Mumbai: The 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has reaffirmed the tournament's status as one of the most-watched leagues in the world, despite a loss in momentum caused by a week-long suspension that temporarily disrupted the flow of the event, according to industry experts. The event concluded on June 3 with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) clinching their maiden title.IPL 18 was a landmark season, with the final match between RCB and Punjab Kings (PBKS) drawing 600 million peak views on digital. JioHotstar, the official streaming partner of the IPL, has been displaying cumulative views for a live match instead of peak concurrent viewers, which was the norm earlier. It must be noted that unlike peak concurrent users-which indicate the number of unique viewers watching a match at a specific moment-cumulative views reflect duplicated reach, as they count multiple sessions by the same user.Excluding the final match, the tournament attracted an audience of 450 million each on both TV and digital platforms, according to the official broadcaster JioStar-formed after the merger of Star India and Viacom18. The broadcaster was eyeing a cumulative reach of one billion viewers across TV and digital from the full tournament. For the first time, the season marked a key shift both as TV and digital rights were consolidated under one broadcaster after two years of rivalry between Star and Viacom18.In a recent interaction with ET, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal said the tournament's viewership was on course to achieve record numbers despite the blip after the week-long suspension. He also noted that the broadcaster was on course to reach 500 million broadcast audiences. "We are attracting new audiences through regional commentary. There has been a growth in female and kids' viewership for the IPL. We are also finding traction in overseas markets," Dhumal said.Experts believe that RCB's victory marks a refreshing shift in the league's competitive landscape, breaking the long-standing dominance of Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders, who have collectively won 13 of the previous 18 editions."A notable development this IPL season was the qualification of two long-standing teams, RCB and PBKS, for the final - with RCB securing their first-ever title. However, the momentum of the tournament was somewhat affected by the week-long suspension due to geopolitical tensions, which led to a dip in viewership and a noticeable decline in advertiser presence during the final stages," said Ajimon Francis, MD, Brand Finance India. The BCCI suspended the tournament on May 9 for a week due to the India-Pakistan military conflict. The remainder of the tournament, comprising 17 matches, resumed on May 17 and concluded with the final on June 3.Nearly a billion dollars in ad revenue was generated across TV, digital, on-ground, and franchise sponsorships, underscoring its vast business impact.Santosh N, managing partner at D and P Advisory, said that despite the temporary suspension, the IPL remains India's leading media property, with robust viewership across both television and digital platforms.Francis added that this season contributed to the strengthening of several team brands, driven by improved on-field performance and team cohesion."RCB is likely to see a moderate increase in brand value, supported by prize money and consistent presence among the top franchises. Punjab Kings, having historically remained lower on the brand value charts, may experience a significant uplift following their strong performance. In contrast, established teams like CSK and KKR could see a slight decline in brand value due to early exits and underwhelming campaigns," he noted.Santosh also highlighted the rise of uncapped Indian players like Sai Sudharsan and Vaibhav Suryavanshi, which helped reduce franchise dependence on marquee international stars."This shift bodes well for the league's future, as emerging local talent resonates more with younger audiences-an important demographic for long-term growth," he added.Another notable trend was the growing preference for Indian captains, even those not currently part of the national team. "Franchises are recognising that local leaders often connect better with regional fans and sponsors than high-profile overseas players," Santosh said.

Activist lodges police complaint against Virat Kohli over stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium
BENGALURU: A complaint has been filed against cricketer Virat Kohli at the Cubbon Park Police Station in connection with the June 4 stampede near Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed 11 lives and left dozens injured. The complainant, social activist HM Venkatesh, accused Kohli of promoting what he described as "gambling through IPL," alleging it incited the massive crowd that led to the tragedy. Police said the complaint will be considered under the already registered case and examined as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident. In his complaint, social activist HM Venkatesh alleged that the Indian Premier League (IPL) is "not a sport but a gambling that has contaminated the game of cricket." "Virat Kohli of the Bangalore RCB team is the most prominent among those who participated in such gambling and incited people to gather in a specific place and caused this tragedy. Therefore, we request you to please make Virat Kohli and his team members accused in the FIR of this tragedy and take action," Venkatesh stated in his complaint. Meanwhile, a Bengaluru Sessions Court on Friday remanded four individuals, including senior Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) official Nikhil Sosale and three event managers, to 14 days of judicial custody in connection with the stampede. They were arrested in a joint operation by the Cubbon Park police and the Central Crime Branch (CCB) at Kempegowda International Airport in the early hours of June 6 (Friday).

The Nifty Realty index surged nearly 5%, even dwarfing gains for financial stocks, reflecting the likely impact of the big-bang policy moves on home personal, and car loans tied to external benchmarks, such as the repo rate, will see an immediate downward reduction. However, loans tied to the marginal cost of funds-based lending rate (MCLR), like corporate exposures, will take longer to head action, Reserve Bank of India ( RBI ) Governor Sanjay Malhotra said, is geared toward boosting broader credit demand for which monetary support is a "necessary condition", although not sufficient."We see this as an opportunity to step up credit deployment, especially towards productive sectors and retail demand, while continuing to support MSMEs, retail, agri, and other priority segments," said Ashok Chandra, MD & CEO of Punjab National Bank On Friday, the RBI reduced the benchmark repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.5%, taking the total cut to 100 bps in the current rate easing cycle that began in February. We expect this move to translate into increased enquiries and faster decision-making in the coming months," said Deepak Goradia, chairman of Dosti borrowing costs could also unlock fence-sitter demand in tier II and III cities, where salaried buyers are highly rate-sensitive.

Letters to The Editor — June 7, 2025
Celebration to tragedy I would like to share my grief with the family members of the persons who died and also the injured during the celebrations of RCB's win in the Indian Premier League 2025. It is distressing to write such a letter. The roadshow was unwarranted. Basic crowd control measures were lacking. There was hardly a stretcher or an ambulance in sight and the number of policemen was insufficient. The fact that lakhs of people had converged around the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, unmindful of the risks involved, also highlights the degree of unemployment in the country. There was no need for such a hype over the victory of the RCB. It only shows how a great sport has lapsed into a commercial enterprise, so much so that whenever a boundary is hit or a wicket is taken, there are cheerleaders dancing. To add to it, players who receive a handsome amount also easily give in to advertisements. It is time regulatory measures are brought in, either by the BCCI or the government, to retain the quality of the sport. It would also not be an exaggeration to underscore the point that the Opposition political parties are trying to gain mileage out of this immense tragedy. N.G.R. Prasad, Chennai
