthy relationship and talks will centre on the cost of releasing the Danish boss as well as the backroom staff, which is expected to be around £10 million. Tottenham endured a disappointing 2024-25 Premier League campaign under Postecoglou, losing 22 of their 38 matches to finish 17th in the table. But the Australian boss secured them Champions League football for next season by leading them to Europa League success, beating Manchester United in the final in Bilbao. Advertisement That suggested that Postecoglou would continue as Spurs' manager, but the club chairman Daniel Levy made the brutal decision to sack him, which reportedly angered many of their players. Now Tottenham appear to be on the verge of signing Frank, who has done an excellent job at Brentford since becoming their head coach in 2018. He led the Bees to Premier League promotion in 2021 after beating Swansea City in the Championship play-off final. The West Londoners have since become an established side in the English top-flight under Frank, securing 13th, ninth, 16th and 10th-placed finishes. He has certainly overperformed at Brentford but doesn't have the experience of managing a top club like Tottenham, who will be playing in Champions League next season. Stats from Transfermarkt

Man United given transfer green light to sign dream Matheus Cunha teammate
Youri Tielemans has refused to rule out a transfer this summer after being linked with Manchester United for years. Tielemans, 28, joined Aston Villa from Leicester City on a free transfer a month before United paid Chelsea an initial fee of £55million for Mason Mount in the summer of 2023. The former Anderlecht midfielder is halfway through the four-year contract he signed that offseason. Advertisement After an inconsistent first season at the club, Tielemans was almost ever-present last term, with the club's players and supporters voting him their Player of the Season. He has now acknowledged how well he performed during a press conference before Belgium played Wales in a 2026 World Cup qualifier - while refusing to rule out a move away from his current club. READ MORE: Mbeumo signs, £60m striker, five sold - Manchester United's dream attack after transfer overhaul READ MORE: Viktor Gyokeres to Man United transfer twist as Victor Osimhen responds to deal "I was constantly at a very high level and was very involved in Villa's game," Tielemans said. "I have made progress in all areas. Advertisement "Does that make me think about a transfer? Nothing is ruled out, but I am not really thinking about that. "I am doing well at Villa. I feel a lot of confidence from the club and the coach." The comments open the door to a potential move to United, should the club decide to test the waters with an offer for him. Tielemans' individual performances were not enough to secure Champions League qualification for next season, as Villa losing at Old Trafford on the final day means they will instead play in the Europa League. In an Instagram post after that match, Tielemans acknowledged it was "frustrating to end the season this way." A new midfielder is among United's priority targets, with Christian Eriksen set to depart the club when his contract expires at the end of this month. There is also still uncertainty over the future of Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo due to their respective current contract situations. Advertisement Tielemans, though, could complement the already-signed Matheus Cunha and the prospective arrival of Bryan Mbeumo. There is the potential for Bruno Fernandes to form a partnership with the Belgian in central midfield. The Belgian maestro's creativity could provide an extra edge for United in attack, and help unleash Cunha's full potential at his new club. Arsenal join Alejandro Garnacho race with Man United wonderkid keen to remain in England
Manchester United are focussing on player sales before turning their attention towards signing a striker, and plenty of big-name stars like Alejandro Garnacho are expected to make way. The Argentine was a regular under Ruben Amorim last season, playing 40 times under the new head coach, but the pair have not always seen eye-to-eye. Advertisement Their first altercation came before the Manchester derby last year, and the second came when the Argentina international reacted badly after his early substitution against Ipswich Town, which again led to tensions. But his comments after the Europa League final snub proved to be the final straw after which the Portuguese tactician asked him to find a new club in the summer. Alejandro Garnacho on his way out Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano recently even confirmed that the 20-year-old would indeed be leaving Old Trafford in the summer with three Premier League clubs monitoring proceedings with interest. Advertisement We already know Chelsea are long-term admirers, while Aston Villa have also been recently linked with a move for the Carrington graduate. Respected Argentine journalist Gaston Edul has now revealed the identity of the third club in question — Arsenal. There is interest from Napoli, who came close to securing his signature in January, while multiple Saudi Pro League sides including Al-Nassr are also keen. Arsenal join the race Atletico Madrid, and Bayer Leverkusen, who recently appointed Erik ten Hag as boss, are also eager to get a deal for Alejandro Garnacho over the line but as per Edul, the United No.17 wants to stay in the Premier League. Advertisement 'Two of the three clubs that enquired about Garnacho are Chelsea and Arsenal. Garnacho has a preference to stay in the Premier League.' INEOS were initially demanding at least £50 million for the ex-Atletico Madrid academy ace, and whether they up his asking price to avoid the prospect of selling to a direct rival remains to be seen. United fans will be bitterly disappointed to see one of their own leave for a fierce rival but it is clear that the wonderkid has no future under Amorim.
