The Chenab Bridge, located in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district, was inaugurated on June 6 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Key dignitaries, including Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and Ashwini Vaishnaw, were present during the ceremony. Prior to the inauguration, the Prime Minister also inspected the massive railway arch bridge.
The Chenab Bridge is a crucial part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) project, designed to connect the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India through an all-weather rail network. Located in the Reasi district, the bridge stands at a height of 359 metres above the riverbed and spans 1.3 kilometres.
The bridge is expected to drastically reduce travel time in the region, with trains like the Vande Bharat Express set to run along the route.
Construction began in 2017, overcoming daunting challenges posed by the region's difficult Himalayan terrain, seismic sensitivity, and harsh weather. Built with over 30,000 tonnes of steel, the bridge is engineered to withstand high winds of up to 260 kmph and even explosions.
A key contributor to the project's success is Professor G Madhavi Latha. She is a professor at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, and worked as a geotechnical consultant on the project for 17 years.
She collaborated closely with Afcons, the bridge's contractor, helping with planning, design, and construction, especially in overcoming the challenges posed by the difficult terrain.

Train to Srinagar, carrying hope
The launch of Vande Bharat Express between Katra and Srinagar is an event that has the potential to alter the socio-economic dynamic of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). Coming in the wake of the gruesome terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam, the launch of train services connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India is a milestone rich in symbolism. An engineering marvel built over a high-altitude terrain with deep river valleys and gorges, the railway line offers a convenient and cost-effective avenue for trade and transit, and serves as a bridge between regions and people. First, it eases travel time between the Jammu region and Kashmir Valley. The Vande Bharat speeds between Srinagar and Katra in just about three hours whereas a road journey in good weather takes at least six hours. In the harsh winter, when Pir Panjal, the mountain that divides the Jammu and Kashmir regions, receives heavy snowfall, road travel is stalled or delayed by many more hours. This puts pressure on air travel, causing spikes in fares. Vande Bharat trains, designed to beat extreme weather conditions and with two daily services one way, will make travel affordable, convenient, and comfortable, including during winter. Second, a cheaper travel option should boost tourism, a key contributor to J&K's economy. Inclement weather can disrupt air travel, and the resulting high fares can cripple tourism. In the case of railways, the journey enriches the tourism experience; it may boost winter tourism and even put towns along the train route on the tourism map. Third, horticulture contributes close to 10% of J&K's gross domestic product, with potential for more. Freight trains will help in the time-bound transport of perishables and greatly reduce the travel time for produce such as apples, plums, and cherries. The launch of the train has expanded market access has expanded for J&K's horticulture sector, which employs thousands of people. Fourth, the historic experience with railways is that it breaks down barriers between people. It makes places easy to reach and opens up spaces for communication. People-to-people interaction helps in removing prejudices and preconceived notions. Less accessible places tend to fear the outsider and develop a siege mentality. Trains enable travel and provide people with a view that is more expansive and accommodative. Finally, the railroad to Srinagar is the last piece in integrating J&K with the rest of India. Just as the abrogation of Article 370 set new terms of political integration, the railway link marks a milestone in geographical and economic integration. The Vande Bharats add a new layer of meaning to the phrase from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. The train to Srinagar symbolises a journey of joy, resilience, and hope.

India to be a global AI powerhouse: OpenAI executive after India academy launch
ChatGPT developer OpenAI and the IndiaAI Mission on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding to launch the US-based company's educational platform, OpenAI Academy , to promote artificial intelligence skills in India. This makes it the first international rollout of OpenAI's online learning platform. India has the second largest user base for ChatGPT. 'The (AI) tools and the latest development frameworks should be available to all the startups and researchers so that new apps can be developed, new solutions can be created at population scale,' union IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a virtual message at the launch in New Delhi. The initiative is expected to further strengthen India's resolve to democratise technology and contribute to the IndiaAI Mission, he said. The mission, which is also supporting the building of Indian foundational models, is receiving interest to do so from the likes of Essential AI cofounder Ashish Vaswani and Two AI founder Pranav Mistry, an official said on the sidelines of the event. 'By leading in these areas and empowering people to harness frontier intelligence, India can accelerate that growth and discover scientific breakthroughs and develop solutions to some of society's hardest challenges,' Kwon said. India's vast and growing pool of AI talent, vibrant entrepreneurial spirit and strong government support to expand critical infrastructure mean the country is poised to succeed in all areas of the AI stack, he added. 'As demand for AI professionals is expected to reach 1 million by 2026, there's a significant opportunity and a need to expand AI skills, development and make sure people from every part of India can participate and benefit,' Kwon said. Through the partnership, OpenAI will contribute educational content and resources to IndiaAI's 'future skills' platform and to the iGOT Karmayogi civil servant capacity building platform. It will also provide up to $100,000 worth of API credits to 50 IndiaAI Mission-approved fellows and startups. 'I am sure with this partnership, we will be able to strengthen our educational ecosystem, we will be able to empower all our students, we will be able to support our entrepreneurs and our engineers in building state-of-the-art AI applications and models,' IndiaAI Mission chief executive Abhishek Singh said. OpenAI will help train a million teachers in the use of generative AI . It will also conduct hackathons in seven states to reach 25,000 students and webinars and workshops delivered by its domain experts and partners in six cities, the company said.
