
United Airlines flights grounded nationwide because of technology problem
An alert on the Federal Aviation Administration website said all United flights destined for Chicago were halted at their departing airports. The agency said Denver, Newark, Houston and San Francisco airports were also impacted by halted flights.
'Safety is our top priority, and we'll work with our customers to get them to their destinations,' an emailed statement from the Chicago based-airline said without disclosing the specifics of the problem.
An AP journalist had boarded a United plane at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport for a trip to Houston when flight attendants announced a 'systemwide' problem had grounded flights. They then sent passengers back to the terminal.
Another traveler, Johan Kotze, was at the New Orleans airport to begin a journey to the Indian Ocean island nation of Mauritius for vacation. Getting caught up in flight delays for him likely meant he would miss connecting flights along the way and would have to rebook not only the flights but a car and accommodations as well.
'It's not very nice," he said of the experience.
United Airlines apologized on social media to upset customers who were facing delays and hours sitting in planes on runways.
'Hey there, we apologize for the travel disruption today,' the airline told a customer on the social platform X. 'Our teams are working to resolve the outage as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience.'

United Airlines announces nationwide ground stop
The Federal Aviation Administration has announced a ground stop for United Airlines flights in Chicago's O'Hare and several other major hubs around the United States. Airports in Denver, Newark, Houston, and San Francisco are also impacted by the ground stops, according to an FAA alert. 'Due to a technology issue, we are holding United mainline flights at their departure airports. We expect additional flight delays this evening as we work through this issue. Safety is our top priority, and we'll work with our customers to get them to their destinations,' United said in a statement. In the hours since the ground stops were first ordered, many aboard the stuck aircrafts have taken to social media in frustration. Robert Malone, a biochemist who was thrust onto the public stage during the COVID-19 pandemic for what some said was vaccine misinformation, happened to be one of the unlucky people stranded on an affected plane. 'I am on the tarmac for a United flight that has been grounded. The flight attendant says she is hearing that the whole United system for all planes in the USA is down right now. Let's hope it's fixed quickly or it is gonna be a long night for everybody,' Malone wrote on X. A man named James Michaels wrote posted at 7:57pm ET that his plane was supposed to take off five hours ago from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. 'No other United Airlines planes are leaving the tarmac. This is crazy,' he said. Another person posted that his first experience with United was 'a bust.' As of that person's 7:33pm ET post, he said he was still on the tarmac at Washington Dulles International Airport. United last had to issue a nationwide ground stop for its mainline flights on July 24, when the fire alarm sounded at its Chicago operations center.

United Airlines on Wednesday said it had suspended flights due to a widespread tech issue, and anticipates additional flight delays in the evening. 'Due to a technology issue, we are holding United mainline flights at their departure airports,' United said in a statement. 'We expect additional flight delays this evening as we work through this issue. Safety is our top priority, and we'll work with our customers to get them to their destinations.' According to the Federal Aviation Administration's website, ground stops had been issued for United Airlines flights at several US airports including its hubs in Chicago, Denver, Houston, Newark and San Francisco. The ground stop does not affect United Express flights, and any flight already in the air will continue to its destination, the airline said. As of Wednesday evening, tracking site FlightAware reported that United had delayed 28%, or 876, of that day's flights. As frustrated passengers took to social media, United apologized for the disruption and assured people their teams were 'working to resolve the widespread system error as quickly as possible'.
